WWWCOF Poetry Contest

- April was National Poetry Month. And, because many WWWCOF members are wonderful poets we held a WWWCOF Poetry Contest.

The goals were simple:

  • introduce to our members the pleasures of reading other member's poetry;
  • to reread some favorite poems.
  • to encourage us to try to write at least one poem;
  • to attend poetry readings in our community;
  • and to create a poetry book of our members' orginal poems.
The rules were simple as well -- Poems submitted for consideration must be your own original work!

The Poems could be viewed here

Interest and response was practically nonexisitent, however, one member did submit a vote, and the winner is:

FISHES AND TURTLES AND POLYWOGS TOO.
SAND PILES AND CRAYONS AND UNTIED SHOES.

A CUTE BUTTON NOSE, LIPS THAT CAN PUCKER,
ESPECIALLY BECAUSE, " THERE ARE NO MORE SUCKERS."

"I GOT IT FIRST!" TILL, "IT'S MY TURN NOW!
I'LL TELL ON YOU IF YOU DON'T SHOW ME HOW!"

BEAUTIFUL BLOND HAIR, AND DIRTY LITTLE HANDS,
"I CAN DO IT MYSELF, CAUSE I'M BIG NOW YOU KNOW!" YOUR EYES FILLED WITH TEARS. JUST A HUG YOU WILL NEED.
IT'S ALL BETTER NOW, IT WAS ONLY A FALL.

THESE THINGS SO PRECIOUS, TIME GOES TO FAST.
SOON YOU'LL BE A YOUNG LADY AT LAST.

NO DIRTY HANDS, NO TURTLES, YOU KNOW.
BUT TEARS FOR A HUG ALWAYS WILL SHOW!

JEANS AND TIED SHOES, MAKEUP A MUST!
A PIE YOU WILL MAKE, EVEN YOUR OWN CRUST.

YOUR CHILDREN YOU'LL SEE OUT OF A PARENTS EYES.
LOT'S OF LOVE, KINDNESS, AND THE BEST "MUDD PIES!"

LISTEN TO THEM, TIME GOES TOO FAST. YOU'RE SO PRECIOUS TO ME, ONLY YOU HAVE THAT PAST.

I LOVE YOU DEAR GRANDDAUGHTER, YOU ALWAYS WILL KNOW,
YOU'RE A SPECIAL PART OF MY LIFE, "ONLY YOU," CAN SHOW.

SO BACK TO YOUR STORIES, AND "MY TURN FIRST."

One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Jan's Ramblings

Last weekend I attended a Walk to Emmaus, as in meeting Jesus on the Road to Emmaus.
We didn't actually walk anywhere, it was held at a Christian Conference Centre on the coast in our area. Members of seven different denominations participated. Whilst it could be ordinary in that 15 different talks, to a set format, are given, with singing and Holy Communion, it is the love and care that is shown that makes this an overwhelming and awesome time. Anyone who has been, and would like to share with me about your experience, please email me.

Last weekend our annual local festival was held. We weren't here, but I have photos and notes from previously.

One of the important events in our town, Casino (population 10,000), is Beef Week, held in the last week of May. Whilst there are events all week, on the main day, Saturday, the beef cattle breeders bring their bulls (and other stock) to town, and display them along the main street.
Some of the competitions and displays are Miss Beef Week - judged on her knowledge of the cattle breed she is representing of course, the parade, poets breakfasts, free butchers breakfast in the street, vintage cars, whip cracking, county music, marching girls, pipe bands, line dancing or boot scooting, square dancing, historical displays, all free, a magnificent Orchid Show, craft shows and......ugh.. cow pat lotto.
On the Sunday, family day, there are dog trials, draught horses, damper, country music, pet show etc at the Showground. I commend the committee as they only charge $5 and concession $3 admission.

Hugs, Aussie Jan

Tips & Recommendations

A GREAT TIP FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.
This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.
It works if you park in your driveway or garage If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that.
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there...
This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime. This is the kind of e-mail I don't mind forwarding at all.
P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. It would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone.
A wife suggested to her husband to carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.

