One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Jan's Ramblings

Whale watching season kicks off in the south of NSW from mid-May and lasts until around September through to November when the whales, with their newborns, return to their feeding grounds at the South Pole.

Whale watching is now one of the fastest growing tourism activities in the country. Many take a trip in a whale watching boat, others just sit on a headland and see them from there. Amazingly, there are 43 species that travel through Australian waters.

Humpbacks and southern right whales are the most common along the east coast, although orcas – or killer whales – and the rare all-white whale called Migaloo have also been sighted.

Interestingly, humpbacks and southern rights follow a similar route each year. Renowned for their spectacular ocean antics, humpbacks will leap out of the water, roll in the air with their huge fins outstretched like wings and crash noisily back into the ocean.

Measuring 14–18 metres at maturity and weighing up to 50 tonnes, humpbacks can be easy to see due to their active behaviour.

Tips & Recommendations

For the Ladies

Pat I know we have read most of these but a good idea to review.
Lindalou

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or loved one's life

Crucial

Because of recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation... This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know. After reading these 9 crucial tips , forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

  • 1 . Tip from Tae Kwon Do : The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
  • 2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM . Toss it away from you.... chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
  • 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk o a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
  • 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR , LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it . As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

  • 5 . A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
    • A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat
    • B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door . Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
    • C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side.. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
  • 6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
  • 7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!
  • 8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle/ o r with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
  • 9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby ---- This e-mail should probably be taken seriouslybecause the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America 's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana

PATCHES
RUTH HOKANSON'S NEW BABY

(and it's not a Sheltie)

Stolen by: me....
Ruth I loved this story about your new kitten, and just had to use it for the pet of the week...
Hope you didnt mind. So without further ado folks read this wonderful story.

Hello everyone I been so busy this whole month and so far and I think I am finally getting some down time. First welcome Robyn to the circle. You will certainly enjoy all the friends you will meet along the way in this wonderful group. My name is Ruth, I am from Michigan, I am married 37 years to George, no children but Mama Ruth to lots of critters. I have six dogs at the moment 4 of my own and two fosters. I have a two cats. Pictures are of my new kitten Patches who a hoot.

I been really busy this last week getting things ready for the Women's Club I belong too. I help set up and work our bake sale on Saturday, and not only was that going on in our home town Hastings but we had the annual Thornapple Garden Tour and annual Book Sale for the Hastings Public Library this weekend so a lot of things going all at once. I was in at 8:00 and never got home till 8:00 so I was really exhuasted. Patches came into our family on Saturday while I was sitting at the Garden Tour booth a family was giving away free kittens and I saw Patches and thought I been wanting another kitty since I lost my Jezz and as you can guess Patches got a new home with us. So far we are doing great and he seem not mine the dogs much.

Yesterday Sunday a lady from Ann Arbor came to see and Precious and she adopted her and so Precious will be leaving next weekend. Spirit had her first heart worm shot last Friday and came through with flying color now if she can come through the next two we will be home free. Spirit came to us with bad case of heartworms and we are treating her for this before she can be adopted. Well can't think of much more but certainly miss my chats with everyone. May every one have a great week.

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.

He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar: 'I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.'

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: 'He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 - he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?'

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

Argentina Report

No, I didn't sent anything in this week. We had abit of a "distraction" or "crisis" for want of a better word over the last weekend. My son Ruben had been told Thursday he was to travel to the USA Saturday to sort out a problem with something supplied by his place of work. He has the advantage of having dual nationality, so by using his British passport he would not have needed a visa. But on checking in at the Buenos Aires international airport, he was told he could not travel on that passport because for the States they now have to have a machine readable bar-code... something introduced this year I think. So he tried with his Argentine passport, but for that he needs the visa. He changed his flight for Wednesday night, and I had to drop everything and get together any possible papers and documents he might need to visit the British Embassy, Monday morning, and take them to him. First thing Monday morning we were at the British Embassy before they opened. We explained the situation, but they said, all he could do was renew his passport, or apply at the American Embassy for a visa. He decided to do both, as his British passport runs out at the end of this year anyway. They said, no way could his passport be ready in under a week, and the US Embassy told him he'd have to wait a minimum of three days before the visa was authorized.

