Quebec's 400th Anniversary

During the golden summer of 1908, Canadians celebrated the 300th anniversary of the founding of Quèbec with a public spectacle rarely rivaled for scale or theatricality since. Then, as now, there were those who wanted to conflate the founding of Quèbec with the birth of Canada. Controversy raged over who should be in charge and what should be celebrated. Indecisiveness, conflicting political agendas and confusion hampered planning, and everything had to be improvised at the last moment.

Ceremonies at the base of the Champlain Monument during Quebec's Tercentenary celebrations, 23 July 1908 (courtesy Library and Archives Canada / PA-023829).

But it all came off in a dazzling display of parades, pageantry, royalty, solemn masses, fireworks and illuminations, music, marching and cavalry charges, with a truly awesome fleet of British, French and US warships massed in the St Lawrence River, near where Samuel de Champlain first came ashore to set up a fort and trading post. But when the warships weighed anchor, the tourists decamped, the streets were swept, the tattered decorations taken down, and the souvenirs packed away, the Tercentenary was just as quickly forgotten.
What should we make of anniversary celebrations such as these? Quèbec's 400th will be followed by BC's 150th - and was preceded by Newfoundland's 500th. Ostensibly, these events are about history, but only rarely are they historical. According to the advertised programme, Quèbec will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its founding with fireworks displays, a carnival, son et lumiere on the side of a grain elevator and the inevitable performances by Céline Dion and Cirque de Soleil. Aside from a happening on the Plains of Abraham, history will be kept as far offstage as possible.
That is in marked contrast to the 300th anniversary in 1908. On that occasion, history was front and centre. Apart from the obligatory fireworks and concerts, the main event was a grand historical pageant staged in an open-air theatre before thousands of spectators on the Plains of Abraham. Hundreds of Quèbec citizens donned period costumes and acted out scenes of their past accompanied by an orchestra, two massed armies on the field and the guns of the fleet thundering on the river below. Native people from an adjoining encampment starred in the pageant and, during a reenactment of Champlain's arrival on the Don de Dieu, they greeted him in their canoes and accompanied him ashore. After these performances, as the producers intended, the colourfully costumed spilled out of the stadium onto the streets of Quèbec as the cast mingled with family and friends in contemporary summer attire. Past and present flowed together and reflected back on one another.
But what historical narrative was being celebrated? An ambitious, newly arrived governor-general, Earl Grey, wanted to "redeem" what he considered one of the holiest sites of the British Empire - the site of General James Wolfe's triumph - with a historic park and a mammoth Angel of Peace. Politically, he hoped to tie Canada more firmly to the Empire, culturally and militarily.
To state the obvious, this was not going to be an easy sell in Quèbec. Nevertheless, under his deft hand, a national campaign was launched to finance the acquisition of the battlefield site. Ontario and British Columbia were persuaded, along with Quèbec, to contribute financially to demonstrate the national significance of the site and the celebrations. The king chipped in, too - as did the Government of Canada, which was prevailed upon to make the largest contribution.
For according to the dominant narrative, Champlain's Habitation - or, in the alternative imperialist scenario, the Battle on the Plains of Abraham - marked the Founding of Canada. The Government of Canada, then as now, was a reluctant recruit to the cause. The prime minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, in whose riding the events would unfold, had no qualms about spending money to benefit his constituents. (The most visible form of federal patronage on the Plains of Abraham was the new rifle factory and ammunitions works.) Then, as now, the ability to get money out of Ottawa was seen as the true test of one's Quèbecois devotion. But he feared the explosive potential that would be unleashed by any discussion of history, empire and proto-Quèbec nationalism. He preferred to celebrate the future – with an emphasis on progress and technology. If he'd had his way, the celebrations would have focused on the opening of the Quèbec Bridge. But following its tragic 1907 collapse in a ghastly heap of twisted metal while under construction, he had no choice but to go along.
Yet even though the Tercentenary celebrations were historical in theme, it was a peculiar kind of history - one that was selectively remembered to serve multiple present needs. In the case of the historical pageants, Quèbec history turned out to be more royalist, pious and aristocratic than one would have expected. The representation of the battle of 1759 became a grand mingling of armies under joint British and French command marching together in peace. And if the British victory on the Plains were to be celebrated, so too the French victory at Sainte-Foy the next spring had to be elevated to historical equivalence. This was history modified to meet present requirements, toned down or changed to assuage sensibilities, or selectively represented to counteract one form of imperial grandeur with another. This was history as people wished it to be.
The institutional support of the Catholic Church was, of course, required to make the celebrations a complete success. But the Church, wishing to assert its autonomous leadership, had an agenda of its own, and a price had to be paid for its participation. In a parallel celebration, the Church presided over a fete crowned by the erection of a statue marking the 200th anniversary of the death of François de Laval, the first bishop of Quèbec. If the governor-general desired the Church to participate in his festival, he would in turn have to dignify the Laval unveiling with his presence. Grudgingly, Earl Grey decided his Tercentenary celebration was worth a mass. And in return, the Church conducted a magnificent open air service in the Pageant Theatre to redeem the Plains of Abraham on its own terms.
At that time, there was no possibility that the king or the pope might visit. But deputations of lesser rank from Rome, France, Great Britain and the United States did attend. Britain sent not only the Prince of Wales, but in a deviously skillful manoeuvre, also the Duke of Norfolk, the most prominent and powerful English Catholic of the realm. How could a dour dentist, vice president Fairbanks of the United States, or a woefully miscast Protestant Republican deputy from France compare with the man who would be king and an aristocrat known to have the ear of the pope? Nowadays, the Queen would be an incendiary presence and the pope himself a fading draw in an increasingly secular society. They would also awkwardly interrupt the entertainment. Anniversaries pretend to be about the past, but they are really about the present. To borrow a phrase, like war, they are politics by other means. Typically, they are multi-vocal events in which many interests struggle to get their messages across, attract an audience and get someone else to pay. Under the pressure of putting on a good show, it is surprising how much middle ground can be found. But in the run-up to the 400th anniversary celebrations, we should not expect these events to be focused and coherent. Rather, we should revel in the cacophony, the contradictions and ironies - as a familiar story unfolds theatrically, with history being but a pretext. Things can be said and more readily tolerated in theatre than can be declaimed from the pulpit, the platform or the editorial page.
In these contested times, when the fate of Confederation remains in doubt, history itself has been totally dispensed with. Only pure entertainment will suffice to bring opposing factions together in Quèbec, and tourists to the city from the rest of Canada and abroad. At a time when history itself has been shuffled into the shadows, a source of shame and embarrassment (if not boredom) to many, it can be overlooked with relief. Better to celebrate celebrity, Quèbec's abundant talent, the play of light ... and the return of federal sponsorship.

