INTRIGUING SOUTH AMERICA !

It seems like only yesterday I arrived on Vancouver Island for the first time. But it is a year today that Sharon picked me up at the airport in Victoria.

And boy what a year it has been! After three short months here, and the addition of Max, I returned to Ontario. Then before I could barely blink, Max and I were back on a plane and meeting Sharon, once again at the Victoria airport.

It has now been close to five months since my return, and a lot has happened. I just finished my third move, yes you heard right, 3 moves in 5 months. However I do not see any more moves in the immediate future.

As well, I recently took over as manager of the Twin Gables (the motel where I live). And it has been very hectic. Learning a new job is always daunting, but I have stepped up to the plate, and according to my bosses, I’m doing a great job. In only the second month on the job I have rented 7 units! That includes cleaning them, to be ready to show, making appointments for potential tenants, and interviewing them. Now the place is full, I should be able to find a little more free time.

But I did it all with a smile on my face and I’m very proud of myself.

Through it all I have been trying to organize my new place, take time to do the newsletter, as well as time for my arts & crafts! No wonder I get up at 5 am everyday!

But I am enjoying every moment. Things are going so much better now. I feel like I have a little breathing room.

I know many of you wonder where I am. I am still here. I read the posts on the Google board, and do appreciate all the emails I get.

Hopefully things will be smoother for Sharon soon, and she will return to doing the newsletter.

Anyway, love to you all, till next time. If you are interested in seeing where I live, check out his link: Twin Gables

HOW TO FORWARD E-MAIL APPROPRIATELY!

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails.

Please read the short letter below, even if you're sure you already follow proper procedures.

Please share it with your email buddies!

Do you really know how to forward e-mails? Most of us DO NOT know how.

Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it?

Every time you forward an e-mail, there is information left over from the people who got the message before you -- namely their e-mail addresses & names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every email address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel!

How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps:

  • (1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever you know how to. It only takes a second. You MUST click the 'Forward' button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't hit the forward button first you won't have full editing functions . I particularly dislike having to scroll through 200 Email addresses before I get to the email.
  • (2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the "To:" or "Cc:" fields for adding e-mail addresses.. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address.
If you don't see your "BCC:" option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say 'Undisclosed Recipients' in the 'TO:' field of the people who receive it.
That way you aren't sharing all those addresses with every Tom, Dick or Harry.
  • (3) Remove any 'FW:' in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.
This one is very important - please read and heed!
  • (4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent. These are the ones that often end up having picked up a virus from somebody. This is really important!
  • (5) Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses.
A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (Actually, if you think about it, who's supposed to send the petition in to whatever cause it supports? And don't believe the one s that say that the email is being traced, it just ain't so!)
  • (6) One of the main ones I hate is the ones that say that something like, 'Send this email to 10 people and you'll see something great run across your screen.' Or, sometimes they'll just tease you by saying something really cute will happen.
IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (Trust me, I'm still seeing some of the same ones that I waited on 10 years ago!) I don't let the bad luck ones scare me either, they get trashed. (Could this be why I haven't won the lottery??)
  • (7) Before you forward an Amber Alert, or a Virus Alert, or some of the other ones floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that's been circling the net for Years!
Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes. Just go to http://www.snopes. com/ It's really easy to find out if it's real or not. If it's not, please don't pass it on. So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses.

Finally, here's an idea!!! Let's send this to everyone we know (but strip my address off first, please).

This is something that SHOULD be forwarded.

Inspirational

A birth certificate shows that we were born; a death certificate shows that we died; pictures show that we lived! Have a seat... Relax. And read this slowly.

I believe - That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I believe - That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I believe - That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I believe - That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I believe - That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I believe - That no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I believe - That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I believe - That either you control your attitude or it controls you. I believe - That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I believe - That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I believe - That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I believe - That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I believe - That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I believe - That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I believe - That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I believe - That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I believe - That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones to help you get back up.

I believe - That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I believe - Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I believe - That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I believe - That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I believe - That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I believe - That you should send this to all of the people that you believe in. I just did. The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.

The father answers, 'Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. COMMON EXPRESSIONS

In a cleft stick

Meaning:In a position where advance and retreat are both impossible; in a fix.

