days until Reunion 2008 in INTRIGUING SOUTH AMERICA ! BigSisPat's Journal Just thought you'd like to know what an average day for me is like, as manager here at Twin Gables. I'm up everyday at 5:00 a.m., usually spend a couple of hours on the computer, checking emails, and working on the newsletter. You see as soon as it is published on Friday, I begin preparing the next week's newsletter. By 7:00 a.m. I am dressed, and then walk over to unlock our onsite Laundromat. Then come back to have my breakfast. At 11:30 a.m.Max and I, are joined by Bob, one of my tenants for a the short 10 minute walk to the post office to pick up the mail, then come back and deliver it to the tenants. This week, I had to deal with yet another tirade from a tenant to whom I had to serve an eviction notice. I don't like to speak ill of people, but I do believe this woman is mentally unbalanced. Yesterday, she went so far as to call my boss in Calgary. Bless this man, he was firm with her, backed up my decision, and told her she had to be out by October 4th. Another tenant complained about a terrible odor in his kitchen, and after investigating discovered a ton of rodent droppings. I had to clean it all up then set a trap. Hopefully we will catch this critter, and then the handyman will have to go in and plug up the hole. Another tenant, a dear sweet man approached me the other day, saying one of his burners was hot! So we walked over, to check it out, where I discovered the reason it was hot was because it was turned on! In the meantime I had a new tenant move in, so I had to make sure she got settled properly. However, she came the next day to ask for help with a problem. It seems she says, her suitcase somehow got locked, but she didn't have a key. I have a bunch of extra keys, so I thought I'd give it a try. But, when I got there, discovered it wasnt locked at all! The teeth of the zipper had separated from the cloth, making it impossible to unzip. So she had no alternative but to cut it open. On a more pleasant note, another tenant, whose wife is a Métis, brought over some home made soup, and Métis Bannock bread. I found this recipe online. I haven't tried it yet,(but I have tasted it, and it is scrumptious) but Georgina (the lovely Mé tis), has promised to show me how to make it when she returns in two weeks. She works in Fort McMurray, out in the bush camps. We Métis love our bannock and this is my favourite recipe for it. It's great with soup, or just on it's own with jam or honey. by SmurfyGirl 40 min | 15 min prep SERVES 4 -6 * 3 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour) * 2 tablespoons baking powder * 1 tablespoon sugar * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/2 cup margarine (or butter or shortening) * 3/4-1 cup milk (or water) 1. Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. 2. Work in the margarine using hands until you make a nice crumble. If you have Olivina margarine in your area, I find this makes for the best bannock. 3. Gradually mix in enough milk to make soft but not sticky. Knead. 4. Shape into a ball, place on a greased baking sheet, then flatten into a circle about 1 inch thick. 5. Bake at 425F (220C) for 25 minutes or until lightly browned. And yet another tenant, whose husband went fishing, brought me a plate with fresh caught Coho salmon mashed potatoes and a mixture of veggies. I also received a jar of home made apple butter from yet another tenant. Needless to say, the benefits far outweigh the problems. Finallly, at 8:00 p.m. I lock up the laundromat, turn off the phone, and the evening is mine. Oh, and I do find time to do some crafts. Here's pictures Of a couple of things I created recently: An angel, made from a doily and styrofoam ball. Meet Butternuts: Gregory, Grace, Junior, Fido and Ginger. Until Next Time, BigSisPat from Beautiul Crofton, BC, Canada PS, the September Trivia Pages are now ready for your viewing pleasure To the Top Nova Scotia: The Cradle of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy With the national election drums beating out a loud message that Canada might go to the polls again this autumn, it is a good time to reflect on what was achieved in Nova Scotia more than two centuries ago and what lessons we might take from this historical event to meet the challenges of democracy in our era. The September 2008 "D250" Encounters With Canada youth summit in Halifax is an excellent initiative to achieve this purpose. Two hundred and fifty years ago, on October 2, 1758, Nova Scotia's first legislative assembly met in Halifax and Canadian Parliamentary government was born. The twenty members of the assembly had been elected the previous July by the votes of Protestant, British males, over 21, owning freehold land, a franchise that seems remarkably restrictive to us, but was, in fact, liberal for that era. In the most celebrated trial in Nova Scotia history, newspaperman Joseph Howe defended himself in a fight for freedom of the press with a crowd pleasing speech of over six hours (Source: Library and Archives Canada/PA-025486). Democracy, as succinctly defined by the Oxford Dictionary "is a form of government in which the power resides in the people and is exercised by them either directly or by means of elected representatives". In the history of democracy, there are three major turning points of direct democracy, representative democracy and mass democracy, and in their application to Canada, Maritimers, especially Nova Scotians, have played a leading role. Direct or participatory democracy was born in Athens in 500 B.C. In that era of kings and empires, the