Feature Story of the Week

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin for good reason. Exposure to sunlight triggers the synthesis of Vitamin D in the body. In fact, natural sun can produce 20,000 IU of Vitamin D in only about 20 minutes of sun exposure when the sun is 'high in the sky'. While the body can only use a portion of this, it can be stored for times when we don't make Vitamin D.

While Vitamin D has been long known to help prevent osteoporosis and tuberculosis, recent research has produced a seemingly endless list of other health benefits including reduced risk of cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, depression and heart disease.

Despite the many possible health benefits of Vitamin D, nutrition experts say we are getting far too little of it.

In fact, anywhere from one-third to one-half of otherwise healthy middle-aged and older adults in developed countries are deficient in vitamin D. The deficiency is mostly attributed to lack of sun exposure, pigmented skin that prevents penetration of the sun's rays and an inadequate intake of Vitamin D enriched foods.

Two factors may hinder our ability to derive Vitamin D from sunlight, which is its natural source. For those living in northern climes, winter sunlight exposure is often insufficient to produce significant amounts of it. And during the warmer months, use of sunscreen can prevent our bodies from replenishing its stores. If you use a sun protection factor (SPF) of 8 or greater, you block your body's ability to synthesize sunlight into Vitamin D, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In fact, in contrast to years of advice to apply sunscreen before going outdoors, short periods of unprotected sun exposure can be beneficial to your health, experts now say. The key is moderation. 10-15 minutes of exposure to the face, hands or back is usually enough to provide sufficient vitamin D, according to the NIH.

This is by no means an invitation to return to the free-wheeling days of 'shake and bake'. The initial 10-15 exposure to sunlight should be immediately followed by application of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to avoid risk for skin cancer, experts say.

Fast facts about Vitamin D

The only natural foods containing Vitamin D are egg yolk, liver and fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines. It is also found in fortified foods such as some cereals and beverages such as milk, margarine and soy milk.

Vitamin D is available over the counter in 1,000 IU pills or drops.

