This week, for my journal, I'd like to share something from one of the Inspirational sites I subscribe to, called "The Purpose Driven Life"

Authentic Friendships
by Rick Warren
But if we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other. Then the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:7–8 (NCV)

In Christian fellowship people should experience authenticity.

Authentic fellowship is not superficial, surface-level chit-chat. It’s genuine, heart-to-heart, sometimes gut-level, sharing.

It happens when people get honest about who they are and what is happening in their lives. They share their hurts, reveal their feelings, confess their failures, disclose their doubts, admit their fears, acknowledge their weaknesses, and ask for help and prayer.

Authenticity is the exact opposite of what you find in many churches. Instead of an atmosphere of honesty and humility, there is pretending, role-playing, politicking, superficial politeness, and shallow conversation.

People wear masks, keep their guard up, and act as if everything is rosy in their lives. These attitudes are the death of real friendship.

It’s only as we become open about our lives that we experience authentic fellowship. The Bible says, “If we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other. . . . If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves” (1 John 1:7–8 NCV).

The world thinks intimacy occurs in the dark, but God says it happens in the light. We tend to use darkness to hide our hurts, faults, fears, failures, and flaws. But in the light, we bring them all out into the open and admit who we really are.

Of course, being authentic requires both courage and humility. It means facing our fear of exposure, rejection, and being hurt again.

Why would anyone take such a risk?

Because it’s the only way to grow spiritually and be emotionally healthy. The Bible says, “Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed” (James 5:16 MSG).

Jan's Ramblings

Washing your quilt

Your quilt can be washed with much care.

Use cool water, a tiny amount of the right soap and slight agitation. Best done in a very clean bathtub using special quilt soap - or Orvis (used for horses).

Dissolve the soap completely in the water before you put the quilt in. Rinse thoroughly.

Fold carefully between towels to remove excess water. Lay flat to dry. Place towels under the wet quilt, then lift the towels to get the quilt out of the tub.

(Handling the wet quilt tends to stretch it.)

Other options:

  • Use a child's wading pool to wash the quilt.
  • Instead of washing, vacuum your quilt using low suction, if possible.
  • Use a lint remover (taped roller) to remove hairs and extra threads.
Happy Quilting!

Tips & Recommendations

Inspirational

Guidelines from God

We all need reminders!

Effective Immediately,

please be aware that there are changes YOU need to make in YOUR life. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill My promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. I apologize for any inconvenience, but after all that I am doing, this seems very little to ask of you. Please, follow these 10 guidelines:

1. QUIT WORRYING: Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

  • 2. PUT IT ON THE LIST: Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not YOUR list. Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can't help you until you turn it over to Me. And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all... God. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.
  • 3. TRUST ME: Once you've given your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on My list. Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask.
  • 4. LEAVE IT ALONE: Don't wake up one morning and say, 'Well, I'm feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here.' Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It's simple. You gave Me your burdens and I'm taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don't you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job.
  • 5. TALK TO ME: I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I'm in control. But there's one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don't forget to talk to Me - OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend.
  • 6. HAVE FAITH: I see a lot of things from up here that you can't see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I'm doing. Trust Me; you wouldn't want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?
  • 7. SHARE: You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven't heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.
  • 8. BE PATIENT: I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush
  • 9 BE KIND: Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences.
  • 10. LOVE YOURSELF: As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by Me for one reason only -- to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself. It makes My heart aches when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to Me. Don't ever forget....
  • Touch someone with your love. Rather than focus upon the thorns of life, smell the roses and count your blessings!

    Charla

We don't have to be perfect today.
We don't have to be better than someone else.
All we have to do is to be the very best we can.

    Laughter the Best Medicine

In Merrie's absense, we have rhis from Wayne & Jenny.

CANNON BALLS !!! DID YOU KNOW THIS ? I DIDN'T

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus,it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. And all this time, you thought that was just a vulgar expression, didn't you? You must send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to at least a few uneducated friends.

    Health Matters

Have you gotten into the habit of eating out? While homemade is generally healthier, here are nine ways to ensure that you keep a handle on your diet.

Soup or Salad? Answer: Salad. A salad of mixed greens and raw vegetables, coupled with a light, healthy dressing will give you more fibre and a healthy dose of disease-fighting antioxidants found in raw vegetables.

    • 1. Make Your Own Takeout

    • 2. What is a Serving?

    • 3. Portions Down to Size

    • 4. Best Health: Oh-mega!

Always think vegetables. How are you going to get veggies into the meal? If you don't want to cook, then fill a salad bar container with raw veggies. Avoid too many marinated veggies.

Hit the seafood section. Many upscale grocers will steam or broil your fish selection for free or for just a small charge. That way, you're getting the unadulterated fish without the hassle of cooking it. Try some steamed shrimp, clams or lobster. The price alone will keep your portions healthy!

Have an indoor picnic for dinner. For a fresh take on healthy eating, buy a loaf of wheaty bread, strawberries, a favorite low-fat cheese, some thinly sliced roast beef or turkey, a small tub of olives, pre-cooked shrimp, cherry tomatoes, pre-sliced green or red peppers and bite-size carrots. When you get home, throw it all on the table and - after properly cleaning the produce - declare dinner served. This type of "grazing" dinner is fun, easy and a pleasant surprise. Make it a bimonthly ritual.

Skip the buffets. Those by-the-pound Chinese, noodle and chicken wing buffets at large grocery stores can be a health nightmare. First, the containers are large, so you tend to buy too much. Second, many of the foods are fried and many more are packed with oil, salt and sugar to boost the flavor.

