May 23rd Edition
days until Reunion 2008 in INTRIGUING SOUTH AMERICA ! ![]() Happy Memorial Day USA Read all about Memorial Day in the May Trivia Pages.
BigSisPat's Journal This past Saturday was the most beautiful day weather wise, as Crofton came alive with the first official summer holiday weekend, Victoria Day weekend. On Saturdays from May to October the Crofton Market operates on a lovely little green space near the Crofton Ferry.
To quote from the Crofton news letter, "Crofton at a Glance": It's the perfect way to start the weekend, get out and meet your neighbours, enjoying the sun and the sea air. Taking advantage of this, several of us from Twin Gables, held a yard sale. What a perfect day to sit outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather, not to mention meeting and greeting all sorts of interesting people on the prowl for that unique buy. Yard sales are fun, but they are a lot of work. I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but I broke even, I made enough money to cover what I bought from my to yard sale cohorts. LOL, what can I say along with Thrift Stores, and Flea Markets, yard sales are my favourite place to shop.
Until next time:
"People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

One Man's Kingdom?
At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were! One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines. So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.
![]()
You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture. Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!! However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!! After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away. What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?
![]() Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name. The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe. His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets. Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.
![]() This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.
![]() Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.
![]() Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see. Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works. The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

A NEW study has confirmed what people in the Top End have long known - soaring temperatures and overcast skies make tempers fray. Surgeons at Royal Darwin Hospital who analysed fracture rates found that so-called "mango madness", - a period of extreme weather tension that triggers violence as the wet season hits - is not just a myth. An analysis presented at a medical conference in Hong Kong today showed fracture hospitalisations were 40 per cent higher in October and November when the Northern Territory had high temperatures with constant cloud cover and no rain. "It's also when the mango is harvested, so now it's official," said surgeon Mahiban Thomas. "When there are mangos in the markets there is madness in the streets."

Every member of the WWWCOF gives their best of their time and abilities; each one deserves this award! Featured Pet of the Week THIS WEEKS FEATURED PET IS Valter's dog Meggy
Recently our pet dog (Sandy) had died, she was 15 years old and naturally for a Poodle she had a normal life's time. We had gotten a huge sadness, after all she was a familys member, no doubts. Well, we decided then don't get a new pet dog nevermore, but few months ahead our house was very silent and everybody were missing her. And then we decided to buy a new Poodle and with the same color how was the Sandy, I mean totally black. We named her as Meggy. Our certification told us that the Meggy would be a very small Poodle, but we can't believe 100% in these certifications. Meggy didn't stop her growing up and became a medium Poodle, exactly like the Sandy was. Well my friends, now she is 1 year old only, and believes me or not she is the Sandy's reincarnation, she has done everything like the Sandy, she is much seemed with the Sandy, she yelps, and eats, and plies like the Sandy, it is amazing. She has been our house's Queen!!! She brought back our happiness, and everyone when arrives from the job has dedicated at least 30 minutes to play with her, its wonderful because she is able to push out all our stress and we can smiles again. We really think that it is a God's gift. By the way, beside Meggy this is my loved wife Sueli.
Remember: Your pets are your most loyal family members, giving unconditional Love. So Don't forget to give them a big hug today.
I am looking for more stories about your PET ....... please submit to me so I may feature them in the newsletter Pet Column. email your stories to me,
REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008
With less than five months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.
![]()
Who are we going to add to this group for reunion 2008?
For a decent restaurant meal visitors can expect to pay upwards of 10 US$ (a McDonalds meal would be about 6 US$)
Mark Twain" To hold a Reunion we need people. If only one or two attend it would be just a visit! Daphne is perfectly willing to take care of "just a visit!" or a full blown reunion!!! She and others in Argentina have been hard at work finding out prices of different accomodation, transport, entry to events and places of interest, food meals etc. Of course, if it turns out to be "just a visit" that simplifies everything, down to home cooking and their own car!
