From the Japanese word for "harbor wave", tsunami is a word that is now associated with a giant, destructive wave. These giant waves are caused by underwater disturbances, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. In South Asia, the word tsunami is a representation of absolute devastation.

On Sunday December 26, 2004, a tsunami hit the coastlines of Southern Asia, leaving behind devastation and tragedy among millions of people. December 31: the death toll is sitting just below 140,000 people. Unfortunately, that total is not yet finished as the number continues to rise.

All the aid and reparation of the cities affected, as well as the individuals that were involved will have a high price. As each day goes on, that price becomes more and more out of reach to the people that need it.

Some of our membership have expressed a desire to help out so starting today and running until February 28th, 2005 we will be collecting funds to contribute to the disaster relief organizations to help with the re-building process.

A list of donors will be maintained and listed in the newsletter. Individual donation amounts will not be disclosed but an update total of all donations combined will be announced weekly in the newsletter as well. Every little bit will make a huge difference to the victims of this disaster!

The Circle's motto, which depicts my goals for the Worldwide Circle of Friends is :

“A ball is a circle. No beginning, no end.
It keeps us together, like our Circle of Friends;
but, the treasure inside, for you to see
is the treasure of friendship you've granted to me.

Today I pass the friendship ball to you. Pass it on to someone who is a friend to you.”
