Hello everyone.
Bigsis Pat's Journal
I have been asked what I have been up to.
Well, last year when I was here I joined a wonderful new Church called Warmland Church, and I also joined the Senior?s Center here in Crofton.
Now that I am back I have bee getting very active in both.
At the church they have something called ?Life Groups?, which are small groups that meet during the week in different homes, for the purpose of discovering life together.
As a new Christian, this has been tremendously helpful to me, and I have enjoyed meeting these folks for fellowship and worship.
Next Monday our group is having a potluck supper which I am really looking forward to.
At the Senior?s Center I have been attending the Wednesday Soup & Sandwich lunch, which only costs $3.00, and afterwards we play 31, a card game, and it is a barrel of laughs.
I also attended a Tea & Bake Sale this past Monday, hosted by the Crofton Hospital Auxiliary and have been invited to join, for a whopping cost of $7.00 a year.
At the Tea they had a Silent Auction, where I bid on two absolutely beautiful lace table toppers, for $2.50, and I won!
Last Saturday, several of us here at Twin Gables held a yard sale; unfortunately the weather wasn?t very cooperative. After two hours of drizzle, I packed up and brought my stuff inside.
But we are going to try again on the 17th of this month.
Max and I have resumed our walks on the sea walk and I have been doing some beach combing, finding some lovely shells, driftwood and interesting rocks.
Both of us are doing well, and I think the sea air is good for our health.
Will keep you posted on my social life, until next time,
"Do not count what you have lost, count what you have left."
Love Pat

Jan's Ramblings
Saturday was The Messengers concert, now held on the first Saturday of each month.
It was the first time in our new cafe format, with afternoon tea rather than a sausage sizzle. Our audience is still small, but it was a great success, with some walk-up artists and an enthusiastic audience clapping and joining in. In the pic Joanne, who practices regularly for our concerts, is playing the mandolin. She did "Somewhere My Love", "Annie's Song" and "These Boots are made for Walking".
There were smiles all round, and agreement that it was a relaxing, pleasant Saturday afternoon.
We have a heavy schedule the rest of the week, Barry and I are the entertainment at a fundraiser morning tea at Richmond Lodge on Thursday, we take along 30 songs for that, the Group on Friday morning for a Cord Blood Fundraiser in the next town, Saturday Lynn and Ray sing at a wedding, and Sunday morning a baptism one hour west of here, and in the evening a praise and worship.

Our Furry Friends/ Family Members Featured Pet of the Week
Spike
Owners: Norma & Wayne Wilcox
Thank you so much for this article Norma.

This is our baby, Spike, or as I call her, SpikerBiker. When we had to put our other dog down because of her age and health, we visited the SPCA and I fell in love with this dog. The staff at the SPCA were a little concerned because she was beaten dog and we had children in our house. We discussed the situation and decided we would take her home and see if she fit in with the kids.
Spike walked in door, walked through the house and the rest is history. The kids love her and we can't imagine life without her.
We took her to our vet for a check-up. The vet guessed she was about 3 years old and she had scars on her head from being beaten. She certainly not abused in our home, in fact, I think she rules the roost.
Spike is now about 7 years old. She is a pampered pet and sometimes fussy about her food. I personally think she can spell because when don't want to her the word "Treat", I spell it, and she sits down waiting patiently for something.
So, this is our pet, Spike, living with Wayne, Norma, Mike & Amy Wilcox.

