Friday the 13th Phobia Rooted in Ancient History John Roach for National Geographic News

This tommorow is Friday the 13th, and believe it or not the only one this year!
This Friday some people will be so paralyzed with fear they simply won't get out of bed. Others will steadfastly refuse to fly on an airplane, buy a house, or act on a hot stock tip. It's Friday the 13th, and they're freaked out.
"It's been estimated that [U.S] $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day because people will not fly or do business they would normally do," said Donald Dossey, founder of the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina.
Among other services, Dossey's organization counsels clients on how to overcome fear of Friday the 13th, a phobia that he estimates afflicts 17 to 21 million people in the United States.
Symptoms range from mild anxiety to full-blown panic attacks. The latter may cause people to reshuffle schedules or miss an entire day's work.
When it comes to bad luck of any kind, Richard Wisemana psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, Englandfound that people who consider themselves unlucky are more likely to believe in superstitions associated with bad luck.
"Their beliefs and behavior are likely to be part of a much bigger worldview," he said. "They will believe that luck is a magical force and that it can ruin their lives."
Wiseman found that one quarter of the 2,068 people questioned in a 2003 survey associate the number 13 with bad luck. People with such feelings, he found, are more likely to be anxious on days like Friday the 13th and thus more prone to have accidents. In other words, being afraid of Friday the 13th could be their undoing.

Ominous Number

So how did Friday the 13th become such an unlucky day?
Dossey, also a folklore historian and author of Holiday Folklore, Phobias and Fun, said fear of Friday the 13th is rooted in ancient, separate bad-luck associations with the number 13 and the day Friday. The two unlucky entities ultimately combined to make one super unlucky day.
Dossey traces the fear of 13 to a Norse myth about 12 gods having a dinner party at Valhalla, their heaven. In walked the uninvited 13th guest, the mischievous Loki. Once there, Loki arranged for Hoder, the blind god of darkness, to shoot Balder the Beautiful, the god of joy and gladness, with a mistletoe-tipped arrow.
"Balder died and the whole Earth got dark. The whole Earth mourned. It was a bad, unlucky day," said Dossey. From that moment on, the number 13 has been considered ominous and foreboding.

Feature Story for this week: Fathers' Day

Very curious, here in Brazil the Father's Day has been on August, not on June.
Nowadays here in Brazil we'll celebrate the Valentine's Day, more accurate on June 12th.
Anyway I am Father, and I'd like to mention that to be Father means to be dedicated and to open the hands from yours own value to share with the family's matters, mainly with sons' matters. It doesn't matter how old they are. If to be Mother means to suffer into paradise, to be Father means to be a good issues' managemen... lol.
I am sorry for your boring day in Canada, here in Brazil, despite to be winter the days still are sunny. The room temperature is around 20 / 30C depending on the place inside Brazil you are.
Best regards,
Valter Roda
Come to visit Brazil, I recommend!!!

Dia dos Pais // Father's Day - Brazil
2nd Sunday in August
Families get together for having lunch at father's home and sons give gifts to parents.

Editors Note: After reciving this email from Valter, I did some checking, and, like Brazil, there are many countries who celebrate Fathers' Day on a day different from our June celebration.

Here's what I found:

Father's Day Around the World

Around the world, people celebrate Fathers Day to honor dads and to express their love and affection for them. It may be noted that the date of Father's Day festival in not fixed and different countries around the world celebrate Father Day on different times of the year. Sometimes, even the manner of Father's Day celebration differ, what is common everywhere though is the spirit of the festival. In countries across the globe people take opportunity of Father's Day to honor their dad with cards, chocolates, flowers and other gift of love. Spending time with dad and indulging in fun-filled activities is another common feature of Father's Day celebration around the world.
Another interesting factor about Father's Day celebration is that people wish “Happy Father's Day” not just to their biological father, but also grandfather, stepfather, foster father, uncle, elder brother or anyone who plays the role of a father in their lives.
Father's Day Celebrations Around The World

Most people around the world celebrate Father's Day, but the dates to honor dads are not the same everywhere. In many countries the customs and traditions may be very different than the ones you know.
The earliest record of Father's Day was found in the ruins of Babylon. A young boy named Elmesu carved a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. He wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life.
No one knows what happened to Elmesu or his father, but the tradition of having a special day honoring fathers has continued through the years in countries all around the world.
In many countries, where the Catholic Church has had a important influence on the culture, Father's Day is celebrated on St. Joseph's Day (March 19). In recent times a secular celebration, not associated with any religion, has been celebrated in many of these countries to reflect the increased diversity of the people who live there. Some families choose one of the dates to celebrate Father's Day and ignore the other day, but some lucky dads actually get to celebrate Father's Day twice every year!