Are you Vitamin D-deficient? A simple blood test -- the 25(OH) D or calcidiol test -- can indicate if your Vitamin D level is low.

Vitamin D is not only good for man but man's best friend too!!!! Here is a recipe for dog food that was given to me by my friend Fiona. she makes it for her dog Haley, who has a very delicate stomache. She tells me she hasn't met a dog who doesn't just wolf it down. Max absolutely devours it.

It is a relatively simple recipe, but its best to make large quantities, then freeze, so it can be time consuming. And the best part, is that in the long run it not only is healthier for your dog, but cheaper than bying either canned or dry dog food.

Dog Food Recipe

  • Equal parts cooked lean ground beef and brown whole grain rice (cooked).
  • Meat should be boiled in water, about an hour; after it cools, lift off the fat, and drain off the water. (You can also do 2/3 rice to 1/3 meat, rather than half and half.)
  • Grated carrot (equivalent to about carrot a day) (you can also use brocolli, or mixed frozen peas and carrots)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Calcium (roughly tsp a day: I save my eggshells and grind them up for this)
  • 1 egg a week
  • tsp cod liver oil a day (another way of getting both the calcium and the fish oil is to add one tin of sardines a week)
Happy Cooking!

One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Update on Mother

Well, it's finally over and I'm back home for the night. The doctor said she went through the surgery real well. They put her in a room for tonight. I'll go back and get her tomorrow. He wasn't able to get the hernia fixed with a scope, it was too big. He made a small insission and said it would heal fine. She was hungry when she got back to the room. They brought her turkey and dressing and I fed part of it to her. Then she got sick to her stomach and was throwing up. She has a week stomach anyway. I could believe them giving her dressing. They had to give her & IV of phenogran. Boy did that knock her out. I would watch her and when I saw those toes moving & the little snore she does like her Mother, I knew she was OK. She kinda does a puff puff puff with her mouth. LOL I was glad to see that. She did get up and go to the bathroom with mine & the nurses help. Had to get her back to bed in a wheel chair. She was hurting and they gave her some pain medicine.

Bear was sure glad to see me come in. He kept looking for Mother to come in behind me. I'm worn out and think I'll go to be in a little bit. Forgot to have them hold my emails, so I've got almost 300. Wanted you all to know how she is doing. I called Matt, Tonya & Richie to let them know she was OK. Today is Richie's 40th birthday. We've also been back in Ridgely a year today.

Also called Mother's sisters and my cousin, Joan. She was up there with me for a while this morning. I ate supper with Aunt Jewell tonight. Guess I'll check a few email then off to bed. Hope I get home early enough tomorrow to answer some of your emails.

Love & Hugs, ">Billie.

Argentina Report

Hello everyone,

I returned from my holiday in SALTA - one of the strong places on the list as an optional visit during Reunion 2008. We went the 400 Km (250 miles) by bus on the 11th June to Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital. That same day we visited a huge exhibition on home construction
The next day we flew to Salta city, the flight lasting 2 hours, 15 minutes, as opposed to the two days it would have taken by road. One of the first things we found was a show in honour of the lead singer of a folk group which were responsible many years ago for giving me my love of Argentine folk music: Los Fronterizos

An important event during our stay, taking place over two days, was the celebrations for the anniversary of the death of a national hero, General Martin Miguel Güemes, who was known as the Gaucho General. The ceremony started on the night of the 16th with the tradition formation of the guard under the stars. It was a very cold night, but that didn"t stop thousand of people from milling around the hero's monument from an early hour, until midnight when the ceremony officially started.

The next day, there was a huge parade at the foot of the monument, schools, scouts, folk groups - including the one we belonged to last year, (and we have been persuaded to return) all kinds of military and people in native dress many on horse-back, and many taking part having come down from the surrounding mountain villages.

After the parade, we were invited to join our former group in a collective BBQ out in the country, where it seemed every and their horses were present

The day had started very cold, that could be felt standing around waiting for the parade to start and while it was going on. I felt sorry for the ladies in the military who were not wearing warm socks and long trousers like every one else! But by the afternoon during the BBQ we had to start shedding our outer layers of warm clothing, and were soon dancing in shirt sleeves! Though that didn't last long, as soon as the sun started setting it turned cold again
More Photos of the monument

I will continue with my story next week

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008

A message from sharon bout her plans to attend the reunion.