So in fairness to our "hosts" and in order to make whatever arrangements are necessary they must know how many will be attending therefore a commitment has to be made by the end of April, 2008. The organization is already well underway as shown in our 2008 Reunion Website; now we need the cooporation and participation of members everywhere. REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008 Don't forget to start the action to get your passport up to date. Life is too short not to come to Argentine at least once, and Reunion 2008 is an excellent opportunity for that, a well as a good chance to meet all your on-line buddies in real life and have some fun getting to know them better. So come on, fill in the inscription form, let us know you are booking your ticket.
A lot of the WWWCOF members are wonderful poets and from time to time we are honoured to be given the opportunity to publish their poetry in Global Express so I thought why not hold a WWWCOF Poetry Contest. The goals of this would be to:
Please submit your poems directly to me for posting -
Other poems can be found on our Member Poetry Pages which I will be trying to transfer to the poetry journal but this task may not be completed by the deadline so do be sure to check out the poetry contained within these sites as well.
Last fall I was surprised by a visit from my good friend Linda from Red Deer, Alberta and she suggested that I read a children's book called "The Precious Present". Thought I would share the following with you.
"The Place to Be" - There is only ONE moment that you ever experience ... and that moment is NOW. The PAST is history. The FUTURE is a mystery. Living in the here and NOW is the ONLY place to be. For it is all you ever truly have.
The precious present is not something that someone gives you, it is a gift you give yourself. It is wise for me to learn from the past, It is also wise to think about the future, And when I lose myself I lose what is most precious to me, my life my present moment. But learning to be in the present is not going to be easy. The present is what is. When I see the present, accept the present, Pain is simply the difference between what is and what I want it to be. When I feel guilty over my imperfect past, My past was the present and my future will be the present. As long as I continue to stay in the present, I am happy forever: Because forever is always the present, I can only live in the now. I will savor each moment in my life... the apparently good and the apparently bad... Even if I don't understand why, for the first time in my life It doesn't really matter. I now accept each of my precious moments on this planet as a gift. Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then, be that life. What the world needs is people who have come alive.
FUNA most pleasant thought for today! Spring has arrived!

IMPROVE YOUR KNIFE SKILLS IN THE KITCHEN1. Forget what celebrity and iron chefs do with knives - they're professionals. They do it for a living. Sure, it looks real fancy when they go at almost the speed of light chopping onions or parsley, but those routines take much practice and special skills to perfect. 2. Purchase good knives and keep them sharp. Learn how to use a steel or honing stone. 3. Don't hold a knife in such a manner that draws the sharp edge towards you. Too many people have been hurt slicing a bagel in half. 4: When slicing round ingredients like onions, first cut them in half. Then place the flat end on the cutting surface and slice or chop. Trying to steady round items while chopping or slicing means a trip to the hospital. 5. Always curl fingertips in and under your knuckles to hold the item you're cutting. 6. Wield a knife at your own pace. Don't worry about going slow. Keeping your fingers safe is more important. 7. Learn how to rock a knife rather than drawing it across the object like a saw. For example, when slicing carrots place the knife tip on the cutting surface and lift only the handle leaving the tip of the blade on the surface, then rock the knife. It's this technique that makes celebrity chefs look so cool and fast. 8. Keep a first-aid kit in the kitchen in case you need it. Inspirational StoriesBE SURE TO READ THE LAST STORY... Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.
The winner was: When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy just said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry.'
![]() Teacher Debbie Moon's first graders were discussing a picture of a family. One little boy in the picture had a different hair color than the other members. One of her students suggested that he was adopted. A little girl said, 'I know all about adoption, I was adopted..' 'What does it mean to be adopted?', asked another child. 'It means', said the girl, 'that you grew in your mommy's heart instead of her tummy!'