Athenian idea that average citizens should decide policy rather than elites may be the single most revolutionary innovation in the history of government. Male citizens of Athens, about 30, 000 out of a population of about 250, 000 (slaves and women were not entitled to vote), had the right to attend ten fixed meetings a year of the assembly where they deliberated on critical issues like war and peace. Gathered on the Pynx, a hill in Athens, citizens listened, debated, and decided their fate. Ever since then, Athens has been the model for participatory or strong democracy where citizens, as individuals, play the deciding role in public affairs. Canada, too, has a tradition of participatory governance, one especially enshrined in the history of our First Nations. There are over 600 First Nations in Canada and one should not make generalizations that apply to all, but there are some well-documented case studies on the procedures and principles which illustrated aboriginal governance. The operative rules were consensus and participation. The Great Binding Law of the Iroquois Nations, for example, contains 117 clauses. Some believe the origin of the Iroquois Confederacy goes as far back as the 12th Century, although it certainly goes back at least to the 15th. Tribes would choose a Peace Chief, a War Chief, and a Council of Elders. Women did not get the vote in Canada until 1918, but the Iroquois were a matriarchal society, with women choosing the representatives who attended the Councils. Representatives of the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy even attended the congress of 1776 in Philadelphia where they exchanged ideas on governance with Benjamin Franklin. In Eastern Canada, several First Nations formed the Wabanaki Confederacy, and the Mi'kmaq had a sophisticated tri-level of leadership. The villages had local Chiefs and Councils of Elders; several villages came together in Districts, presided over by a Saqamaw; and the eight Districts formed a Grand Council which had the responsibilities of relations with the other aboriginal nations and confederacies. Long before the European settlement, aboriginal people had developed sophisticated mechanisms of government and international relations and the basic principle of this system - consensus decision -makingis of continuing relevance to the modern age. Direct democracy on the Athenian or aboriginal model had one major flaw: once you get beyond a certain size, it is not possible to put all your citizens atop a hill or around a campfire. The British solved the problem by a second great invention - a representative Parliament. Citizens would not decide issues individually, as in Athens, but they would elect representatives to do so on their behalf. The Pynx of the citizen assembly would evolve into a Parliament of representatives. In 1265, Simon de Montfort convened a Parliament which contained two knights from the shires, and two burgesses from each borough. For the first time, representatives of the people were part of an institution that advised and controlled the executive. This was the institution transplanted to Nova Scotia in 1758. And, as in Great Britain, the struggle in Nova Scotia soon became how to transform a representative legislature into a responsible government. Parliament's initial role in Great Britain was to ensure that the Monarch heard the voices of the people as he or she wielded the executive powers of government. Britain had a "mixed constitution" comprised of an elected House of Commons, a hereditary House of Lords, and a Monarch. A mixed constitution was replicated in Nova Scotia and the other colonies in British North America. The appointed Governor ruled with the assistance of an appointed Executive Committee and an appointed Legislative Council. The elected Legislative Assembly had the power to approve laws and withhold supplies, but the source of colonial power was in the governor, who was accountable to the imperial government in Great Britain. As the Legislative Assembly was being inaugurated in Nova Scotia, however, the British Parliament was evolving toward a government dependent on the votes of a majority of the members of the House of Commons (and thus, in theory, the people). George III of Great Britain is as significant for grudgingly conceding power to the parties represented in Parliament as he is for losing the American Revolution. In the 1780's the King was forced to accept a government that he detested (the Fox-North Coalition) because it commanded a majority in the House of Commons, and gradually the post of the Prime Minister began to supersede the power of the monarch. The British debate over responsible government equally played out in Canada, with Nova Scotia leading the way. Nova Scotians began to demand that the members of the Executive Council, the forerunner to the Cabinet, should be responsible to the elected legislature, not the appointed governor. In 1836, for example, Joseph Howe, the leader of the Reform Movement (the liberals of the day), made the point that "all we ask for is what exists at home (Britain)" a system of responsibility to the people”. In 1847, the Nova Scotia Reformers won an election and in January 1848, when the Conservative government was defeated following a vote of non-confidence in the Assembly, the Governor General, Lord Elgin, called on James Uniacke, a Reformer, to become the leader of the new government. "Nova Scotia", writes W.S. MacNutt, "was the first province of British North America in which responsible government was formally conceded and given effect." If direct democracy