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008
With less than five months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.
This week I am going to talk about places of interest worth a visit within the city of Mar del Plata
One of the favourite places my son and granddaughter enjoy visiting is the SEA MUSEUM which has the biggest collection of shells from all over the world in South America. There are always on going activities and shows for all ages in there.
The port area, consists of the Naval Base, mainly submarines, occasionally other Naval and Civil ships open to the public. The fishing trawler area with deep-sea and offshore ships and also the presence of sea lions ,sea wolves and walruses. There are many restaurants there that offer straight from the trawler fresh fish and sea-food dishes, and shops where canned and fresh produce can be bought.
From the port, an off shore cruiser leaves several times a day for a trip along the coast and visit to the sea-wolf colony.
There are some 25 miles ( 40 Km ) of coast line, with different scenery along the way.
This includes a visit to "The Aquarium" where there are all kinds of sea / water based shows and interesting information. >
Within the city are many shops of all kinds, theatres, parks and open spaces with lots to see and do.
For a decent restaurant meal visitors can expect to pay upwards of 10 US$ (a McDonald's meal would be about 6 US$)
I have put all the prices into US dollars for your convenience though of course you would actually pay in Argentine pesos 1 US dollar is just over 3 Argentine pesos 100 US dollars would give you about 310 pesos, but please wait till you get here before changing your cash
Much more information about MAR DEL PLATA
The inscription form to take part in this unforgettable event can be found here: Reunion Argentina Inscription Form
We are still waiting to get estimates of minibus to take us everywhere, but all the companies insist on knowing how many they have to cater for. When we have an approximate price of this vital element, then we can calculate roughly how much visitors can expect to spend once here
For more details and estimated costs , email Daphne

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bow line, sail away from the safe harbour, explore, dream and discover. Mark Twain"
To hold a Reunion we need people. If only one or two attend it would be just a visit! Daphne is perfectly willing to take care of "just a visit!" or a full blown reunion!!! She and others in Argentina have been hard at work finding out prices of different accomodation, transport, entry to events and places of interest, food meals etc. Of course, if it turns out to be "just a visit" that simplifies everything, down to home cooking and their own car!
So in fairness to our "hosts" and in order to make whatever arrangements are necessary they must know how many will be attending therefore a commitment has to be made by the end of April, 2008.
The organization is already well underway as shown in our 2008 Reunion Website; now we need the cooporation and participation of members everywhere.
REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008 Please drop by and visit the official 2008 reunion website where you'll find alot of the information you need
Don't forget to start the action to get your passport up to date. Life is too short not to come to Argentine at least once, and Reunion 2008 is an excellent opportunity for that, a well as a good chance to meet all your on-line buddies in real life and have some fun getting to know them better. So come on, fill in the inscription form, let us know you are booking your ticket.

days until WWWCOF Poetry Contest Closes
Last fall I was surprised by a visit from my good friend Linda from Red Deer, Alberta and she suggested that I read a children's book called "The Precious Present". Thought I would share the following with you.
"The Place to Be" - There is only ONE moment that you ever experience ... and that moment is NOW. The PAST is history. The FUTURE is a mystery. Living in the here and NOW is the ONLY place to be. For it is all you ever truly have.
The Precious Present The precious present is not something that someone gives you, it is a gift you give yourself.
It is wise for me to learn from the past, But it is not wise for me to be in the past. For that is how I lose myself.
It is also wise to think about the future, and to prepare for the future, But it is not wise for me to be in the future. For that too, is how I lose myself.
And when I lose myself I lose what is most precious to me, my life my present moment.
But learning to be in the present is not going to be easy. Learning to be in the present is a process that will, have to be done over and over till It becomes a habit.
The present is what is. It is valuable, even if we don't know why. It is already just the way it is supposed to be.
When I see the present, accept the present, and experience the present, I am well, and I am happy!
Pain is simply the difference between what is and what I want it to be.
When I feel guilty over my imperfect past, or I am anxious over my unknown future, I do not live in the present I experience pain, I make myself ill, and I am unhappy.
My past was the present and my future will be the present. The present moment is the only reality I ever experience.
As long as I continue to stay in the present, I am happy forever:
Because forever is always the present, The present is simply who I am, just the way I am, Right now. And it is precious. I am precious, I am the precious present!
I can only live in the now. Living in the now makes me happy and I feel at peace with myself!
I will savor each moment in my life... the apparently good and the apparently bad...
Even if I don't understand why, for the first time in my life It doesn't really matter.
I now accept each of my precious moments on this planet as a gift. Credits: from Spencer Johnson MD author "The Precious Present".
Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then, be that life. What the world needs is people who have come alive. Howard Thurman