I came back Monday afternoon, when there was nothing more I could do to help him on his way, he hung on there waiting to see what would happen. Wednesday afternoon his company authorized him to put the flight on hold and return to this city. While he was in the bus back home (5 and 1/2 hour trip)he got a call from the British Embassy saying due to the need, they had got his passport through in time!!!!

Anyway he felt a bit disinflated about the whole thing, especially as a few months ago he had had the opportunity for a trip to Mexico to promote his communications company, but in that case travelling as an Argentina ( not as a Brit) would have meant no need for a visa. His Argentine passport was then in the process of being renewed, and didnt come, and didnt come!

And to think a brief trip to Peru had been cancelled because the "emergency" had come up in Kentucky.

This could be a warning to anyone else anywhere who wants to travel to the States. They told us in the British Embassy that he could have gone to other places on his older passport, it is just USA that demand the new system. Ruben isn't going just right now. He'll be already next time though! So well, having been distracted by all that, I haven't produced anything for the Global.

It doesn't matter how old our kids are, when they have a problem, we feel it with them, don't you agree? Take care, Daphne

The Humble PARSLEY
Homemade Remedies with Parsley.

Arthitis: three of four cups of Parsley tea a day is the most advisable.

  • Shiny Hair: Boil a handful of parsley in a little water. Leave to cool, and use as a rinse after shampooing. You'll get a beautiful shine.
  • An Appetite Stimulator: drink a cup of parsley tea before supper.
  • Acne and other skin infections: Apply a parsey compress directly to the affected part and then cover with gauze. Keep the gauze damp with hot water.
  • Indigestion: Chew on a couple of fresh parsley stalks.
  • Or drink a cup of dried parsley in water. Or make an infusion of concentrated parsley, putting two cupfuls of parsely in a litre of water.
  • Bad breath: Parsley is the only known way of removing the smell of garlic from your breath. It also neutralizes the smell of onions, tabacco and almost all other causes of bad breath.
  • Insect bites and stings: chop up and crushin a glass or porcelain container, ( do not use metal as this produces an undesirable chemical reaction) Apply the paste directly to the bite or sting.
  • Urinary Problems: drink several cups of parsley tea a day until the symptoms disappear. Parsley acts as a laxative helping eliminate excess liquids, and form an excellent kidney tonic.
  • Cough: Drink a litre of parsley tea a day. The high vitamin "C" content also helps cure colds.

    Fun

5 reasons not to mess with children.

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah' The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?' The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him '

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.' The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.' Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied,
    'They will in a minute.'

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to 'honor' thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?' Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture 'Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, 'And there's the teacher, she's dead.'

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.' 'Yes,' the class said 'Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?' A little fellow shouted, 'Cause your feet ain't empty.'

    RAINBOWS

I'm sure you all know that a "rainbow" is light refracted through millions of droplets of water but did you know that a rainbow is really a spectacular light show? A typical rainbow is sunlight spread out into its spectrum of colours and diverted to the observer through those water droplets.

The "bow" of the rainbow is actually a group of nearly circular arcs of colour all having a common center and the angle of light refraction to create a rainbow is between 40 and 42 degrees to the eye of the observer?

It was Sir Isaac Newton who discovered the seven distinct colours of a rainbow's spectrum... red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Interestingly, a rainbow and radio waves are made from exactly the same thing, the energy of photons found within electromagnetic radiation, but they vibrate at different frequencies.

Perhaps you've never noticed this but in order to see a rainbow, the sun is always behind you and the center of the circular arc of the rainbow is in the direction opposite to that of the sun, while the rain, of course, is in the direction of the rainbow.