was the first turning point, and representative democracy and responsible government the second, mass democracy was the third mile stone in democracy's evolution. If the "people" were to choose their representatives, who made up the people? The initial answer in Nova Scotia in 1758 was Protestant men over 21 who owned property. But fairly quickly Nova Scotia began to expand the franchise (those entitled to vote) and soon surpassed Great Britain in defining the boundaries of citizenship. In 1789, the Nova Scotia Assembly removed religious restrictions affecting the right to vote (Roman Catholics in Great Britain had to wait until 1829 to enjoy the franchise). In 1854 Nova Scotia introduced universal male suffrage, dropping property restrictions and increasing the number of electors by 50%, the first jurisdiction in North America to do so. New Brunswick also innovated, introducing the secret ballot in 1855, a reform not adopted in Canada proper until 1874. This measure was crucial for reducing election violence. With public voting gangs could intimidate and wreck their vengeance on opponents. Robert Baldwin, the great Upper Canadian Reformer, once had to flee on horseback a howling election mob. Before Confederation, there were 20 deaths due to election violence, but the secret ballot and simultaneous voting (as opposed to staggered dates) ended the reign of electoral terror. Women, however, had to wait until 1918 before they were considered as citizens entitled to vote federally; in this same year, Nova Scotia gave women the vote provincially. In Lower Canada in 1791, under the jurisdiction of the Civil Code rather than the Common Law, women who owned property could vote on the same basis as men, i.e. British conventions did not apply. For a time, Quebec was a leader in gender equity; but upon uniting with Canada in 1841 in the Act of Union, Quebec women lost this right and Quebec eventually became the last Canadian province to give women the vote in 1940. (Manitoba was the first in 1916.) Canadians learned from New Zealand, which led the world by giving women the vote in 1893. Each of the three turning points of direct democracy, representative democracy and mass democracy continue to be issues for us today. Many citizens yearn to have a direct impact on policy rather than pleading with a bureaucrat or visiting the constituency office of a Member of Parliament. Some suggest that internet voting might be a technique that could replicate in Canada the direct democracy of the Pnyx in Athens. But how many citizens would engage in the process as opposed to special interest groups? The Aboriginal tradition of consensus equally depends on extensive discussion and mutual learning – how many citizens have the time to engage so intensively? Randomly selected citizen panels might be one answer. They have been already used to advise governments on electoral systems and in the United Kingdom they have been employed on broader issues such as city planning. But this democratic innovation depends on volunteers willing to spend their weekends discussing policy. The representative institution of parliament also is badly in need of reform. Partisan-wrangling has reduced question period to a reality show circus, and many MP's feel that they have little influence on the executive. The origins of Parliament in 1265 were intended to provide some restraint on the power of the executive; how to re-balance power between the Prime Minister and Parliament today is as necessary as it was once to balance the power of the king. In Lunenburg township, in Nova Scotia's first election in July 1758, 58 of 70 potential voters (or 82%) voted for 2 members from a list of 7 candidates. The percentage voting in Canada’s last national election in 2006 was only 65% of registered voters. Canada's mass democracy is loosing its "mass". According to Elections Canada, in the 2006 election the lowest turnout, at 44%, was from young voters 18-24, compared to 77% of voters 65-74. We know that turnout is related to personal efficacy - the amount of confidence individuals have in their knowledge of a subject. The calamitous decline of Canadian history in our school system may be a contributing factor in the low percentage of young people voting. If one does not know about the origins of Parliament, why vote for a Member of Parliament? Democracy is always a work in progress. Issues change, and intuitions evolve. Canadian democracy is certainly in need of major repair as we face the next national general election: voting turnout is mediocre, parliamentary accountability is in decline, and citizens are frustrated in their ability to contribute to decisions that influence their lives. We must retain the optimism of Joseph Howe, the greatest of Nova Scotia reformers; he told the electors of Nova Scotia in 1851 that even after the great achievement of responsible government, the reform agenda was not done. He wrote "a noble heart is beating beneath the giant ribs of North America. See that you do not, by apathy or indifference, depress its healthy pulsations." Amen to that! Thomas S. Origin The word chip has several meanings; the one that we are concerned with here is the earliest known of these, namely 'a small piece of wood, as might be chopped, or chipped, from a larger block'. The phrase 'a chip on one's shoulder' is reported as originating with the nineteenth century U.S. practice of spoiling for a fight by carrying a chip of wood on one's shoulder, daring others to knock it off. This suggested derivation has more than the whiff of folk-etymology about it. Anyone who