Hey all I have been quite but things been a little on the busy side. I have been teaching classes and have had very little time. Just thought I would come in and say hi and add to the candles page with a few tips of our own.
* Never throw away your old candles keep them in a tin and when you have enough you can melt these down and add a little strine (steric acid) or H1 hardener to the mixture. and taking your favorite mold create a new candle.
* If you are looking for a reallly unique finnish to a candle dribble 2 diferent coulours down the side of your molds and then finnish off with cold wax pour (82 deg c)
* Always rememeber to prime your wick for any new candles, this is to make sure that it burn properly. you do this by dipping your wick into you hot wax (90 - 100 deg c) and letting all th eair bubbles boil out.
Well that is just a few tips will be uploading a new craft to our site tonight dealing with recycling candles if you want a full step by step on how to do it.

Did You Know
Answer to this week's Google question is:
First of all kids, don't try this at home...
The speed of sound, or Mach I, is about 700 miles per hour. Driving at this speed you would not be able to hear anything going on behind you (because the sound waves could not catch up with you) so any speakers in the rear deck would be inaudible. You would hear sounds coming from in front of you but they would be increased in pitch 1 octave (the Doppler effect) so if you have speakers in the dashboard you're in luck. Along these same lines, the people on the street wouldn't hear you coming but would hear a loud sonic boom after you passed.
As for the 'speed of light' part of the question... Sorry to break this to you but there is a well known and heavily enforced speed limit in effect. It is highly advisable that you don't break it...

Common Expressions - Origin & Meaning
To bandy words
Meaning
To argue persistently.
OriginTo 'bandy' is to 'exchange', to 'toss to and fro'. This is the source of the name of the game bandy - a ferocious ball game similar to ice hockey.
The word was in use in English by the 16th century and had counterparts in both French (bander) and Spanish (bandear), although which of these came first is uncertain. The sport originally associated with bandying wasn't bandy itself, but tennis. Raphael Holinshed's The firste volume of the chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande, 1577, includes:
"Kingdoms... be no balles for me to bandie."
He was probably referring there to tennis 'balles' and tennis was mentioned explicitly in Randle Cotgrave's A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, 1611. Cotgrave translated the French verb 'bander' as the English 'bandie' and gave an example of its use as "to bandie at Tennis". The 16th century was well before the development of lawn tennis and the game being referred to was what we now call real tennis (or in some countries court tennis) - which may be a corruption of royal tennis. This was an indoor game in which the walls form part of the court. The best known court, which is still in use, was built at Hampton Court Palace by Henry VIII in 1530.
A 'bandy' was a particular sort of tennis stroke. Players would shout 'A Bandy, Sir', when returning the ball. A 'bandy' must have been different in some way from other strokes - players would presumably have soon got tired of shouting that warning every time the ball was played. It is known that a 'check' was a return in which the ball didn't strike the walls, i.e. the only form of stroke allowed in modern-day tennis. It is possible that a 'bandy' was a 'check' that was returned - that's speculation though, we just don't know.
Whatever the precise meaning in real tennis, the word bandy was taken up to mean 'to and fro' and soon became used in other expressions. For example, Shakespeare used it in King Lear, 1605:
"Do you bandy lookes with me, you Rascall?"
Samuel Johnson used it in 1767, as reported by Boswell, 1831:
"It was not for me to bandy civilities with my sovereign."
There are various records of people 'bandying taunts' and 'bandying arguments' during the 17th and 18th centuries. The first example that I can find of 'bandy words with' is in The Fair Maid of the Inn, by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, 1750, in which a character refuses to be taunted into an argument concerning a promise of marriage:
"I'll not bandy Words, but thus dissolve the contract."

Newspaper cutting, note from Sylvia from Dorset, UK:
Pain herbs fight menstrual pains better than drugs - Chinese herbs may be more effective in relieving period pains, than many of the drugs on the market. Researchers in Australia said herbal mixtures extracted from bark and roots liquorice root, cinnamon bark and fennel fruit, not only relieve menstrual cramps, but also reduce the recurrence of the conditions, by affecting the hormonal balance in ovaries, reducing the pain. While there is no indication that that Chinese herbal medicines caused secondary effects, doubt was cast on the claim by saying that very few were clinical studies with no evidence that such herbs were safe
