BigSisPat's Journal

Journal July 18

Last week I was ranting about government bureaucracy, and bemoaning my life in general. Shortly after the newsletter, much of that changed.

But, before I get into that I would like to reiterate the power of prayer. I know we pray every week, for our family and friends, the military and so forth, through Charla’s Prayer Request. But how many of you pray in your everyday lives, for yourself.

I have learned that God does listen. It may seem that he gives us many tests, much more than we think we can handle. And when we pray it seems that he doesn’t answer and we get discouraged. The discouragement is just another test. And what we must do is pray to God to turn that discouragement into patience.

That’s what I did. After venting to you all last week, I realized that God would answer my prayers in due time, but I had to have patience. And guess what, it worked!

Seriously!!!

Here is how it all came about. The manager here at Twin Gables, quit on Canada Day, July 1st.

The owner’s wife came by to collect some rents and talk to everyone. She was only going to be here for the day, so I volunteered to kind of look after things for them until they returned the following week. Then she gave me the nicest compliment. She said you have to trust people, even though sometimes that trust doesn’t always pan out. Then she said, but I have a good feeling about you.

Last weekend, the owner came and we discussed some things. The next day he took me for breakfast where we talked in more detail about managing the property.

To make a long story short, I have been given the job of managing this place, with limited duties. He wants to work with me for a couple of months to make sure everything will work out.

I will be given some remuneration, but for me the best thing is, I don’t have to wait to move out of my one room!

At the end of the month (only about two weeks) I will be moving across the way into a one bedroom unit.

I know it is a 24/7 job, and will entail quite a bit of physical; work (cleaning units and so forth). But I now feel like I have a purpose to my live. I get up each morning, knowing I have things to do.

So there you have it. God does answer your prayers. But you must learn patience.

Till next time,

BigSisPat & Max

One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Pope at World Youth Day in Australia

July 17, 2008 04:48pm

An estimated crowd of some 150,000 pilgrims from more than 170 nations greeted gave the 81-year-old Pope at World Youth Day in Australia today. He shook a few lucky pilgrims' hands as he disembarked from the MV Sydney 2000, before climbing into the popemobile. Pilgrims, priests and nuns waved flags, shouted and took photos as the Pope was carried through the crowd. After the speeches and formalities, the Pope drove through the streets in the Popemobile. It was estimated 500,000 saw the Pope today. There were some great pics on the TV news of the crowds of young people, but they aren't on the internet as yet.

Thank you Charla for sending in this adorable story about your Brother and his critters. The pictures speak 1,000 words........ They are all so healthy looking. Your Brother is a Gem to have so many, and you can tell he loves them all...

"My Brother's Animals"

Most of you know about my brother Kirk. (FlMarie's Son) Last year he delivered a neighbors baby on his couch only days after he had neck surgery. He was was still in his neck brace, although managed to help this little one come into the world. Since then Kirk has acquired quite a family of his own:

Kirk has a big heart for animals. He started out with a few cats and then a horse and then another horse and a couple chickens and a miniature pony and now a couple turkeys. Indeed he is the neighborhood "FOREST VIEW HILLBILLIES," of Florida. Kirk gets Turkey eggs and shares them with whomever wants them. Boy Turkey eggs are HUGE! Ever ate one? They taste good too, especially as long as you don't know you're eating them. Aunt Peachy put them in corn bread and I couldn't figure why her cornbread was so wonderful? Same kind I use, same ingredients only she used "turkey eggs." I just can't bring myself to eat them knowingly but Kirk does. Mom & I want to share Kirk's family with you and his newest member "SUNDANCE." Hope you enjoy.

Argentina Report

The Glaciar Perito Moreno
The Glacier Perito Moreno is one of the Patagonia attractions most visited, calling people from all over the World in the hope of seeing this impressive glacier that measures 5 kilometres in its front and 60 metres high, above the level of the lake.

It advances at a rate of 100 metres a year and separates two lakes; Argentino and Rico. Due to the blockage, there are three meters difference in the level of them.
Due to its continual movement, it causes to accumulation, loosening up and breaking of huge blocks of ice. This show used to occur about every four year towards the end of summer or beginning of fall (March April) but this year it is happening in full winter. Many tourists spend hours before this eighth marvel of the world waiting, hoping for the blocks to breakaway and fall, amid shouts of glee and applauses.