When is Father's Day where you live?
Argentina - the third Sunday in June
Australia - the first Sunday in September
Belgium - St. Joseph's Day & the second Sunday in June
Brazil - the second Sunday in August
Bulgaria - June 20
Canada - the third Sunday in June

Japan - the third Sunday in June
Lithuania - the first Sunday in June
Netherlands - the third Sunday in June
New Zealand - the first Sunday in September
Norway - the second Sunday in November
Portugal - St. Joseph's Day March 19
Spain - St. Joseph's Day March 19 Sweden - the second Sunday in November
Taiwan - August 8 ( in the Mandarin dialect of the Chinese language which many people speak in Taiwan, the numbers for this date – 8/8 – make the sound "ba ba"...and that is the same sound as the word father!)
Thailand - December 5 (This is the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej)
United Kingdom - the third Sunday in June
United States - the third Sunday in June

"HAPPY FATHER'S DAY"

He knew that along with the woman he fell in Love with, there was a package. He knew that package would not be easy to carry. As he asked himself, would the Love they felt now be enough to get them through the next few years? See that package was three sons. One 11 yrs old, one 5 1/2 years old and one but just 3. They decided their Love was worth the try. Two years later they shared the birth of their daughter.
Now as these boys grew, each had different needs and most certainly different personalities. During that journey down life's path the two youngest sons began to make undesirable choices. As she was pleading for his help to rear them she was also pushing away and over protecting her sons. He could not win for losing.
Time went on and their lives became more stressed and more involved with many bad choices her sons made. There was a point in their lives when the youngest son overdosed and almost died. He was there at her side the whole way. Agreeing or not.
Their daughter grew up, married and had a baby girl. The Light of their lives. This baby girl renewed something that had went away a long time before. As they held her tiny body and watched all the tubes in her, knowing they could lose her at any moment, they prayed for God to spare her life. Allow them to Love this child together. A symbol of their Love many years before.
Now this little one has grown to a precious young girl and lives with the two who held a Love for her that was unable to be put into words. She is bright and asks many questions. Her last one was can I have two Mommy's and two Daddy's? I asked why? She said she wants us to be her Mommy & Daddy as well as her Pop Pop & Mema.
So I want to say "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY" To my husband John who withstood the long walk of many hard roads. Who is here now with us as a family of three to Love, Play, and help write the chapters in this next new "Book of Life" once again.

WHEN GOD MADE A FATHER

When the good Lord was creating Fathers, he started with a tall frame.
A female angel nearby said, "What kind of Father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground why have you put Father so high up? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child into bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping."
God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I made him child-sized, whom would children have to look up to?"
And when God make a Father's hands, they were large and sinewy.
The angel shook her head and said, "Large hands can't manager diapers, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats."
And God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets, yet small enough to cup a small child's face in."
Then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders.
"Do you realize you just made a Father without a lap?" the angel clucked.
God said, "A mother needs a lap. A Father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, to balance a boy on a bicycle, or to hold a sleepy head on the way home from a circus.
God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had even seen when the angel could contain herself no longer.
"That's not fair, Do you honestly think those large boots are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when a baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?"
God smiled and said, "They'll work, you'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be hard and a challenge to fill.
God worked throughout the night, giving Father few words but a firm authoritative voice, eyes that saw everything, but remained calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, he added tears. Then he turned to the angel and said, "Now are you satisfied that he can love as much as a Mother?"
And the angel said no more.

One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Tips & Recommendations

checked this out with Snopes & also Best Buy site at bottom. It is all true.

No more Best Buy for me.

