days until Reunion 2008 in INTRIGUING SOUTH AMERICA ! ![]() Happy Victoria Day Canada Read all about Victoria Day in the May Trivia Pages. Yvonne and I will be in Lynden, Washington at the Mt. Baker Kennel Club Dog Show this weekend and ask our friends to please wish Damien good luck in the competition. I am sure to have a story for next week all about it .... hopefully even some pictures. Mercedes goes in for her surgery on Tuesday.
Love Thy Neighbor
Lady Bird Johnson, the first lady of the United States (1963-1969) once said, "While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many." One of the things I have discovered living in a small community such as Crofton, but especially here at Twin Gables, the act of being neighborly is alive and well. When I moved here from Ontario a little over a month ago, I had with me, as the saying goes, the clothes on back, and a toothbrush. Of course I did have a little more than that, and fortunately these units do come furnished, including, bedding, dishes, and kitchen stuff. But I had no groceries, and very little money. The first thing I was told about, was a weekly food bank, held in a local church, and called "Harvest House". Visiting there has allowed me to start building up my pantry slowly. But, there are certain items not provide, and many of my neighbors have been kind when I've gone to borrow the proverbial, "cup of sugar". Another thing that is somewhat difficult is transportation, but several of my neighbors have provided me a lift when needed, and that is certainly greatly appreciated. Then there was the time, I turned on my computer and to my horror, everything on the screen had a blue tine to it. No other color was visible. I tried everything I could think of, to no avail. Then, during a conversation with the young couple (who incidentally are also from Ontario) from down the end, I mentioned my computer problem. The husband, it turns out, is a computer geek. He came right in and immediatelyidentified my problem, and showed me how to fix it. Of course the neighborliness is abundant here, from the local shopkeepers, to members of the Senior Center, to the members of the church that I ateend as well. It sure gives me a sense of warmth, and security, knowing there are folks out there looking after me, and of course Max. I Hope you also have that same feeling in your community, and if so I'd love to hear about it. Until next time: Leviticus 19:18: " ...thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD."

One Man's Kingdom?
At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were! One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines. So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.
![]()
You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture. Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!! However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!! After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away. What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?
![]() Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name. The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe. His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets. Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.
![]() This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.
![]() Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.
![]() Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see. Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works. The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

It is a very complex situation with the Indigenous people. Many were taken and some were found not to have been taken. The apology was given instead of saying Sorry because there was a fear of many compensation claims.

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008
With less than five months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here. This week I am going to talk about places of interest worth a visit within a half day or day trip from the city of Mar del Plata Within the city are many shops of all kinds, theatres, museums, theme parks, parks and open spaces with lots to see and do. Sierra y Laguna de los Padres (Hills and Lake of the Jesuit Fathers) just 15 minutes drive out from the city. A Tourist complex consisting of recreation grounds, campsites, lake for boating and fishing and a nature reserve. A bit of history of Sierra de los Padres:
In November of 1746 , the Jesuit missionaries settled here, sent by the Spanish Crown and founded the mission Our Lady of Pillar. They found the area populated by different tribes who frequently attacked the mission which ended up unpopulated in 1751, leaving behind documents of customs, uses, languages etc. still keep in one of the original structures that can be visited by the public. On the other side of the lake is the former home of Jose Hernandez, creator of “ Martin Fierro” (1826) a poetic classic describing in detail the life of traditional pre-independent Argentina.

A bit further away, there is a huge ocean park in San Clemente de Tuyu, and nearby there are thermal Marine baths where the water reaches 43ºC and has renowned healing powers.
For a decent restaurant meal visitors can expect to pay upwards of 10 US$ (a McDonald's meal would be about 6 US$) Reunion Argentina Inscription Form
Mark Twain" To hold a Reunion we need people. If only one or two attend it would be just a visit! Daphne is perfectly willing to take care of "just a visit!" or a full blown reunion!!! She and others in Argentina have been hard at work finding out prices of different accomodation, transport, entry to events and places of interest, food meals etc. Of course, if it turns out to be "just a visit" that simplifies everything, down to home cooking and their own car!
So in fairness to our "hosts" and in order to make whatever arrangements are necessary they must know how many will be attending therefore a commitment has to be made by the end of April, 2008. The organization is already well underway as shown in our 2008 Reunion Website; now we need the cooporation and participation of members everywhere. REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008 Don't forget to start the action to get your passport up to date. Life is too short not to come to Argentine at least once, and Reunion 2008 is an excellent opportunity for that, a well as a good chance to meet all your on-line buddies in real life and have some fun getting to know them better. So come on, fill in the inscription form, let us know you are booking your ticket. This Week, with views to reunion Argentina 2008: REUNION QUIZ #1