Very few stop to wonder Why is it happening ever more frequently and even in mid winter!! I have never been there, mainly due to the prohibitive costs of excursions there and accommodation once there. But I will have to go.. while we still have a glacier!
This marvel is found in the southern province of Santa Cruz, in the tourist village of El Calefate, on parallel 50
Our Independence Day activities (9th July) consisted of us getting up early to prepare 15 pasties for a lunch party. Then in the evening we attended a show for the anniversary of our sister group of dances. It was lovely!

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008

NOTE FROM OUR PROPOSED REUNION HOSTESS There has been a curious lack of support about Reunion 2008 in Argentina, as much in those interested in coming as in help in any way.
I would like to give my opinion on the situation in Argentina at this present moment. Perhaps you have heard of some of the conflicts this country suffers. If nothing else it does proof that the people still have the right to protest!! The latest problem causing certain unrest that maybe you have heard of is the farm producers vs. the government and has been going on for some 4 months now. Basically it is due to the fact the Gov. wants to raise tax on farm produce to 44%, thus leaving very little margin for rising costs, machinery, fuel, farm workers. The farm producers retaliated but cutting routes around the country especially those that go to bordering countries like Uruguay (exports), and so holding up products like dairy, cereals, fruit, veg and meat - everything farms produce. Well we have had shortages due to these route cuts, the biggest being that fuel tankers were also caught up in the blocks and could not deliver to the service stations. This was notable during our recent holiday, but has now been resolved.
I only hope that none of this is the reason why people are not signing up for Reunion. It has not affected us personally too much, and I cannot see how it can affect visitors who come briefly to this country, which apart from not having who can run it adequately, is a beautiful country, with varied interests, climates and landscapes and has so much to offer the visitor.
With three months to go before Reunion 2008, Sharon has made positive moves to be here. Who else is going to be brave enough to come?? Those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.

If it wasn't for last minute nothing would ever get done!!! Please let us know real soon

Who are we going to add to this group for reunion 2008 The inscription form to take part in this unforgettable event can be found here: Inscription Form Look forward to getting lots of them!!

The Humble PARSLEY
Homemade Remedies with Parsley.

Arthitis: three of four cups of Parsley tea a day is the most advisable.
Shiny Hair: Boil a handful of parsley in a little water. Leave to cool, and use as a rinse after shampooing. Youll get a beautiful shine.
An Appetite Stimulator: drink a cup of parsley tea before supper.
Acne and other skin infections: Apply a parsey compress directly to the affected part and then cover with gauze. Keep the gauze damp with hot water.
Indigestion: Chew on a couple of fresh parsley stalks. Or drink a cup of dried parsley in water. Or make an infusion of concentrated parsley, putting two cupfuls of parsely in a litre of water.
Bad breath: Parsley is the only known way of removing the smell of garlic from your breath. It also neutralizes the smell of onions, tabacco and almost all other causes of bad breath.

ADDICTION A REAL DISEASE!

I spent the day with my daughter Jonna yesterday Friday July 11,2008 and I learned so much. We talked very openly and she held nothing back and did not ask for me to feel sorry for her because she doesn't feel that is an answer to anything. During our day I was quite shocked that the things we see on TV are REAL! I always knew it was, although it was so easy to dismiss it as "BEING ON TV," and let it go.

I learned addiction is in fact a real disease. It is treated as though the person can JUST STOP anytime they want. This is true to a point although they do need help and they do have to truly want to stop. They will be drug addicted all their lives however they can control it with the support they seek.

My Daughter being an Addict:

She took me by a place in a park on the inlet in Daytona where they have picnic tables and gazebos. A very pretty place. Jonna, (my daughter), told me looks are deceiving, and for me to stay close to her. As we got closer to the Pavilion with the picnic tables, I began to hear loud talking. There were 7 African American men and one Caucasian woman just hanging out. The woman was drunk very drunk. She was homeless you could tell by the back pack she had on and the words she was saying about cleaning up in the restroom there. She started arguing with one of the men. Jonna started to say something and I stopped her. I wanted to see how this part of our human race lives.