BEST BUY, MY FOOT

Best Buy has some bad policies.... Normally, I would not share this with others, however, since this could happen to you or your friends , I decided to share it. If you purchase something from, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, JC Penny, Sears etc. and you return the item with the receipt they will give you your money back if you paid cash, or credit your account if paid by plastic.
Well, I purchased a GPS for my car, a Tom Tom XL.S from 'Best Buy'. They have a policy that it must be returned within 14 days for a refund! So after 4 days I returned it in the original box with all the items in the box, with paper work and cords all wrapped in the plastic. Just as I received it, including the receipt.
I explained to the lady at the return desk I did not like the way it could not find store names. The lady at the refund desk said, there is a 15% restock fee, for items returned. I said no one told me that. I said how much would that be. She said it goes by the price of the item. It will be $45.00 Dollars for you. I said, all your going to do is walk over and place it back on the shelf then charge me $45.00 of my money for restocking? She said that's the store policy. I said if more people were aware of it they would not buy anything here! If I bought a $2000.00 computer or TV and returned it I would be charged $300.00 dollars restock fee? She said yes, 15%.
I said OK, just give me my money minus the restock fee.
She said, since the item is over $200.00 dollars, she can't give me my money back!!! Corporate has to and they will mail you a check in 7 to ten days.!! I said 'WHAT?!' It's my money!! I paid in cash! I want to buy a different brand..Now I have to wait 7 to 10 days.
She said well, our policy is on the back of your receipt. I said, do you read the front or back of your receipt?
She said well, the front! I said so do I, I want to talk to the Manager!.
So the manager comes over, I explained everything to him, and he said, well, sir they should of told you about the policy when you got the item. I said, No one, has ever told me about the check refund or restock fee, whenever I bought items from computers to TVs from Best Buy. The only thing they ever discussed was the worthless extended warranty program. He said Well, I can give you corporate phone number.
I called corporate. The guy said, well, I'm not supposed to do this but I can give you a 45.00 dollar gift card and you can use it at Best Buy. I told him if I bought something and returned it, you would charge me a restock fee on the item and then send me a check for the remaining 3 dollars. You can keep your gift card, I'm never shopping in Best Buy ever again, and if I would of been smart, I would of charged the whole thing on my credit card! Then I would of canceled the transaction. I would of gotten all my money back including your stupid fees! He didn't say a word!
I informed him that I was going to e-mail my friends and give them a heads up on this stores policy, as they don't tell you about all the little caveats.
So please pass this on. It may save your friends from having a bad experience of shopping at Best Buy

Haley

The Canine Lady<.B>

The manager here at Twin Gables has dubbed me "The Canine Lady", because of my new "career", dog walking.
I am walking two dogs, one belongs to my ne friend Fiona, who is visiting here from Edmonton, the other belongs to Christine, my neighbour across the way.
Haley is a 12 year old Border Collie who was abused. My friend Fiona got her from a rescue group in Edmonton, and has owned her for 2 years.
She is deaf, and is very skittish around younger, aagressive and loud dogs. She doesn't seem to have a problem with humans, and appears to like Max a lot.
Doggie, (yes that's her name) is 11 years old and is a Wolf Hound Collie mix. She was also rescued. Her former owner was away a lot, and she was kept tied up all day long. One day the owner had an accident and passed away. doggie, was taken to the local SPCA. Christine and her husband went there and rescued doggie and she has bee with Cjhristine now for 7 years and is loved very much.
Fiona is staying here at Twin Gables on a working vacation, and has to go into Nanaimo every day foor about 7 hours, and asked me if I could take Haley out a couple of times a day for exercise and to relive hereself. I said no problem.
Christine, is an older lady, and has trouble walking so she has to depend on others to walk Doggie for her, and offered to pay me to do it.
I don't take Haley & Doggie at the same time, as I don't think I could manage them both.
Doggie, being younger likes to get going, and it's all I can do to keep up with her. I don't have to leash Max, as he rarely goes far from me. When I do get out of site, and then he finally sees me, he comes running over, as if to say, wow, I thoght I'd lost you! lol. so I ususally take Doggie out around noon.
I take Haley out twice a day in the morning, and the afternoon. As soon as I say to Max, let's go walk Haley, he immediately runs to her door.
Haley, is a slow mover, which is fine by me. Max, on the other hand, has so much energy, it amamzes me (he is after all 16!). so he runs off does a little investigation, then will come barrelling back, just to check and make sure Haley is OK.
So now Max and I are geting lots of exercise walking the two dogs. I think he actually enjoys it as he is a very social dog with both other dogs and humans.