might be inclined to doubt that origin can take heart from an alternative theory. This relates to working practices in the British Royal Dockyards in the 18th century. In Day and Lunn's The History of Work and Labour Relations in the Royal Dockyards, 1999, the authors report that the standing orders of the [Royal] Navy Board for August 1739 included this ruling: "Shipwrights to be allowed to bring [chips] on their shoulders near to the dock gates, there to be inspected by officers". The permission to remove surplus timber for firewood or building material was a substantial perk of the job for the dock workers. A subsequent standing order, in May 1753, ruled that only chips that could be carried under one arm were allowed to be removed. This limited the amount of timber that could be taken and the shipwrights were not best pleased about the revoking of their previous benefit. Three years later, for this and other reasons, they went on strike. Hattendorf, Knight et al., in British Naval Documents, 1204 - 1960, record a letter which was sent by Chatham Dockyard officers to the Navy Board, relating to the 1756 dockyard workers' strike at Chatham. The letter records a comment made by a shipwright who was stopped at the yard's gates: "Are not the chips mine? I will not lower them." It goes on to report that "Immediately the main body pushed on with their chips on their shoulders." That's a nice story and does connect an incident concerning chips and shoulders with a belligerent attitude. We need to be a little wary of swallowing that derivation whole however. The problem with it is that the phrase isn't known to be recorded in print in England with its figurative meaning anywhere near the 18th century. The first such record by an English author doesn't seem to be until the 1930s in fact, in Somerset Maugham's Gentleman in the Parlour: "He was a man with a chip on his shoulder. Everyone seemed in a conspiracy to slight or injure him." A gap of nearly 200 years between the use of a phrase and the incident that supposedly spawned it in the same country is hard to explain. In my humble opinion, the 'chips on shoulders' report dating from 1756 refer literally to just that, chips carried on shoulders. There's no evidence at all to suggest 'a chip on one's shoulder' existed as a figurative phrase until the 19th century. The confrontational challenge to knock a chip of wood off someone's shoulder does after all appear to be the correct derivation. Circumstantial evidence is all we have to go on here, but that clearly points to a 19th century US coinage. The earliest printed citations that I can find that refer to chips on shoulders are all from America, which the OED states quite firmly to be the source of the phrase. For example: The American writer and historian James Kirke Paulding's Letters from the South, 1817: "A man rode furiously by on horseback, and swore he'd be d----d if he could not lick any man who dared to crook his elbow at him. This, it seems, is equivalent to throwing the glove in days of yore, or to the boyish custom of knocking a chip off the shoulder." In 1830 the New York newspaper The Long Island Telegraph printed this: "When two churlish boys were determined to fight, a chip would be placed on the shoulder of one, and the other demanded to knock it off at his peril." The actual phrase 'chip on his shoulder' appears a little later, in the Weekly Oregonian 1855: "Leland, in his last issue, struts out with a chip on his shoulder, and dares Bush to knock it off." He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!" "You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood." Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. "Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life." I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. I saw him about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live." "Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. He continued, "...the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action." "What did you do?" I asked. "Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'" Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead." He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34. Standing near the security gate, they hugged, and the mother said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.' The daughter replied, 'Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.' They kissed, and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy, but she welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?' Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?' 'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead, and the reality is - her next trip back will be for my funeral,' she said. 'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?' She began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.' She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and she smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.' Then, turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory. I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting. I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. Then, she began to cry, and walked away. Billie from To the Top Argentina Report We have just had two consecutive weekends of partying here in Mar del Plata. On 31st August we had a fund raising BBQ with our dance group, as next year they hope to adopt a rural mountain school in Salta province. There were well over 200 people present at that, and the lunchtime party went on well into the evening Then on the 7th Sept, the Saltenian