![]() On my way home one day, I stopped to watch a Little League base ball game that was being played in a park near my home. As I sat down behind the bench on the first-base line, I asked one of the boys what the score was. 'We're behind 14 to nothing,' he answered with a smile. 'Really,' I said. 'I have to say you don't look very discouraged.' 'Discouraged?', the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face... 'Why should we be discouraged? We haven't been up to bat yet.'
![]() Whenever I'm disappointed with my spot in life, I stop and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying out for a part in the school play. His mother told me that he'd set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement. 'Guess what, Mom,' he shouted, and then said those words that will remain a lesson to me.....'I've been chosen to clap and cheer.'
![]() An eye witness account from New York City , on a cold day in December, some years ago: A little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the young boy and said, 'My, but you're in such deep thought staring in that window!' 'I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,'was the boy's reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel. By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him.. She patted him on the head and said, 'No doubt, you will be mor e comfortable now.' As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her. 'Are you God's wife?'

Common Expressions - Origin & Meaning Point-blank Meaning Close enough to go directly to a target. Origin In the Late Middle Ages, when 'point-blank' was coined, archery and artillery targets were usually white. 'Blank' derives from the French 'blanc', which of course means white. 'Point' is a little more ambiguous. What was first meant by 'point-blank range' was rather more precise than our current meaning. Then, as now, it meant 'too close to miss', but the specific meaning was 'within the distance that a missile travels in a direct line, with no perceptible drop due to gravity'. The 'point' in the term may have referred to the point of the arrow that was about to be fired - if the point coincided with the target in the archer's eyeline then the target would be hit, so long as it was within 'point-blank range'. Another interpretation is that 'point' was a verb and that 'point-blank' just meant 'pointing at the (blanc) target'. The expression betrays its ye-olde origins by appearing first in print in the form of 'poynt blancke'. An example of that comes from the English mathematician Thomas Digges' Arithmetical Military Treatise, 1579, asking the kind of question that might have turned up in a Tudor maths lesson (no wonder they crept like snails, unwilling to school): If a Falcon that carrieth poynt blancke 150 pase, at vtmost randon randge 1300 pases, I demaunde howe farre a Culuering at his vtmost randon will reach, that at poynt blancke, or leuell, rangeth 250 pase. Note: Falcons and culverins were cannons, small and large respectively. Into the 17th century and the 'direct level flight' meaning was alluded to by no less an author than Sir Walter Raleigh, in The History of the World, 1614: Training his Archers to shoot compasse, who had bin accustomed to the point blanke. Note: Compass meant 'curved', as in the flight of an arrow over a long distance. The figurative 'direct and blunt' meaning that we now often use is found in phrases like 'asked/denied/refused pointblank'. This also came into use around the turn of the 17th century and was listed in John Florio's English/Italian dictionary A worlde of wordes, 1598, in which he equates 'forthright' with 'point blanke'. *"Brain in the News" is a weekly commentary on how brain science relates
to the news. The brain is involved in everything we do. Wherever there
are human stories the brain is involved. From the impact of war and
natural disasters on the brain to drug abuse scandals to courtroom
dramas to politics the brain is in the news, and you can read about it
here. * Blood Pressure and the Brain Our vital organs and body functions are very much interconnected. We have no problem making the connection between our heart and lungs or our stomach and liver, but we sometimes forget how much the brain is affected by everything else that happens in our body. Heres a recent article from Psychology Today magazine that highlights the growing body of research connecting brain function and other health issuesThe next time a nurse inflates a blood pressure cuff around your bicep, pay attention. Those numbers are not just important for your heart, but for your brain as well. It's becoming increasingly clear that high blood pressure, or hypertension, is at the root of much cognitive decline that has previously been attributed to aging. The more that scientists scrutinize brain function, and especially memory, the more they conclude that we have the ability to keep our memory and spirit strong well into old age. But it depends on how well we nourish our brain throughout life. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure of 140/90 or above. The first number is the measurement of the blood's force against artery walls when the heart is beating. The second number is the pressure between beats. A person is hypertensive if either number is too high. Most people think salt is the culprit in high blood pressure. In the vast majority of hypertensives, salt isn't the root of the problem. Only about one third of people with high blood pressure are what doctors call "salt sensitive." "The rest of the folks can eat all the salt they want without seeing much change in their blood pressure," says Shari Waldstein, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, who studies the cognitive consequences of hypertension. People whose diets are not to blame can pinpoint the problem through a trial of medications that target differing pathways in the body. Blood pressure is affected by many of the body's systems, including kidney function, hormones such as insulin and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Regardless of cause, high blood pressure is extremely dangerous, especially for people who don't know they have it, typically people who rarely see a doctor. Hypertension has few symptoms; some sufferers complain of headaches, nosebleeds or shortness of breath but for the most part the body suffers in silence. High blood pressure does its damage by weakening the blood vessels, over time leading the inner lining to slough off. Vessels can be weakened to the point that they tear, causing sudden death or disability via a stroke or aneurysm. Hypertension can also lead to heart attacks. But long before it creates a health emergency, hypertension takes a subtle toll on mental faculties. It can reduce attention, learning, memory and decision-making skills in ways that can be clearly seen in studies. "Generally, whatever problems impact cardiovascular health also affect cognitive functioning," says Merrill Elias, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at Boston University who has studied hypertension for 35 years. Indeed, some researchers now believe that a substantial amount of age-related mental decline has little to do with age and much to do with blood pressure. Waldstein says there's a large body of research linking hypertension directly to brain function, but scientists don't yet know how it causes damage at the cellular level. Elias says high blood pressure exerts a constant stress on the brain and cardiovascular system that appears to be cumulative. "It's more of a problem for people who don't go to the doctor," he says. "Just think of it as your brain taking a hit every day." The damage to the brain can come in a variety of forms. In the elderly, more than half of whom suffer from hypertension, the damage can be detected on MRIs in the form of "white matter lesions." These are pinpoint lesions in the brain's message-carrying axons that affect cognitive function, especially weakening memory and reasoning and significantly impacting quality of life. High blood pressure can also cause small strokes that may go unnoticed, but which diminish the brain's capacity to function. Other people who have chronic hypertension actually have small spots on their brain where the tissue is dead, says Elias. But that doesn't mean that high blood pressure is a disease of old age. For one thing, many people who are in their 20s and 30s suffer from it as well. It's especially important for younger people to control their blood pressure so that the damage doesn't start early and snowball over time. But neither is high blood pressure inevitable with age. Blood pressure can be kept in check by keeping cholesterol low, not smoking and limiting salt. But perhaps the most important factor is keeping obesity at bay, a struggle most Americans are not winning. "Weight is a biggie," says Elias. "The more you weigh, the more pressure there is." Getting your weight, blood pressure and diet under control will help you think better, have better relationships, be a better parent, co-worker, friend and spouse. All of those things are directly related to your brain. Its just not reasonable to think you can neglect one area of health and not have it affect other areas. If your brain is not working at its best, you are not at your best. So, if blood pressure is a problem for you please make sure youre getting good treatment to keep it under control.
To your brain health,
Pain herbs fight menstrual pains better than drugs - Chinese herbs may be more effective in relieving period pains, than many of the drugs on the market. Researchers in Australia said herbal mixtures extracted from bark and roots liquorice root, cinnamon bark and fennel fruit, not only relieve menstrual cramps, but also reduce the recurrence of the conditions, by affecting the hormonal balance in ovaries, reducing the pain. While there is no indication that that Chinese herbal medicines caused secondary effects, doubt was cast on the claim by saying that very few were clinical studies with no evidence that such herbs were safe ![]() I hope you all are able to open this attachment. ![]() Pray for Others
The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily! 1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests. How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer. Please visit Charla's Prayer Request Page to Pray for Others.
![]() Please email Charla, from Florida, USA with any Praises, Requests and/or UPDATES Thank you. May God Bless Each One and Have a Great Week!