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008

This week's brain teaser: Very difficult.
A man is accused of the murder of another man, but the judge thinks there isn't enough evidence to condemn him. So he decides the fairest way he can think of to resolve the situation. He decides to shut the man up in a room that has two doors, one that leads to instant freedom, the other to instant death. There are two guards, on at each door, only they know which door is which. One of the guards always tells the absolute truth the other always lies.
The prisoner is allowed to ask just one question to just one of the guards to guarantee his freedom
What is the question? Look for the answer elsewhere in the newsletter!!
With four months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.

If it wasn't for last minute nothing would ever get done!!! Please let us know real soon

Milisa Gardner says: This can be Messy!!! But fun to make and great to eat. You could make this for dad on Father's Day... YUM YUM great recipe to do with kids
1 bag of pretzels - logs work well
Double boiler to melt the for chocolate or microwave safe bowl
2 bags of chocolate chips
Kitchen tongs and spoon
1 Tsp of butter
Waxed paper
Colored non-pareils, sprinkles, coconut, or chopped nuts
2 cookie sheets
1. Melt one bag of chocolate at a time, along with one teaspoon of butter. Melting in the microwave is safest when working with your kids. Melt chocolate in a microwave safe bowl for one minute and stir. If more heating is necessary, microwave 15 seconds at a time, stirring until smooth. If using the top of a double boiler on the stove, Mom should melt chocolate gradually. Bring the heated chocolate to work table, placing far from the reach of children to prevent burns. Chocolate can be gently reheated, if it gets too hard to easily dip.
2. Using tongs or a spoon, quickly dip pretzels in chocolate or hold with tongs and spoon on chocolate, allowing the excess to run off. Place dipped pretzels on waxed paper lined cookie sheets.
3. Using a spoon, sprinkle the chosen topping on the dipped pretzel and allow to harden. You may need to refrigerate for a while to help this along.
4. Once hardened, remove from sheets and store in a cool location, with waxed paper between layers.
Store in the refrigerator
Let me know how they turn out!

You see, we have recipes for all tastes in our marvellous cookbook. (but there is still plenty of room for more, so just keep them coming!!)

Our planet awareness site, Planet Kryzys has many interesting stories of different aspects of a planet under Crisis. Do please take a moment to visit it. Daphne from Argentina

PLANET KRYZYS, our Planet awareness site: has been updated with a novelty tree Jan of Australia, discovered on a walk. There are lots of interesting member notes in there
Bio fuels will clean the planet............of its poor.
It is becoming so evident, that there is no room for discussion. There is a direct relation between the rise in prices of food and the rise in demand for bio fuels.
The food crisis produced by the rocketing rise in price of basic foods around the world, will affect, in the coming years, in a frank and cruel way, more than 800 million people, mostly on the African continent, Asia, and the Caribbean, a large percentage of which will be children under 5.
The fact that the production of fuels of plant origin has entered as a competitor in the food production market, has drastically modified in record time, the quantity of the available offer in face of the constantly rising demand. Bio fuels are obtained from the same products and use the same land that is used to feed large part of the world population.
But this isn't all, because together with the price of grains and cereals, the price rises for the fodder for animals, and the value and use of spaces needed for the development, cause the rise in other basic products like meat, eggs and dairy produce.
In the last 8 year the quantity of corn destined for the production of ethanol in the USA alone has risen 500%. This means that in 2008 almost 100 million tons of corn alone, and in the US alone Hill be destined for fuel instead of feeding the people. During the last year the price of corn has risen 130%. The price of rice has shot from 300 dollars a ton to 1.200 dollars in the last few months.
About half the population of the planet survives on less than 2 dollars a day, and around a thousand million on less than a dollar a day. People for whom wheat, soy, rice and corn form the base of their food, and until the start of this food crisis counted for 75% of their income.
It is possible that in the next few years, it will not be possible to calculate these figures, as everyone will be trying to get food and water necessary for their own survival. The world food programme has warned that in the world reserves are at their lowest level in the last 30 years
Source: Ecoportal As if that isn"t all, there is the matter of over fishing in all the seas and oceans of the world. And please don't accuse me of pessimism. It is happening NOW