I am so ready to book my flight for the infinitely enchanting country which so deserves the label 'land of extremes' ---- Argentina! Over the past several months Daphne has been sending in articles about this vast modern country that occupies a large chunk of southern South America. Of course I have been doing my own research and have discovered that it is topographically diverse from its snow-capped peaks and glaciers of the Andes to the dusty plains of Patagonia. It would take a lifetime to explore the lush rainforest of Missiones, horse riding in the scorched red mountains of Salta, trekking the turquoise lakes and evergreen forests of the Lake District or playing the gaucho in the fertile Pampas. Whatever we do during the WWWCOF Reunion in this amazing country will be one of ceaseless wonder and boundless adventure and I look forward to every minute of it.

My plans are to fly into the heart of all this ... the smart, contemporary capital city Buenos Aires around the end of September (most likely the 28th - but I will let you know) where I understand that the spirit of the tango is alive and well and the gaucho heritage is celebrated.

I already know that the people of Argentina are warm and friendly. I have met Daphne and I know the Argentines have a tenacious spirit and lust for life that is infectious. There is never a dull moment in Argentina and I hope you will be there to experience the excitement with me. ARGENTINA HERE I COME!

Love,
Sharon from Paradise Island, aka Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

With four months to go before Reunion 2008, those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.

Eat local foods

Fill your plate with locally grown fruits, vegetables and packaged foods that you've bought at your grocery store, farmer's market or direct from the farm.

How to do it

Read the signs closely in the produce section of your grocery store and opt for fruits and vegetables that are grown either in your home province, or in Canada. When you purchase packaged foods, choose those made in Canada over U.S. or imported foods. In particular, try foods made from small, local companies. Better still, visit a nearby farmers' market on weekends or sign up with a local community supported agriculture program to get produce direct from the grower. If you live in or are driving through a rural community, stop and buy food from roadside stands or at the end of a farmer's lane.

Why you're doing it

The average food item travels more than 2,000 kilometres before reaching your plate. All that travel uses a lot of fuel, which creates greenhouse gas emissions. As well, the farmer gets less of your food dollar when there has been travel, duty and distribution companies involved. When farmers get little for their foods, it encourages them to either sell off their land, or start using environmentally unfriendly practices to increase their yields. This one comes from SALTA, and is a dish we tried several times, and some of Leo's family gave us some to take back home:
Humitas- Corn Envelopes In The Husks
WWWCOF COOKBOOK
Yield: 6 Servings
Daphne: RECIPE FROM ARGENTINA
  • 12 whole corn cobs
  • 1 small onion
  • ¼ kg goat's cheese (o pizza cheese)
  • 100 Grs fat-Free Beef Broth
  • 1 small red pepper
  • milk
  • Salt, sugar, Red Pepper Powder, Basil, To Taste
Remove the husks from the corn keeping back the biggest and best of them to form the envelopes. Remove the hairs and wash the corn, then grate them right down to the cob
Apart, heat the fat and fry the chopped onion, then add the finely chopped red pepper, the salt and the red pepper powder. Next add a little warm milk and the grated corn grains, a teaspoon of dried or chopped fresh basil and if you like them sweet, add sugar to taste. Mix well and remove from the heat. If the preparation seems dry, add a little more warm milk. In some places like Tucuman ( north Argentina) they also add grated pumpkin.
Putting the envelopes together.
Wash the selected husks and put two together long sides overlapping. In the middle put about a dessert spoon of the mixture and a piece of cheese. Wrap over the long sides of the husks then the ends to form a packet about 3 square by 1 deep, and tie with a strip from other husks. They are cooked in abundant boiling water, and simmered for about an hour or until the husks turn yellow.
Note; A more modern way of preparing the corn, would be to cut all the grains off the cob and put then them through the blender with pieces of red pepper and the fresh basil leaves. The mixture is also perfectly acceptable in pasty cases instead of wrapped in the husks. As Humitas they are usually served as a starter dish, one or two per person on a plate and opened and eaten with a knife and fork, the husks then discarded.