ASPCA SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK: FOREVER YOUNG

When Cindy Bateson of Grand Rapids, MI, contacted a local rescue organization, she couldn't resist the photos of an eight-year-old female mastiff with crooked teeth and a winning smile. Cindy and her family had reservations about adopting a dog in her twilight years, but this irresistible pooch was far from ready to "go gentle into that good night."

"Prissy is adorable!" Cindy exclaims, a year and a half later. "Her tongue sticks out when she's resting, and she sits with one leg up I guess she's too big and beefy to sit pretty."

Though she quickly adjusted to life with her new family, Prissy wasn't too interested in toys or playing with people. At the groomer's, however, she blossomed around other dogs and eventually became the salon's unofficial greeter.

The Batesons later adopted a nine-pound Chihuahua mix. Tito, as they named him, became Prissy's playmate and taught her to appreciate the finer things in life, like fluffy toys and a good romp.

"It's pretty hysterical to watch Prissy chase Tito around the house," says Cindy. "She's like a steam locomotive and Tito zips in circles around her."

So how'd Prissy get her amusing moniker? Cindy explains: "Her name was Puppy, but she didn't look like a Puppy; she had too much personality. So I asked my fiance to pick a name that sounded close to Puppy. He chose Prissy, and she took to it immediately."

Though Cindy initially had her doubts about her "big baby's" waning years, she wouldn't trade a day with Prissy, whose goofy grin and boundless love are truly ageless.

Hi Folks, now that summer and trips are in the making (if you can afford the gas that is) I thought this would be a valuable article to pass on for you and your pets.

KEEP VACATIONING PETS SAFE WITH OUR AIR & ROAD TRAVEL TIPS

Your summer vacation's almost here and for some pet parents, traveling's no fun if the four-legged members of the family can't come along. But without thoughtful preparation, going on the road or flying can be highly stressful, both for you and your animal companions. Before you embark on your journey, the ASPCA would like to offer a few helpful hints.

Please visit your veterinarian before traveling to make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and has all the medications he needs. Also ask about parasites or other health risks native to your destination. Your pet should always wear a collar and ID tag clearly stating an address or phone number where you can be reached that includes cell phone number and destination info.

Always bring plenty of plastic jugs filled with bottled or tap water from home. Drinking water she's not used to could upset your pet's stomach. If flying, freeze water in a bowl the night before. It won't spill during loading and it'll melt by the time she's thirsty. Fly your pet in a USDA-approved shipping crate large enough for her to comfortably stand, sit and turn around in. Write "Live Animal" in large letters on at least two sides of the crate, and draw arrows indicating the crate's upright position. (Of course you should ask the airline if small animals can fly with you in the cabin.)

If driving, never leave your pet in a parked automobile. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a stationary vehicle can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop.

To ensure your trip is a good one, please read our complete air and road travel tips. Wanna get off to a safe and stylish start? Check out the ASPCA's special line of travel gear for pets. Bon voyage!

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008

This week's brain teaser: Very difficult.
A man is accused of the murder of another man, but the judge thinks there isn't enough evidence to condemn him. So he decides the fairest way he can think of to resolve the situation. He decides to shut the man up in a room that has two doors, one that leads to instant freedom, the other to instant death. There are two guards, on at each door, only they know which door is which. One of the guards always tells the absolute truth the other always lies.
The prisoner is allowed to ask just one question to just one of the guards to guarantee his freedom
What is the question? Look for the answer elsewhere in the newsletter!!
With four months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.