Residents Club held their 40th anniversary party for about 130 people, 10 of whom were specially invited due to their history connected with the club. Member Charitos husband is the presi, and my husband is the vice. We worked the Saturday preparing the hall, and the Sunday preparing the food, running around picking up the cake, the wine, the drinks, 50 extra chairs, and finishing the hall and serving the people. Again the event went on well into the evening, with singing, dancing, speeches and raffles. So this weekend I am looking forward to a quiet family get-together! Do please take a moment to visit it, and maybe it will remind you that YOUR area has something interesting to offer the rest of the world. We have started a NEW SECTION in the Planet Awareness site, all about Regional, State, Provincial or National Parks. So a challenge is set to tell us about the one/those in visiting distance from you. [Editors Note: A request from Daphne- We often get a mention of National or State Parks, for example, connected with photos received. Can you please ask members to send me information on such parks they have near them or have visited. As well as appearing in the Global, I'd like to expand a new section in the Planet Awareness site on parks.] A new Nature Photo contest has started and as fitting with our Planet awareness site, it is of course nature based, and the theme this time is Nature's SKY. You have plenty of time to watch out for those sunsets, cloud formations, rainbows, storms, night skies etc etc Photos sent in just have to be members' own or members 'family and friends. Look forward to seeing what you all come up with. Here are the pictures we have received so far. The Circle's Computer help site has had some new articles added recently sent in by Pat. And there are tips and hints on just about everything from Alcohols in cooking to "Why didn"t I think of that" type tips: Cookery Tips Again if you have anything you would like added, or if you want info on anything that isn"t there, just let us know. Baking Terms 101 Beat To combine ingredients vigorously with a spoon, fork, wire whisk, hand beater or electric mixer until the ingredients are smooth and uniform. Blend To combine ingredients with a spoon, wire whisk, or rubber scraper until very smooth and uniform. A blender or food processor may also be used, depending on the job. Boil To heat a liquid until bubbles rise continuously and break on the surface and steam is given off. For a rolling boil, the bubbles form rapidly and will not stop forming even when the liquid is stirred. Fold To combine ingredients lightly while preventing loss of air by using two motions: Using a rubber spatula, first cut down vertically through the mixture. Next, slide the spatula across the bottom of the bowl and up the side, turning the mixture over. Repeat these motions after rotating the bowl one-fourth turn with each series of strokes. Grease To rub the inside surface of a pan with solid shortening, using a pastry brush, wax paper or paper towels, to prevent food from sticking during baking. Nonstick cooking spray may also be used; do not use butter or margarine (especially in a baked recipe) because sticking may occur. Grease and Flour To rub the inside surface of a pan with solid shortening before dusting it with flour, to prevent food from sticking during baking. After flouring the pan, turn it upside down, tapping the bottom to remove excess flour. If the batter to be added to the pan is chocolate, HERSHEY'S Cocoa may be used in place of flour to add a rich brown coating to the final product. Heat Oven To turn the oven controls to the desired temperature, allowing the oven to heat thoroughly before adding food. Heating takes about 10 minutes. Mix To combine ingredients in any way that distributes them evenly. This can be accomplished using a hand utensil or an electric mixer. Soften To allow cold food, such as butter, margarine or cream cheese, to stand at room temperature until no longer hard. Generally this will take 30 to 60 minutes. Stir To combine ingredients with a circular or "figure 8" motion until they are of a uniform consistency. Whip To beat ingredients with a wire whisk, hand rotary beater or electric mixer to add air and increase volume until ingredients are light and fluffy, such as with whipping cream or egg whites. Daphne Would love to hear from you all. Daphne Click Here: The Farmer and the Lord Charla This is absolutely amazing - and makes perfect sense!! A friend sent this to me. It's been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish... all before making a human. He made and provided what we'd need before we were born. These are best & more powerful when eaten raw. We're such slow learners... God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body! God's Pharmacy! Amazing! A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes. A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food. Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food. A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function. Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys. Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body. Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them). Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility. Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics. Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts. Onions look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body. Please don't break this even if you only send it to one person. Our Furry Friends/ Family Members Now and Always Chicken Soup for the Soul: Loving Our Dogs from Norma from Alberta, Canada Suzy Huether A few years ago when I was looking for a small dog to add to our family, I contacted the local SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and got the name of a woman who was fostering some rescued Maltese dogs for them. I called the woman, and my husband and I drove to her home. As I looked around, I noticed a cute Maltese named Casper. My husband and I decided we would like to adopt him. The foster mom asked us if there were any way we would open our hearts to Casper's companion, Kato, as well. She told us that the two boys, who had only each other for comfort, had recently been rescued from a puppy mill, where they had spent the first seven years of their lives. When the local SPCA shut down the puppy mill and seized all the dogs, Kato and Casper had been put in her foster home. She told us that when she first picked them up, their fur was in such terrible shape they hardly looked like Maltese dogs. They were brown, the fur on their legs was matted to their stomachs, and their paws were swollen and tender from living on the wire mesh of their cage. For seven years, the only human contact these boys had was when they were thrown their food or tossed into another cage to breed with a female. What people don't realize, she said, is that the cute little puppies in the windows of many pet stores leave parents behind who live lives of neglect and suffering. Hearing all this, I turned and looked down at the little Maltese named Kato. But he's so ugly, I thought. And he isn't even friendly. He growled and grumbled when we looked at him. Still, I felt a tug at my heart and agreed to take Kato also. As we drove home, my husband and I worried that maybe we'd taken on too much. We'd never had dogs that had been so abused for such a long time. The first day at our home was very difficult for the two dogs. They didn't understand anything but fear of humans. They stayed close to each other and mostly hid under tables or in dark corners. In an effort to give them a fresh start, we changed their names: Casper became Thomas and Kato became Timothy. The days turned into weeks and weeks into months. Over time Thomas became friendlier and would wag his tail when we talked to him, but Timothy still couldn't make eye contact with us. At the sound of our voices, he'd push himself against the back wall of his crate. His plastic dog kennel - the kind used to transport dogs - was the place he felt safest. Even with the crate door left open, he preferred to spend most of the day in his crate, only emerging when we gently pulled him out to take him outside. Each time I reached for Timothy, he'd flip upside down, whimpering. One day I noticed he had a gray haze over his eyes, as though there was a film on them. I asked the vet about it and he told me that it happens to dogs that live in complete fear. They retreat to another place to help themselves live through each day. I did everything I could think of to help this dog, but he made little progress. He would sit at the back of his crate with his head hanging down hour after hour. Nevertheless, I kept trying. When the whole house was quiet, I sat on the floor and talked to him, but he wouldn't look at me. He just stared off in another direction. One day as I sat and watched this poor soul suffering in silence, I thought about his past - the hunger, the isolation, the abuse - and started to sob. My heart aching, I began telling him how sorry I was for the pain humans had caused him. My thoughts were filled with the unhappiness and fear he had endured year after year. As the tears streamed down my face, I felt a soft touch on my hand. Through my tears, I saw Timothy. He had come out from the back of his crate to sit near me, licking the tears that fell on my hand. Quietly, so I wouldn't scare him, I told him that I loved him. I promised that I would always love him and that no one would ever hurt him again. As I whispered over and over that he would always be warm, safe and fed, he came a step closer to me. A passage from the Bible came to my mind: Love is kind; it keeps no record of wrongs; it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. The meaning of these words was so clear as I looked at this little dog who, in spite of everything he had experienced, had opened his heart to me. Today, I am still the only person Timothy trusts completely; we share a very special bond. When I call his name, he spins in delight and barks, his tail wagging in a frenzy of happiness. When I sit down, he climbs into my arms and licks my face. And just as I promised, I hold him, gently snuggle him and tell him I love him now and always. If you want...This is to cute If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him and never say its not quite as good as his mothers then adopt a dog. If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour, for as long and wherever you want ... then adopt a dog. If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn't care about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies then adopt a dog. If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores then adopt a dog ! If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn't care if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually .. then adopt a dog. BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness . then adopt a cat! Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say... marry a man, didn't you? Send this to all the women you know to brighten their day. Send this to all the men just to annoy them!