10 New Uses for Olive Oil
"Olive oil is a good lubricant because its molecules easily slide past one another, thereby helping solid objects to overcome friction," says Wolke. "Its film also fills up microscopic rough spots in surfaces, making them look polished and shiny."
Use Olive Oil to:
1. Shave. Olive oil can provide a closer shave when used in place of shaving cream.
2. Shine stainless steel. Many cleaning standbys, such as ammonia, can dull and even corrode chrome and stainless steel. Olive oil, however, is a safe and effective shining agent.
3. Remove eye makeup. Dab a little under the eyes and rinse off with a washcloth.
4. Prevent wax from sticking to a candle holder. Rub a thin coat on the base of the holder before inserting a candle. Dripped wax should peel away easily.
5. Care for your pet. Add 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon to your cat's food to help prevent hair balls.
6. Moisturize cuticles. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the nail beds.
7. Treat dry skin. Rub a thin layer over the skin after a shower or a waxing.
8. Unstick a zipper. Using a Q-tip, apply a drop to lubricate the teeth. (Avoid touching the fabric.) The zipper should move up and down freely.
9. Dust wooden furniture. Apply a bit of oil to a cloth and wipe.
10. Silence squeaky doors. Lubricate hinges by applying a small dab to a cloth, then wiping the top of the hinges so that the oil runs down the sides.

VOTED BEST SHORT JOKE OF 2007

For his birthday, little Joe asked for a 10-speed bicycle. His father said, 'Son, we'd give you one, but the mortgage on this house is $280,000 & your mother just lost her job. There's no way we can afford it.'
The next day the father saw little Joe heading out the front door with a suitcase. So he asked, 'Son, where are you going?' Little Joe told him; 'I was walking past your room last night and heard you telling Mom you were pulling out. Then I heard her tell you to wait because she was coming too. And I'll be damned if I'm staying here by myself with a $280,000 mortgage & no bike.

Catholic Wisdom

98-year-old Mother Superior from Ireland was dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her last journey comfortable. They tried giving her some warm milk to drink but she refused it.
One of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen and remembering a bottle of Irish whiskey received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk.
Back at Mother Superior's bed, she held the glass to her lips. Mother drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had drunk the whole glass down to the last drop.
"Mother," the nuns asked with earnest, "please give us some wisdom before you die."
She raised herself up in bed and said, "Don't sell that cow!"

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else--the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Common Expressions

Chop-chop

Meaning

Be quick; hurry up.

Origin

This little reduplicated term has its origins in the South China Sea, as a Pidgin English version of the Chinese term k'wi-k'wi. The earliest known citation of chop-chop in print is from the English language newspaper that was printed in Canton in the early 19th century - The Canton Register, 13th May 1834:
We have also... 'chop-chop hurry'.

A slightly fuller account was printed two years later, in a monthly journal which was produced by and for American missionaries in Canton - The Chinese Repository. In January 1836 it contained an article headed 'Jargon Spoken in Canton', which included:
"Chop-chop - pidgin Cantonese phrase for 'Hurry up!'"

The adoption of the chop-chop pronunciation was influenced by the long-standing use of 'chop' and 'chop-up' by English seamen, with the meaning 'quick' or 'hurried'. This usage dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was commonly used in the strange expression - 'chopping-up the whiners'. This referred to gabbling through prayers in order to get them finished quickly. For example, from Philip Stubbes' The anatomie of abuses, 1583:
Which maketh them [Reading ministers] to gallop it over as fast as they can, and to chop it up with all possible expedition, though none understand them.

The seafaring usage of 'chop up' referred specifically to a sudden change in the wind and the waves. This also gives us of the term 'choppy' for turbulent water and is a constituent part of the expression 'chop and change'. 'Chop-up' was recorded by Sir William Monson in Naval Tracts, 1642:
"The Wind would chop up Westerly."

One of the many other meanings of the word chop is 'to eat; to snap up' - i.e. 'to take into the chops' (the jaws/cheeks/mouth). It would be a reasonable conjecture that this was the source of the word 'chop-sticks'. Reasonable, but not correct. It is the 17th century sailor's slang use of 'chop' to mean 'quick' which lead to chop-sticks. The nimbleness of the Chinese in their eating without the aid of forks caused the seamen to coin the term 'quick-sticks' or chop-sticks'. William Dampier recorded this in 1699 in A New Voyage Round the World:
"At their ordinary eating they [the Chinese] use two small round sticks about the length and bigness of a Tobacco-pipe. They hold them both in the right hand, one between the fore-finger and thumb; the other between the middle-finger and fore-finger... they are called by the English seamen Chopsticks."

This is in line with the original Chinese meaning. The Chinese name for chop-sticks is k'wi-tsze, which translates literally as 'nimble boys' or 'nimble ones'.