Chinese Cooking Cooking is an art. The best way to win the heart of a friend is through their stomach. Family love grows stronger for you as they live on your good cooking and especially when the cooking is varied. Try and serve them a Chinese meal once in a while and watch the result.
Introduction:
Chinese chefs rely on judgment for their measurements. They have no thermometer to tell degrees of heat, no cup or spoon to measure quantity by, no clock to tell time. Their directions, translated as accurately as possible are herein set down simply for anybody to follow, it is hoped.
It is not necessary to have a great assortment of Chinese spices to cook Chinese dishes. Soy sauce is considered the most important item. The second important item is gourmet flavouring powder (MSG - monosodium glutamate) made of wheat and other vegetables.
As for Chinese groceries and vegetables, it is well to use them if you can get them. In Chinese cooking, there are three methods most commonly used – steaming, frying and boiling.
In steaming, all the liquid should be drained from the food and just enough stock added to cover the ingredients. Steam, as in a double boiler, until just soft, for at the point the food is most delicious. Before eating all the broth and oil sold be removed, and the food steamed again for a few minutes. A hot heat should be used in steaming.
In boiling, the heat should be sufficient to keep the food at the boiling point, but at no time should it boil vigorously.
Frying should be done over a very hot heat, and the foot should be turned constantly so that every particle will become evenly browned.
To obtain the best results in Chinese cooking, the food must be fresh, the flavoring must be right and the cutting of the meat and vegetables must be properly done. The tenderness, crispness or softness of the food is, of course, dependent upon the matter of timing and adjusting the heat of the flames. Also important are the consistency of the gravy, the proper size of the utensil, so that there will be ample room to stir the ingredients. Cooking in Chinese manner insures, to a great extent, that the vegetables are not over-cooked.
Most of the Chinese dishes are created by the combination of meats and vegetables, each borrowing the flavour from the other and lending back its own in return. Chinese dishes are not only economical and simple to cook, but also are time saving, delicious and nutritious.
Left-over Suggestions
In Chinese cooking, left-overs come handy. Do not throw them away. Use them to create Chinese dishes. Cooked meat of any kind is good to make fried rice, egg foo yung and chop suey dishes. For instance, a cup of left-over meat of any kind will make enough fried rice or egg foo yung for two or three dishes.
Note: You can always create some kind of Chinese meal with whatever cooking materials you have at home. If skillet is not large enough to do your cooking, use a large pot instead.

Our planet awareness site, Planet Kryzys has many interesting stories of different aspects of a planet under Crisis. Do please take a moment to visit it. Daphne from Argentina

PLANET KRYZYS, our Planet awareness site: has been updated with a novelty tree Jan of Australia, discovered on a walk. There are lots of interesting member notes in there
Bio fuels will clean the planet............of its poor.
It is becoming so evident, that there is no room for discussion. There is a direct relation between the rise in prices of food and the rise in demand for bio fuels.
The food crisis produced by the rocketing rise in price of basic foods around the world, will affect, in the coming years, in a frank and cruel way, more than 800 million people, mostly on the African continent, Asia, and the Caribbean, a large percentage of which will be children under 5.
The fact that the production of fuels of plant origin has entered as a competitor in the food production market, has drastically modified in record time, the quantity of the available offer in face of the constantly rising demand. Bio fuels are obtained from the same products and use the same land that is used to feed large part of the world population.
But this isn't all, because together with the price of grains and cereals, the price rises for the fodder for animals, and the value and use of spaces needed for the development, cause the rise in other basic products like meat, eggs and dairy produce.
In the last 8 year the quantity of corn destined for the production of ethanol in the USA alone has risen 500%. This means that in 2008 almost 100 million tons of corn alone, and in the US alone Hill be destined for fuel instead of feeding the people. During the last year the price of corn has risen 130%. The price of rice has shot from 300 dollars a ton to 1.200 dollars in the last few months.
About half the population of the planet survives on less than 2 dollars a day, and around a thousand million on less than a dollar a day. People for whom wheat, soy, rice and corn form the base of their food, and until the start of this food crisis counted for 75% of their income.
It is possible that in the next few years, it will not be possible to calculate these figures, as everyone will be trying to get food and water necessary for their own survival. The world food programme has warned that in the world reserves are at their lowest level in the last 30 years
Source: Ecoportal As if that isn"t all, there is the matter of over fishing in all the seas and oceans of the world. And please don't accuse me of pessimism. It is happening NOW
Alphalist There are an incredible number of useful articles there to help you get the best from your computer or put things right that aren't working too well. Perhaps you also know of some trick we could all use, so send it in and get it added.
The answer to the brain teaser is the question: The prisoner goes to any of one of the guards and asks "If I ask your companion which door leads to instant freedom, what would he say?" Whatever the guard says, he takes the opposite door. How? Let's suppose he asks the guard who tells the truth. The guard knowing his partner will lie and would name the wrong door, tells the truth (i.e. his partners lie) Imagine door A is freedom and door B is death. The liar will say B for freedom. The honest one , knowing that his companion will answer B, so he tells the truth. So the prisoner takes the opposite door. If on the other hand, he asked the liar the same question, the liar, knowing his mate would tell the truth, tells a lie and says B