Order by the serving size, not by weight. When ordering prepared foods from behind the counter, ask the server to give you enough the number of people eating. For example, "I need enough to serve three people, and I'm serving a salad and brown rice along with it." If the server is no help, then go by the palm of your hand. You want a serving size of meat or protein about the size of your hand. The rest of the meal you can round out with vegetables and whole grains.

Go for sushi. Low in fat, high in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, sushi is one of your best bets when running into your local grocer for dinner. Can't stand the thought of raw fish? Most groceries stock a selection of cooked fish sushi or even veggie-only sushi.

Pick up a rotisserie chicken. Add a salad-in-a-bag, a box of instant brown rice and some sliced tomatoes and youve got a healthy, easy, barely-have-to-cook meal. Remove the skin. Much of the internal fat from a rotisserie chicken drips out in the cooking, but the skin still holds lots of the stuff.

Choose prepared soups made with veggies in place of meat, like black bean soup, lentil soup or minestrone. Little fat is added to these soups. However, avoid creamy or cheesy soups like broccoli-and-cheese or cream of asparagus. If you're not sure, ask about the composition of the soup stock. The best is vegetable broth, followed by chicken broth, then beef and finally cream.

Our planet awareness site, Planet Kryzys has many interesting stories of different aspects of a planet under Crisis. Among them some brand new ones from our new correspondent in Perth Australia, Robyn, who has sent in stories about Australian animals like the Koala and kangaroo, as well as a national Park and the adventures of moving a huge tree hundreds of years old. Do please take a moment to visit it, and maybe it will remind you that YOUR area has something interesting to offer the rest of the world.

We often get a mention of National or State Parks, for example, connected with photos received. Can you please ask members to send me information on such parks they have near them or have visited. As well as appearing in the Global, I'd like to expand a new section in the Planet Awareness site on parks.]

    KING'S PARK - Perth Australia
Kings Park is a 4.06 square kilometres (1,003 acres) park located on the western edge of Perth, Western Australia central business district. The park is a mixture of grassed parkland, botanical gardens and natural bushland on Mount Eliza.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden overlooks the Swan River and Darling Range and showcases an outstanding collection of Western Australia flora. It is a popular place for picnics, pleasant walks, cultural and ceremonial events.
Nearly two thirds of the Park is natural bushland containing 319 species of native plants and around 80 bird species. The balance of the Park is made up of superbly cultivated gardens and open recreational areas.
For Western Australians and for the many interstate and international visitors, Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a place of inspiration, relaxation, recreation and wonder. The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority manages Kings Park and Botanic Garden in accordance with the Kings Park and Botanic Garden Management Plan 2004-2009, to ensure the conservation of native biological diversity and cultural heritage icons, while providing for the diverse range of visitor interests.
Sent in by Robyn, Perth Australia
The term bushland usually refers to an area that has only a sparse flora and fauna. This term was first used to describe the harsh Australian Outback and the red semi-desert that covers a significant part of the inner continent. The soil is usually very salty and therefore only specialized plants and animals can survive. Human survival in the bushlands has a whole mythology evolving around it, with the legendary stories of trackers and bushrangers deeply entrenched in Australian folklore. Probably the best survivors out there are the Aboriginals, who have learned how to blend in with nature and become a part of it.

A new Nature Photo contest has started and as fitting with our Planet awareness site, it is of course nature based, and the theme this time is Nature's SKY. You have plenty of time to watch out for those sunsets, cloud formations, rainbows, storms, night skies etc etc

      Baking Terms 101

      • Beat
To combine ingredients vigorously with a spoon, fork, wire whisk, hand beater or electric mixer until the ingredients are smooth and uniform.
      • Blend
To combine ingredients with a spoon, wire whisk, or rubber scraper until very smooth and uniform. A blender or food processor may also be used, depending on the job.
      • Boil
To heat a liquid until bubbles rise continuously and break on the surface and steam is given off. For a rolling boil, the bubbles form rapidly and will not stop forming even when the liquid is stirred.
      • Fold
To combine ingredients lightly while preventing loss of air by using two motions: Using a rubber spatula, first cut down vertically through the mixture. Next, slide the spatula across the bottom of the bowl and up the side, turning the mixture over. Repeat these motions after rotating the bowl one-fourth turn with each series of strokes.
      • Grease
To rub the inside surface of a pan with solid shortening, using a pastry brush, wax paper or paper towels, to prevent food from sticking during baking. Nonstick cooking spray may also be used; do not use butter or margarine (especially in a baked recipe) because sticking may occur.
      • Grease and Flour
To rub the inside surface of a pan with solid shortening before dusting it with flour, to prevent food from sticking during baking. After flouring the pan, turn it upside down, tapping the bottom to remove excess flour. If the batter to be added to the pan is chocolate, HERSHEY'S Cocoa may be used in place of flour to add a rich brown coating to the final product.
      • Heat Oven
To turn the oven controls to the desired temperature, allowing the oven to heat thoroughly before adding food. Heating takes about 10 minutes.
      • Mix
To combine ingredients in any way that distributes them evenly. This can be accomplished using a hand utensil or an electric mixer.
      • Soften
To allow cold food, such as butter, margarine or cream cheese, to stand at room temperature until no longer hard. Generally this will take 30 to 60 minutes.
      • Stir
To combine ingredients with a circular or "figure 8" motion until they are of a uniform consistency.
      • Whip
To beat ingredients with a wire whisk, hand rotary beater or electric mixer to add air and increase volume until ingredients are light and fluffy, such as with whipping cream or egg whites.

I think we need some really strong prayers. With Mother sick, children and grandchildren, things are really in a turmoil right now.