The answer to the brain teaser is the question: The prisoner goes to any of one of the guards and asks "If I ask your companion which door leads to instant freedom, what would he say?" Whatever the guard says, he takes the opposite door. How? Let's suppose he asks the guard who tells the truth. The guard knowing his partner will lie and would name the wrong door, tells the truth (i.e. his partners lie) Imagine door A is freedom and door B is death. The liar will say B for freedom. The honest one , knowing that his companion will answer B, so he tells the truth. So the prisoner takes the opposite door. If on the other hand, he asked the liar the same question, the liar, knowing his mate would tell the truth, tells a lie and says B

They Walk Among Us!

I was at the checkout of a Wal-Mart. The clerk rang up $46.64 charge. I gave her a fifty dollar bill. She gave me back $46.64. I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favor. She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was doing, and returned the money again. I gave her the money back, same scenario! I departed the store with the $46.64.
I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy one-get one free.' 'They're already buy-one-get-one-free,' she said, 'so I guess they're both free'. She handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.
One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when one of them shouted, 'Look at that dead bird!' Someone looked up at the sky and said, 'Where?'
While looking at a house, my brother asked the Real Estate agent which direction was north because , he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the North?' When my brother explained that the sun rises in the East, and has for some time, she shook her head and said, 'Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff'
I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open I told him, ' The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.' He responded, 'Is that Eastern or Pacific time?' Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, 'Uh, Pacific.'
My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.
My friends and I were on a beer run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount on both cases.
I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area, so I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, has your plane arrived yet?'
While working at a pizza parlor, I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. 'Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.'
Yep, They Walk Among Us!

They Walk Among Us,
and they Reproduce,
and Worst of all ..... they Vote!

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.
As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong? He replied, "It was an ID ten T error."
I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, "An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again."
Eric grinned.... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?"
"No," I replied. "Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out."
So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T
I used to like Eric...

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...
If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, 'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:
COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT
ABBOTT: Super Duper Computer Store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what? ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.
COSTELLO: I'm going to click YOUR blue 'w' if you don't start with some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!
(A few days later)
ABBOTT: Super Duper Computer Store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on 'START' ...

SILLY QUESTION OF THE WEEK

To the Top

June 10, 2008
Vancouver Aquarium
It's a Bouncing Baby Beluga!
Qila gave birth to her first calf at 4:28 PM Tuesday, June 10, 2008.
This newborn beluga is:
about 1.5 metres long and weighs more than 50 kilograms (at birth) slate grey -- it will gradually lighten as it matures wrinkled for the first few weeks adorable
Qila was born at the Aquarium on July 23, 1995, and is now a mom herself.
Her trainers are monitoring her and the newborn calf to give her calf the best chance for survival. Watch a video of Qila's ultrasound on our YouTube channel.
This is Qila's first calf and like any new mammal mom she is learning how to care for her baby. One of the first few milestones the veterinary staff will be looking for is bonding and nursing.
In preparation for the birth, two of the belugas (Imaq and Kavna) were moved to the Aquarium's research area behind the scenes.
The move gives Qila the space she needs to bond and nurse her calf. It also minimizes the distractions to her as she establishes a nursing pattern with her newborn calf.
Aurora, Qila's mom, will stay with her as a companion.
Imaq and Kavna will return to join Qila and her calf once the staff are certain that mom and calf are ready to widen their social circle. Imaq is the father of Qila's calf.

One of old beautiful Jack pines split in two places and fell on the roof our home. Today Monday June 9th several of the neighbors fellow came up and cut the branches off the tree to get it off the roof and then cut the tree down. We were very fortutate no one was hurt especially me as I was lying on the bed taking a nap when the 100 mile wind came through and took the tree down right over our bedroom.

Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