The Back Church Pew

A pastor's wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the congregation and asked for a raise. After much discussion, they passed a rule that whenever the preacher's family expanded, so would his paycheck.
After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation Decided to hold another meeting to discuss the preacher's expanding salary. A great deal of yelling and inner bickering ensued, as to how much the clergyman's additional children were costing the church, and how much more it could potentially cost.
After listening to them for about an hour, the pastor rose from his chair and spoke, 'Children are a gift from God, and we will take as many gifts as He gives us. Silence fell on the congregation. In the back pew, a little old lady struggled to stand, and finally said in her frail voice, 'Rain is also a gift from God, but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers.'
The entire congregation said, 'Amen.'

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES

1. If you're choking on an ice cube simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself.
2. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold while you chop.
3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink.
4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.
5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

SILLY QUESTION OF THE WEEK

To the Top

"Canada is above all an idea of what a country could be, a place of imagination."

~ John Ralston Saul

This is a list of sure signs that you're in Canada.

Everything is labelled in English and French.
Everything is measured in metric. (No, the temperature does not drop fifty degrees when you cross the border, and the speed limit doesn't double.)
Milk comes in plastic bags as well as in cartons and jugs.
There's hockey gear everywhere. A guy can get onto a bus wearing goalie pads, a helmet -- everything but the skates -- and nobody gives him a second look.
Restaurants serve vinegar with French fries.
There are $1 and $2 coins. The paper currency is in different colors, and it's pretty.
The Trans-Canada Highway -- Canada's analogue to the US Interstates -- is two lanes wide for most of its length. (There are great big huge wide highways around the major cities. The 401 north of Toronto is sixteen lanes wide in places.)
There is still the occasional musical variety show on network TV, and such a show that was on until recently was hosted by a very, very large woman (Rita McNeil).
The CBC's evening news anchor is bald and doesn't wear a toupee.
When new coins are introduced to replace paper currency, people actually use the coins.
Contests run by anyone other than the government have "skill-testing questions" that winners must answer correctly before they can claim a prize. These are usually math problems, and are administered to get around the law that only the government can administer lotteries.
Lots of people run around in clothing from Roots.
The following gas stations are around (and don't exist in the US): Esso (instead of Exxon -- a visitor suggests "Esso" comes from the "S" and the "O" of Standard Oil)
Petro Canada
Irving (only in eastern Canada, and a visitor advises me that there's now at least one in Maine)
Canadian Tire
Husky
Mohawk (primarily in western Canada)

These are the biggest department stores:
The Bay (the Hudson's Bay Company, the oldest company in North America and possibly the world -- it was incorporated on May 2, 1670)
Eaton's (Toronto, Montral, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver are among the cities that have large malls called the Eaton Centre (Centre Eaton in French)). Eaton's has been having financial troubles for several years now, and finally closed a number of its stores and sold the rest to Sears Canada.
Zellers -- owned by the Bay, Zellers is similar to KMart (which recently pulled out of Canada) or Target (which isn't in Canada at all).
These are the big banks:
TD Canada trust
Bank of Montreal
Royal Bank
The Bank of Nova Scotia
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
The National Bank of Canada
The HongKong Bank of Canada
These banks are national and have branches all over the country. One sure sign you're in Canada: the federal government has blocked two big bank mergers (the TD wanted to merge with CIBC, and BMo wanted to merge with the Royal), ostensibly because reduced competition is bad for Canadians. Wow.
Credit unions are also popular in Canada, especially in Quebec, where they're called caisses populaires.