Last fall I was surprised by a visit from my good friend Linda from Red Deer, Alberta and she suggested that I read a children's book called "The Precious Present". Thought I would share the following with you.
"The Place to Be" - There is only ONE moment that you ever experience ... and that moment is NOW. The PAST is history. The FUTURE is a mystery. Living in the here and NOW is the ONLY place to be. For it is all you ever truly have.
The precious present is not something that someone gives you, it is a gift you give yourself. It is wise for me to learn from the past, It is also wise to think about the future, And when I lose myself I lose what is most precious to me, my life my present moment. But learning to be in the present is not going to be easy. The present is what is. When I see the present, accept the present, Pain is simply the difference between what is and what I want it to be. When I feel guilty over my imperfect past, My past was the present and my future will be the present. As long as I continue to stay in the present, I am happy forever: Because forever is always the present, I can only live in the now. I will savor each moment in my life... the apparently good and the apparently bad... Even if I don't understand why, for the first time in my life It doesn't really matter. I now accept each of my precious moments on this planet as a gift. Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then, be that life. What the world needs is people who have come alive.
FUNA little girl asked her mom, "How did the human race appear?" The mother answered, "God made Adam and Eve and they had children and so was all mankind made." Two days later the girl asked her father the same question. The father answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved." The confused girl returned to her mother and said, "mom how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and dad said they developed from monkeys?" The mother answered, "Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his".

I did not know this!!! I ve been using aluminum foil for more years than I care to remember. Great stuff, but sometimes it can be a pain. You know, like when you are in the middle of doing something and you try to pull some foil out and the roll comes out of the box. Then you have to put the roll back in the box and start over. The darn roll always comes out at the wrong time. Well, I would like to share this with you. Yesterday I went to throw out an empty Reynolds foil box and for some reason I turned it and looked at the end of the box. And written on the end it said, Press here to lock end . Right there on the end of the box is a tab to lock the roll in place. How long has this little locking tab been there? I then looked at a generic brand of aluminum foil and it had one, too. I then looked at a box of Saran wrap and it had one too! I can t count the number of times the Saran warp roll has jumped out when I was trying to cover something up. I m sharing this with my friends that did not know this. If you already know this, delete this message and don t e-mail me and make me feel dumber than I already feel. If you didn t know this, e-mail me and let me know so I won t feel so dumb. I hope I m not the only person that didn t know about this.

Snails can be a gastronomer's delight or a gardener's nightmare especially if feasting on one's beloved hostas. However, that said they
have some incredible uses. Believe it or not the trail of slime they leave has been found to be effective against stomach ulcers
and chronic bronchitis by French Researchers and is also used in some "beauty" products. Most ground snails are "vegetarians." The snail is both male and female and is most active at night or on cloudy days. They don't like hot and/or dry conditions and during winter they hibernate in the ground. The snail has two pair of tentacles on it's head, one for smelling and feeling their way to food and the longer pair holds their eyes. They have no ears but do have a foot. The largest snail can grow up to 15 inches and weigh 2 pounds For more about this fascinating creature go to: About Snails

Common Expressions - Origin & Meaning To bandy words
Meaning
Origin
The word was in use in English by the 16th century and had counterparts in both French (bander) and Spanish (bandear), although which of these came first is uncertain. The sport originally associated with bandying wasn't bandy itself, but tennis. Raphael Holinshed's The firste volume of the chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande, 1577, includes:
He was probably referring there to tennis 'balles' and tennis was mentioned explicitly in Randle Cotgrave's A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, 1611. Cotgrave translated the French verb 'bander' as the English 'bandie' and gave an example of its use as "to bandie at Tennis". The 16th century was well before the development of lawn tennis and the game being referred to was what we now call real tennis (or in some countries court tennis) - which may be a corruption of royal tennis. This was an indoor game in which the walls form part of the court. The best known court, which is still in use, was built at Hampton Court Palace by Henry VIII in 1530.
A 'bandy' was a particular sort of tennis stroke. Players would shout 'A Bandy, Sir', when returning the ball. A 'bandy' must have been different in some way from other strokes - players would presumably have soon got tired of shouting that warning every time the ball was played. It is known that a 'check' was a return in which the ball didn't strike the walls, i.e. the only form of stroke allowed in modern-day tennis. It is possible that a 'bandy' was a 'check' that was returned - that's speculation though, we just don't know.
Whatever the precise meaning in real tennis, the word bandy was taken up to mean 'to and fro' and soon became used in other expressions. For example, Shakespeare used it in King Lear, 1605:
Samuel Johnson used it in 1767, as reported by Boswell, 1831:
There are various records of people 'bandying taunts' and 'bandying arguments' during the 17th and 18th centuries. The first example that I can find of 'bandy words with' is in The Fair Maid of the Inn, by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, 1750, in which a character refuses to be taunted into an argument concerning a promise of marriage:

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.
How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
Please visit Charla's Prayer Request Page to Pray for Others.
Please email Charla, from Florida, USA with any Praises, Requests and/or UPDATES Thank you. May God Bless Each One and Have a Great Week!
Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the one's who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason.. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. Friends are like balloons; once you let them go, you can't get them back. So I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you.