For more fascinating information on rainbows go to: Rainbows

where you'll find out that even the moon can create rainbows. Merrie

    Managing Your Stress Levels
Top 10 Real-Life Ways to Take Charge of Your Stress

So, what's the most effective route to managing stress? Here are some tips to help you take charge of your life and reduce your level of stress:
Develop good coping strategies to use when you feel stressed - and practice using them when you're feeling calm so you can call on them when your stress level rises. Learn relaxation techniques, practice meditation, and engage in a pleasurable physical activity. These methods all help to counter the stress response in the body. If you can't learn them on your own, sign up for a course on stress management or specifically on relaxation techniques. (Note: These are not "new age" techniques - they have been proven to reduce stress.) If you currently use harmful coping mechanisms, like drinking, smoking, or overeating when stressed, commit to breaking those habits, and get help if necessary. Join a support group focused on your issue. Remember the "serenity prayer" and decide what you can and cannot change - then take actions to change the things you can. Try to jettison any stress you feel about things you have no control over.

If you are worrying about a particular issue or problem, develop a plan of action to deal with it. And if someone can help guide you or give you input to help you make decisions or a plan of action, seek out his or her assistance. It may sound silly, but write down your plan, or make a contract with yourself about what actions you will or won't take - and hold yourself to it!

Practice having a positive attitude. Attitude matters - you can view the glass as half full or half empty, and it makes a tremendous difference. Practice gratitude as well. It will focus your attention on the positive things in your life and help you see opportunities and solutions. Work on developing a resilient personality. Resilience is characterized by five traits:

    • 1. Insight - know yourself and accept the truth.
    • 2. Adaptability - respond in creative and imaginative ways.
    • 3. Responsibility - don't bother with blaming others or wait for someone else to fix your problem.
    • 4. Commitment - engage with the reality of life and commit to personal growth.
    • 5. Connection - communicate with openness and clarity.

Keep a journal and write down your concerns and worries, and then leave them there, especially before you go to bed at night. Studies have shown that keeping a journal reduces stress levels and helps people put their lives into perspective.

Have more fun, and develop your sense of humor. Seek out pleasurable activities and events, and watch more comedy. Laugher is good medicine.

Carve out personal time every day, and indulge yourself with things that bring you pleasure: a hot bath, dark chocolate, a good book, or music.

Establish a strong support system among family and friends and seek them out when you need emotional support or guidance about problem solving.

Whatever your problems are, or whatever you are struggling with, know there are people around you who can help. If you are overwhelmed with stress and feel you can't see a way out, or you're struggling with chronic anxiety or depression, you should think about seeking help from a professional, if you haven't done so already. There's no need to go it alone. Good help and successful treatment is available.

Here is a new way to look at a deck of cards!!

    Deck of Cards

It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard.
The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week.
As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk.

Just then an army sergeant came in and said, 'Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?'
The soldier replied, 'I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord.'
The sergeant said, 'Looks to me like you're going to play cards.'
The soldier said, 'No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards.'

The sergeant asked in disbelief, 'How will you do that?'
'You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.
The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments.
The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.
The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The Five is for the five virgins there were ten but only five of them were glorified.
The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.
The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.
The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives -- the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth.
The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him.
The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.
The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.
The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary.
The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings.
When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year.
There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week - 52 weeks in a year.
The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Each suit has thirteen cards -- there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.

So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for.'

The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, 'Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?'

Please let this be a reminder and take time to pray for all of our soldiers who are being sent away, putting their lives on the line fighting.

    RED SHIRT

If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for a man...

Last week, while traveling to Toronto on business, I noticed an army sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
    'No', he responded.
    'Heading out', I asked?
'No. I'm escorting a soldier home.'
    'Going to pick him up?'
'No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Afghanistan; I'm taking him home to his family.'

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honour for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, 'Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.'
Upon landing in Toronto, the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
'Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honour of having Sergeant Steeley of the Canadian Armed Forces join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign.'

Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be a Canadian.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.

    Red Fridays.

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Canadians who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority.' We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Canadians, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Canadians supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every red-blooded Canadian who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make Canada on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming Hockey game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the Canada is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is 'We need your support and your prayers.' Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

    Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