These are the most well-known Canadian restaurant chains: Harvey's -- fast food burger joint
Mr. Sub -- similar to Subway
The Keg (Le Keg en franais) -- a big, high-end yet still generic steakhouse
Pizza Pizza -- similar to Domino's
Tim Horton's -- do(ugh)nuts! See below.
Swiss Chalet -- sit-down chicken and ribs place
Robin's -- another do(ugh)nut chain, popular in western Canada.

The big mass-market beers are Molson and Labatt, and they're stronger than US beers. Molson Golden was recently reintroduced to the Canadian market, but I hardly ever see anyone drinking it -- I get the feeling Molson ships most of it to the States and tells the Americans it's good.

The major cigarette labels are Player's, Craven A, DuMaurier, Matinee, and Export A. Canadian cigarettes are milder than American ones.

Mountain Dew has no caffeine.

Coke and Pepsi use real sugar instead of corn syrup. Instead of seeing Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores, you see Coles and SmithBooks and Chapters and Indigo.

There are lots and lots of do(ugh)nut shops, especially ones called Tim Horton's (named after the hockey player who started the chain). (The number of Tim Horton's diminishes as you go further west, but I'm assured there are lots of them in Edmonton.)

When you step on someone's foot, he apologizes. (This really happened.)

There are billboards advertising vacations in Cuba, and Cuban cigars are freely available.

Nobody worries about losing a life's savings or a home because of illness.

In pharmacies, you can buy acetaminophen or ASA with codeine over the counter, but you can't buy hydrocortisone ointments or creams without a prescription.

When you go to the dentist to get a cavity filled (or worse), she or he puts a needle in your mouth first to "freeze" it. (Asking for Novocaine (a brand name) immediately pegs you as an American.)

At county fairs and the Canadian National Exhibition, red ribbons indicate first place and blue ribbons indicate second. (Canadians: it's the other way around in the States.)

Submitted by visitors:

Any conversation will inevitably include a brief discussion of the weather.

It's almost impossible to get a glass of iced tea in downtown Toronto. (This person must have been a Southerner -- in the US South, "iced tea" is unsweetened, and "sweet tea" has sugar. "Sweet tea" is what you get when you ask for "iced tea" in Toronto.)

Teenagers can drink legally. The drinking age in Quebec, Manitoba, and Alberta is 18; it's 19 in the rest of the country.

Potato chips come in flavo(u)rs such as salt and vinegar, ketchup, and "all dressed" (a collection of just about all possible seasonings -- the person who suggested this one liked it to a "suicide slush" in the States).

There are "chip vans" (aka "chip trucks" or "chip wagons"). These are like the van driven by the ice cream man, only they sell French fries. They are most ubiquitous on the roads to "cottage country." (A visitor from British Columbia noted that "chip trucks" don't sell French fries in BC; they drive on logging roads and carry wood chips there.)

Every weekend during the summer, southern Ontarians go in droves from Toronto and its environs to their second homes (ranging from campers to great big houses with all the amenities) in cottage country (usually Muskoka -- I'm told that calling it "the Muskokas" marks you as an outsider).

Every weekend during the summer, southern Quebecers go in droves from Montral and its environs to their cottage country (usually the Laurentians; the Eastern Townships; Burlington, Vermont; Lake Champlain, New York; or Plattsburgh, New York).

Every weekend during the winter, the cottage country people go back to cottage country to go snowmobiling. Gas stations are just as likely to be filling snowmobiles as cars or trucks.