Origin

When we cleave something we split it into two pieces and it is then said to be 'cleft' or 'cloven'. These archaic-sounding words aren't commonly used alone these days and only persist in phrases like 'cleft-palate', 'cloven-hoofed' and 'in a cleft stick'. Cleft sticks are those which are split at one end, i.e. forked sticks. These were used as simple tools for carrying small items such as bundles of paper or candles. Jonathan Swift makes a reference to such in his 'Directions to Servants' in Works, circa 1745:

"You may conveniently stick your candle in a bottle, or with a lump of butter against the wainscot, in a powder-horn, or in an old shoe, or in a cleft stick."

Swift's use, although hardly serious, is a literal one and doesn't suggest the figurative use, which is first recorded in the correspondence in William Cowper's Works, 1782:
"We are squeezed to death, between the two sides of that sort of alternative which is commonly called a cleft stick."

'In a cleft stick' originated in the UK and its use elsewhere is limited. How then did it come to mean 'in a difficult situation, unable to move'? As is so often the case, there is more than one theory. Theory One has it that cleft sticks were used to capture snakes, pinning them to the ground so that they were unable to move. Theory Two suggests that cleft pegs were used to punish over-talkative women, pinching their tongues so that they were unable to speak.

The first theory has the advantage of closely matching the meaning of the phrase - snakes certainly are sometimes caught and made immobile using split sticks. Also, the first citation of the use of a cleft stick to catch a snake predates references in other contexts. That comes in the Review of the Works of the Royal Society of London, 1751, in which Captain Silas Taylor described 'A Way to Kill Rattlesnakes':
Procure a cleft Stick, and put into the Notch of it, a Quantity of the bruised Leaves of wild Pennyroyal; direct the End of the Stick towards the Serpent's Nose; as he avoids it, still pursue him with it; and in half an Hour's Time he will be killed by the mere Scent of the Herb.

It is unlikely that the English antiquary Taylor ever came within a stick's length of a rattlesnake and his rather roundabout method of dispatching them isn't quite the evidence we are looking for. On to Theory Two.

In 16th century England, any women who was considered to be a scold, i.e. a user of abusive or ribald language, especially against her husband, was in danger of being punished in a fearsome apparatus called a 'branks', also known as a 'scold's bridle' or gossip's bridle'. The device was an iron cage with a tongue that projected into the mouth of the victim and prevented speech.

A branks might look like a prop from a Ye Olde Englande B-feature, but they were widely used punishments throughout the Middle Ages. In 1890, when William Andrews published Old-time Punishments, Walton-on-Thames Parish Church had such a device on display. It was dated 1632 and inscribed with this little couplet:

Chester presents Walton with a bridle To curb women's tongues that talk too idle.

The early English settlers to the USA didn't bring these punishment devices with them and other methods for chastising unruly women were used there. The Records of the Town of East-Hampton, 1639-1680, transcribed and published in 1883, record the use of the alternative 'cleft stick' method in the case of a woman described as "very ignorant, selfish and imperious": http://wwwcof.bravepages.com/cleft-stick.jpg February 2, 1652. "It is ordered that Goody Edwards shal pay 3 or have her tongue in a cleft sticke for the Contempt of a warent."

In addition to their superficial plausibility, what the two theories given above have in common is an American source. The phrase isn't American though and doesn't appear in print there until many years after Cowper's 1782 citation. It is more likely that 'in a cleft stick' never did refer to a specific item but to the general condition of immobility when stuck between a cleft stick's jaws.

Our planet awareness site, Planet Kryzys has many interesting stories of different aspects of a planet under Crisis. Among them some brand new ones from our new correspondent in Perth Australia, Robyn, who has sent in stories about Australian animals like the Koala and kangaroo, as well as a national Park and the adventures of moving a huge tree hundreds of years old. Do please take a moment to visit it, and maybe it will remind you that YOUR area has something interesting to offer the rest of the world.