Apart from in travelogues of the Far-East, there is little recorded mention of chop-sticks in English until the mid 20th century. The term 'quicksticks' however, did make it back to Britain in the 19th century, as an imperative meaning 'hurry up; do it without delay'. John C. Hotten recorded this in A dictionary of modern slang, 1859:
"Quick sticks, in a hurry, rapidly; 'to cut quick sticks', to be in a great hurry."

Bats

Got any mosquitoes or other insects you'd prefer not to have pestering you? If so build a bat house and you'll find yourself swatting alot less during those long, lazy, hazy days of summer.
Did you know that bats are actually mammals, just like us, and produce milk for their young? Did you know they also share typical mammal body parts such as arms, legs, feet, wrists, fingers and so on - in fact even containing the same bones found in the four fingers and hand of a human being.
Bats get around at night by means of "echolocation." They produce ultrasonic sounds that bounce off objects and back to the bat as echoes, thereby enabling them to find their exact location, prey etc. They consume at least 1/2 of their body weight in insects per night - a minimum of at least 600.
Unlike other mammals, they do not produce rapidly, most having one offspring per year with the females congregating in maternal colonies with no help from the males. While in flight a bat's heart rate soars to 1000 beats per minute but while roosting they enter a state of torpor and their rate decreases to 100 to 200 beats per minute.
While it's true that bats can contact rabies, just like dogs, raccoons, skunks, humans etc., they rarely develop the "aggressive" behaviour that's associated with rabies and you can only contact rabies from a bat by actually handling an infected one.
They truly are marvelous creatures, deserving our respect, and just think of all those lovely summer nights where you won't hear Bzzzz zzzzz... Smack, Ouch!

FEMALE HEART ATTACKS

I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is the best description I've ever read.

Women and heart attacks (Myocardial infarction). Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have when experiencing heart attack ... you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in the movies. Here is the story of one woman's experience with a heart attack.

'I had a heart attack at about 10 :30 PM with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might've brought it on.

I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking, 'A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up.

A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you've been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you've swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn't have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation---the only trouble was that I hadn't taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

After it seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR).

This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. 'AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening -- we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, haven't we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, Dear God, I think I'm having a heart attack!

I lowered the footrest dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself, If this is a heart attack, I shouldn't be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else ... but, on the other hand, if I don't, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in moment.

I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics . I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn't feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in.

I unlocked the door and then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don't remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the Cardiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like 'Have you taken any medications?') but I couldn't make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stents to hold open my right coronary artery.

'I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the Paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents.

'Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand.'

  • 1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body not the usual men's symptoms but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn't know they were having one and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation and go to bed, hoping they'll feel better in the morning when they wake up ... which doesn't happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you've not felt before. It is better to have a 'false alarm' visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!

  • 2. Note that I said 'Call the Paramedics.' And if you can take an asprin. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER - you are a hazard to others on the road. Do NOT have your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what's happening with you instead of the road. Do NOT call your doctor -- he doesn't know where you live and if it's at night you won't reach him anyway, and if it's daytime, his assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn't carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.

  • 3. Don't assume it couldn't be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it's unbelievably high and/or accompanied by high blood pressure).. MIs are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.

I hope you have enjoyed this week's edition of Global Express which I would like to close with soemthing my neighbour & friend just sent me (who is not a member of the WWWCOF!

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

When I was little,
I used to believe in the concept of one best friend,
And then I started to become a woman.
And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up,
God would show you the best in many friends.

One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man.
Another friend is needed when you're going through things with your mom.
Another will sit beside you in the bleachers as you delight in your children and their activities.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.
One friend will say, 'Let's cry together,'
Another, 'Let's fight together,'
Another, 'Let's walk away together.'

One friend will meet your spiritual need,
Another your shoe fetish,
Another your love for movies,
Another will be with you in your season of confusion,
Another will be your clarifier,
Another the wind beneath your wings.

But whatever their assignment in your life,
On whatever the occasion,
On whatever the day,
Or wherever you need them to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back,
Or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself...
Those are your best friends.

It may all be wrapped up in one woman,
But for many, it's wrapped up in several...
One from 7th grade,
One from high school,
Several from the college years,
a couple from old jobs,
On some days your mother,
On some days your neighbor,
On others, your sisters,
And on some days, your daughters.

So whether they've been your friend for 20 minutes or 20 years,
AND ONLY IF YOU'D LIKE TO,
Pass this on to the women that God has placed in your life To make a difference.