The woman and man began to shout and the woman got in the mans face. Another man got between them to stop it and said it wasn't worth arguing. The woman continued to try to get in the mans face with her fists clenched. She continued to be mad and cussing and wanting to fight. She kept saying what's wrong you don't want to hit a homeless WHITE woman? The language was worse, as they say, than a truck driver. Jonna finally told them "HEY MAN! MY MOMMA IS SITTING HERE PLEASE WATCH YOUR MOUTH.!" I felt NO FEAR! I just sat there and and they kept saying hey I'm sorry. Tell you Momma I'm sorry. Another guy walked over to the woman and put his arm around her & gave her a kiss on the cheek & said come on go for a walk. She kept saying everyone thinks I'm drunk. They walked on down the street him holding her as she could barely stand.

Jonna asked if I would allow her to show me her world. I said yes I would very much like to see what it is about. She warned me what I was about to see was indeed REAL and not a pretty sight. I said I want to see. She drove me to a neighborhood and down a street where children were riding bicycles. These children were around 5-8 years of age. It was right through the ghetto of Daytona where the drugs are being dealt in front of you. I felt as though I was watching a movie on TV. It was like a flea market where men were standing everywhere selling whatever your choice of drug was. Some of these guys were very young teens and some very old men. I actually witnessed making drug deals. What I thought was some kind of brotherhood hug I have seen many times between guys on the street and in parking lots were actually the passing of the drugs and money. These people don't appear to be a bit scared when you Drive down the street nor do they seem to care. Some are wearing their pants down to their knees and wearing gold everywhere and some need a good bath and fed. NO certain race. There were white, black and tan! Just so much to take in! Cars would stop and get their drugs and Drive off and another come along. Some would merely walk up make the deal and keep walking.

Then Jonna said now let me show you what this leads to. She drove me to another area close by where Prostitutes are actually selling themselves! I saw how they were dressed and how they looked so sad and high and just pitiful. It broke my heart. They would yell out at the cars going by, advertising they were for sell. They would yell what their specialty was!

One car with a scraggly man stopped and one of the girls got in and off they went. There were teenage girls dressed with almost everything showing standing on corners and looking like they were so high. Some appeared to be in their 20's and then I saw a couple very skinny and very pitiful in their 40's. I remember a young woman had dark circles under her eyes and she just looked as if she was pleading for help. Her hair matted somewhat and she just looked so tired. Jonna said she was probably coming down and was "jones-ing" meaning starting to withdrawl. This is when they feel so useless and such. They are panicking to find another fix.

She kept driving in the same neighborhood down other streets. As we kept going Jonna told me to look and watch.

There were so many men & women and a few children and she said all of them are HOMELESS! Sitting on the ground, the sidewalks, just standing, some collecting cigarette butts from the street. A pregnant young woman sitting leaned against a tree. Then a couple children just sitting and actually looking like the TV showing the children in other countries. Their little eyes so without feeling. I was speechless with a huge lump in my throat. She said the beginning of this is the first place I took you and then to the drug street to make your deal. Then you have to do whatever to get your next fix and you become homeless. The only thing on your mind is where is your next drug coming from. She said it's like you are over powered by something you can't control no matter how much you want to stop or how much you know you are hurting your loved ones. After a while you just want to die because that is the only way you feel you can get rid of it.

She said come, go to a meeting with me and meet the real people with my disease. She was referring to all these people I had seen thus far. I said ok. We went and there were many men & women of all ages and walks of life. Some very poor possibly homeless, there were some dressed like an executive or secretary. Then there were the Mother's and Father's, in their late 20's and early 30's. A couple men in their 60's or so. I sat and observed and listened. I could not control my tears for these people. It was as if I was in a group of people who have cancer and only we can know how we feel.

NO one can know unless they have it. Only these people all have the disease of addiction. It is a real disease in the Neuro part of the brain known as the "pleasure pathway". Each and every one of these people was an addict at birth just as if they were born with diabetes or something. They are very open in this room about themselves always beginning by saying their name followed by "and I'm an addict." In having respect for them I won't go into detail, but I can say I see them now in a whole different light. Please do not get me wrong. In NO WAY do I condone any addiction however I do now understand how it can happen. Thank you to Our LORD JESUS for allowing my daughter to give me this day.