And yet another tenant, whose husband went fishing, brought me a plate with fresh caught Coho salmon mashed potatoes and a mixture of veggies
. I also received a jar of home made apple butter from yet another tenant.
Needless to say, the benefits far outweigh the problems.
Finallly, at 8:00 p.m. I lock up the laundromat, turn off the phone, and the evening is mine.

Nova Scotia: The Cradle of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy
With the national election drums beating out a loud message that Canada might go to the polls again this autumn, it is a good time to reflect on what was achieved in Nova Scotia more than two centuries ago and what lessons we might take from this historical event to meet the challenges of democracy in our era. The September 2008 "D250" Encounters With Canada youth summit in Halifax is an excellent initiative to achieve this purpose.
In the most celebrated trial in Nova Scotia history, newspaperman Joseph Howe defended himself in a fight for freedom of the press with a crowd pleasing speech of over six hours (Source: Library and Archives Canada/PA-025486).
MacNutt, "was the first province of British North America in which responsible government was formally conceded and given effect."
If direct democracy was the first turning point, and representative democracy and responsible government the second, mass democracy was the third mile stone in democracy's evolution.

Chip on your shoulder Meaning:A perceived grievance or sense of inferiority.
Origin
The word chip has several meanings; the one that we are concerned with here is the earliest known of these, namely 'a small piece of wood, as might be chopped, or chipped, from a larger block'.
I will not lower them."
It goes on to report that "Immediately the main body pushed on with their chips on their shoulders."
That's a nice story and does connect an incident concerning chips and shoulders with a belligerent attitude. Everyone seemed in a conspiracy to slight or injure him."
A gap of nearly 200 years between the use of a phrase and the incident that supposedly spawned it in the same country is hard to explain.
This, it seems, is equivalent to throwing the glove in days of yore, or to the boyish custom of knocking a chip off the shoulder."
In 1830 the New York newspaper The Long Island Telegraph printed this: "When two churlish boys were determined to fight, a chip would be placed on the shoulder of one, and the other demanded to knock it off at his peril."
The actual phrase 'chip on his shoulder' appears a little later, in the Weekly Oregonian 1855: "Leland, in his last issue, struts out with a chip on his shoulder, and dares Bush to knock it off."

John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!"
"You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood.
I choose to be in a good mood."
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it.
The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."
I reflected on what he said.
When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?"
I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.
He continued, "...the paramedics were great.
They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'"
Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.
After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
You have two choices now:
01. Delete this
02. Forward it to the people you care about. You know the choice I made.

Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.
Standing near the security gate, they hugged, and the mother said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.'
The daughter replied, 'Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.'
They kissed, and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy, but she welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'
Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?' 'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead, and the reality is - her next trip back will be for my funeral,' she said.
'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?'
She began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.' She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and she smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.'
Then, turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory.
They say, it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire life to forget them.

We have just had two consecutive weekends of partying here in Mar del Plata. On 31st August we had a fund raising BBQ with our dance group, as next year they hope to adopt a rural mountain school in Salta province. There were well over 200 people present at that, and the lunchtime party went on well into the evening
Then on the 7th Sept, the Saltenian Residents Club held their 40th anniversary party for about 130 people, 10 of whom were specially invited due to their history connected with the club.

Click Here: The Farmer and the Lord Charla This is absolutely amazing - and makes perfect sense!! Look at the date when this was started. Thanks NOTICE AT THE END, THE DATE THE CANDLE WAS STARTED. I am not going to be the one who Lets it die. You... ....have a GREAT Day!!!
Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries
Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.
Look at the date when this was started. Thanks
NOTICE AT THE END, THE DATE THE CANDLE WAS STARTED.