We have started a NEW SECTION in the Planet Awareness site, all about Regional, State, Provincial or National Parks. So a challenge is set to tell us about the one/those in visiting distance from you.
Los Glaciares National Park, ARGENTINA

The Los Glaciares National Park is located in the Southwest of the Province of Santa Cruz, bordering with Chile. There are 47 glaciers in the Park. Some of them are the Upsala, Spegazzini, Mayo, Perito Moreno -all of them flowing into the Lago Argentino (Argentino Lake)-, Onelli, Ameghino and Fras. The Argentino, Roca and Viedma lakes are also within the Park. Tourists from all over the world come to this place attracted by the glaciers, the outdoor activities and the fauna.
The first settlers were the AoniKenk -actually known as "tehuelches". They used to hunt guanacos and pick roots, seeds and herbs for food. The first sailors to arrive in these lands were Fitz Roy and Darwin. They came on the "Beagle". From that moment on, Luis Piedrabuena, Gardiner, Feilberg and Francisco Moreno visited the area.
The climate is cold and winds reach a speed of 120 km/h (75 miles per hour) during the spring and the summer. Therefore, it is important to be extremely careful when going along the local routes, as they are made of rubble and the snow and the ice sometimes become a big problem. Within the park, lenga is the most common tree as it is also in southern Argentina, where it rains quite frequently.

Quick Internet tips

  • When you are are on a web site that you want to put into your "favorites", to be able to pull up later, just put your cursor anywhere on the page and hit CTRL D. This will automatically save the web address in your favorites.
  • Let's say you're looking for something on a long web page with Internet Explorer. You think it's there, but you're faced with seemingly insurmountable number of paragraphs, sentences, and words to hunt though. Just hit the Edit menu, Find (or CTRL+F for you shortcut lovers). You'll get a handy little "find" box that lets you type in a specific word. After you type in your search term, hit the Find Next button and Explorer will look for that word on the page. If it's successful, you'll be zapped right to it.
The Ctrl+F thing works with AOL and Netscape too.

Yield: 12 Servings
This is a large, juicy cake which is often served at coffee houses and bakeries in Sweden. You won't need any baking powder since it contains so many eggs. Recipe Introduction wwwcof msn Community-Sweden Source of Recipe
  • 15 Oz canned peaches or pears
  • 7 Oz margarine or butter
  • 1 Cup sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 3/4 Cup flour
  • 2 Tsp ground cinnamon
Grease and flour a round or square cake pan, capacity about 8 cups, or a small roasting pan, 8 x 12". Heat the oven to 350F.
Drain the fruit well, then cut in thin slices or wedges. Stir fat and sugar until fluffy. Stir in the eggs, one by one, and blend well between each. Add flour.
Pour about 1/3 of the batter in the dish and spread out evenly. Divide the fruit on top and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then pour on remaining batter. Put the dish on a rack in the lower part of the oven and bake for about 1 hour if you use a round dish, a little shorter if you use a roasting pan. Check for "readiness". Let the cake cool in the dish or pan. It keeps in a cool place, covered with plastic or aluminum foil, for 3 - 4 days. In the freezer it keeps for about 6 months.
This cake is lovely if you serve it as a dessert with half-melted ice cream or whipped cream.

*Dog Pack Attacks Louisiana Gator In Texas*

At times nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.

The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the 'apex predator', can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and 'survival of the pack mentality' bred into the canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine. Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing.

The third dog attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

Not for the squeamish...

TO: GOD
FROM: THE DOG

Dear God: Is it on purpose our names are the same, only reversed?

Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?

Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?

Dear God: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a Dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so hard to rename the 'Chrysler Eagle' the 'Chrysler Beagle'?

Dear God: If a Dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad Dog?

Dear God: We Dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?

Dear God: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.

Dear God: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?

Dear God: Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to be a good Dog.

  • 1. I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.
  • 2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.
  • 3. The Litter Box is not a cookie jar.
  • 4. The sofa is not a 'face towel'.
  • 5. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.
  • 6. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.
  • 7. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying 'hello'.
  • 8. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee table .
  • 9. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house - not after.
  • 10. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.
  • 11. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch.
  • 12. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.
P.S. Dear God: When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles back?

'Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened'

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

The best "GIFT" you can give Anyone is "PRAYER."
Have you ever thought about how many souls are lost because no one took the time to even pray for them? Our #1 Prayer for everyone should be for Salvation. That NO Soul is Lost! Adhere to the voice and feelings you hear and feel. It is the Holy Spirit talking to you. Share the way to Heaven with everyone you know. Pray for their Salvation not just their needs. Healing and getting through trials and tribulations is nothing without Jesus Christ in their hearts. This is only a short term life on earth, help others have eternity in Heaven!

Please keep all those touched by the tropical storms Fay in prayer for their needs and may it be turned around to the Glory of God.