Addiction Recovery

Charla

I want to add to the above. To those of you who do not know me and my daughter very well. She is an addict, she has been for years just as my two sons. She overdosed two weeks ago and I almost lost her. Through the Grace of God she lived and is now in a place where she can get the help she now is asking for. I live in a room surrounded by cement walls with no windows to these 3 children of mine. I don't let this wall down because It always falls in on me so I stay on guard. Although as a Mother I want to believe this is the time she will change and make it. I have put her and my sons in God's Hands and His Will be done. Without Him I couldn't even begin to handle this.

Common Expressions

Fight fire with fire

Meaning

Respond to an attack by using a similar method as one's attacker.

Origin

When we 'fight fire with fire' we are likely to employ more extreme methods than we would normally do. That was also the case with the actual fire-fighting that was the source of this phrase. US settlers in the 19th century, who originated the phrase, attempted to guard against grass or forest fires by deliberately raising small controllable fires, which they called 'back-fires', to remove any flammable material in advance of a larger fire and so deprive it of fuel. This literal 'fighting fire with fire' was often successful, although the settlers' lack of effective fire control equipment meant that their own fires occasionally got out of control and made matters worse rather than better. One such failure was recorded in Caroline Kirkland's novel, based on her experiences of frontier Michigan in the 1840s, A New Home - Who'll Follow? Or, Glimpses of Western Life (written under the pseudonym of Mrs. Mary Clavers):

The more experienced of the neighbours declared there was nothing now but to make a "back-fire!" So home-ward all ran, and set about kindling an opposing serpent which should "swallow up the rest;" but it proved too late. The flames only reached our stable and haystacks the sooner,

The method has continued to be used however and foresters now routinely create roads or unplanted areas to act as fire-breaks in woodland that is at risk of fire.

The term 'backfire' is now more often applied to plans that fail in a way that weren't intended. It wasn't used in that negative sense until the early 20th century and probably derives from the popping explosions that used to be commonly heard from the exhausts of faulty motor vehicles, not from forest 'back-fires' which ran out of control.

The earliest usage of 'fight fire with fire' that I've found in print is in the US author Henry Tappan's 1852 reminiscence A Step from the New World to the Old, and Back Again:

Smoking was universal among the men; generally cigars, not fine Havanas, but made of Dutch tobacco, and to me not very agreeable. I had some Havanas with me, and so I lighted one to make an atmosphere for myself: as the trappers on the prairies fight fire with fire, so I fought tobacco with tobacco.

Lightning

There is nothing more beautiful or more ominous than a thunderstorm. The power it unleashes is awesome and the lightning contained within the storm has often been thought to be from supernatural origins. Lightning is responsible for hundreds of of deaths per year, as well as millions of dollars of damage be it to buildings, communication systems, and livestock, to say nothing of the many forest fires sparked by lightning hits.

So why, you may ask is lightning necessary in the first place?

Well, to begin with, it not only tells us about the electrical aspects of the atmosphere, it also tells us about a storm's life cycle but even more importantly, the absence of lightning would result in a very speedy and complete destruction of life on this planet. It would take less than an hour for the earth to lose all of its negative electrical charge that enables it to convert atmospheric nitrogen into earth useful nitrogen that almost all plants require. Without plants, there would be no animal life.

Perhaps what is most remarkable is the repetitive amount of lightning required to do this work. Lightning strikes the earth one hundred times per SECOND, more than eight and a half million times per year. It heats nearby air to about 18,000 degrees F and it's this heating that creates the shock wave that we call thunder.

Please take a moment after you read this and say a prayer for all military and their families everywhere. This is a photo of Sharon's (Greene) Stannard's Father. So many times when we hear about our Military and what they are doing to keep us free, we tend to forget the enlisted ones before them. Even though those wars have been fought and won we would not have won without these kind and giving men and women. They gave their lives to the devotion of freedom for their people.

Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