Cars (especially on the Prairies) have electrical plugs sticking out from under the hoods. These are for block heaters, to prevent engines from freezing when it's -40. People give distances in times, not miles.

People ask whether you'd like "a coffee" rather than "some coffee."

Canadians tend to use British spelling. They write about "colour," "cheques," "theatres," and so forth. Most use the American "-ize" rather than the British "-ise" verb ending, however.

People drive with their headlights on during the day. Since 1989, all new cars have had to be fitted with daytime running lights.

In Ontario, you can buy beer only at the Beer Store (formerly known as "Brewers' Retail"). The experience of going into a beer store is documented nicely in the 1983 film Strange Brew.

Movie theatres have one night a week, usually Monday or Tuesday, where they charge matinee prices.

There is no mail delivered on Saturdays.

"Lieutenant" is pronounced "leftenant."

Mortgage interest is not tax-deductible. The interest rate on most mortgages is not fixed, but rather, is renewed at the end of a term which can be as short as six months or as long as seven years.

Most Canadians will tell you that the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced "zed." Sharon, Lois, and Bram, popular children's entertainers, make it a point in their performances of "The Alphabet Song" to say "zed" instead of "zee." People end sentences with "eh," eh?

days until Reunion 2008!

Welcome to Charla, from Florida, USA's World

"Linder's REDNECK Country Village"

Well Dad (Charlie) decided he wanted a cook out for Memorial Day. Have you ever tried to explain to an OLDER SENIOR CITIZEN that man changes the dates of special days to suit themselves? My dear Father decides Memorial Day is and always has been and always will be...May 30! He starts to invite people and says it is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. He leaves me in charge and I am telling him it is too late to invite people for a cookout now for Memorial day. They all have plans. Well I finally got through to him that the weekend of May 23, 2008, is now Memorial weekend. Of course he insists that is the wrong thing to do.

Well after a few phone calls to him and continued explanation he accepts the date change. So we decided to have it Sunday June 1, 2008. He is very pleased because that is in fact the right weekend! Poor Mom was in a whirl as she was told by Dad it was one Sunday and me another, Dad told her one time and not realizing some of our guests were coming from Orlando and even Sebring...4 hours away! Mom must have been on the phone to my other brother and sister a million times( exaggerated). Finally Mom & I got it together with the help of Jeanie. What started out to be a simple cookout turned into a load of guests and a Wonderful Day. Our menu was: BBQ Ribs and hot dogs on the grill, Homemade potato salad, homemade coleslaw, Baked beans, deviled eggs, corn on the cob, macaroni salad, watermelon slices, banana cream and chocolate cream pies, Mom's Yummy "BETTER THAN SEX" (yes you read it right) dessert. Soda, cola, and ice tea.

We ended up with 27 people! It was wonderful. Dad was such a happy camper. We all got to meet Dad's great granddaughter Shelly, after 11 years of none of us seeing her! My niece Jeanie, Shelly's aunt found her and invited Shelly and her Dad. They came and oh what a beauty she is! Of course lot's of "HAPPY" tears and hugs and questions and just not enough time. So we plan to do it again for Dad's birthday which is June 24th. Just wanted to share our "REAL Memorial Day" with you. Oh...the "Linder's Redneck Village" Pictures following will explain that!

Love
Charla & FlMarie

Shelly Dad's Great Granddaughter we haven't seen in years.

Shelly and her Aunt Jeanie who is responsible for our meeting Shelly.

Health Matters
on the "lighter" side

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50:

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

I need this back... If you'll do this for me... I'll do it for you......

When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need.
Take 60 seconds and give this a shot! All you do is simply say the following small prayer for the person who sent you this.

Father,
God bless all my friends and loved ones in whatever it is that You know they may be needing this day! And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity and power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you. Amen.

Then send it on to five other people
. Within hours you caused a multitude of people to pray for other people. Then sit back and watch the power of God work in your life.

P. S. Five is good, but more is better.

Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
