BigSisPat's Journal

Hi everyone I am doing well, been busy moving across to me new home. Still have lots of other chores and issues to deal with. Had a farewell party for Christine (she moved to Calgary, and I took over her unit). It was a great party. As much as I'm thrilled with my new digs, christine and I became vey good friends, and I'm gonna miss her.

As for Sharon, she was still moving all her stuff (can you imagine 35 years of collecting?). Plus, of course all of Yvonnes things to. She also had more lawyers appointements. And that's a whole other story.

She did ask me to tell you she is fine, but had problems getting internet hooked up (was supposed to be done yesterday (Tuesday). She misses you all, and will be back online soon. Well gotta run, got stuff to do, as usual. Will try to keep in touch more, but no promises, I have several units to clean and get ready for rental, and in some cases occupancy, including my own! ha ha.!

Next week, hopefully I can get back on track and write something a little more lengthy.

Talk to you soon, love ya

“Deemed Unsuitable”: Black Pioneers in Western Canada

On August 12, 1911 the Laurier government drafted and approved a remarkable document. The proposed Order in Council read:
For a period of one year from and after the date hereof the landing in Canada shall be [sic] and the same is prohibited of any immigrants belonging to the Negro race, which race is deemed unsuitable to the climate and requirements of Canada.

Thomas Mapp and family, a group of Black settlers from Amber Valley, Alberta (courtesy Glenbow Archives/NA-316.1).

The fact that the government of Canada preferred some immigrants to others was scarcely surprising in 1911. Although not officially ranked by preference, people from Great Britain and northern Europe were favoured, with other Europeans somewhat lower on the list, and Asians of all nationalities lower still. Surprisingly the government hoped to keep some American citizens from entering Canada, while encouraging most others to come. In the end, this Order in Council was never invoked, but the story of how Black Americans came to be deemed "unsuitable" as settlers is fascinating, and disturbing.

There had been Black settlers in western Canada prior to 1905, but they were few in number and most attracted little notice. However, in the early 1900s larger numbers of Black settlers were attracted by a combination of the promotional literature extolling ours as the "Last, Best West," and growing political and economic discrimination in a number of American states, particularly Oklahoma.

Between about 1905 and 1911 over one thousand Black Americans emigrated to western Canada, and thousands more might have come had Canada proved more welcoming. By 1908-09 there were small communities of Black homesteaders at Wildwood, Alberta and near Maidstone, Saskatchewan. Over the next two years a small settlement was established at Campsie, near Barrhead, Alberta, and larger settlements at Breton and Amber Valley, just east of Athabasca, Alberta. Not all found the prospect of homesteading in the bush attractive, and some chose to stay in cities to find work. Edmonton, in particular, attracted a significant number, and by 1910 it was reported that as many as 100 Blacks were living there.

This increasingly visible minority and reports of large parties of Black settlers preparing to come to Canada caused an uproar. The Edmonton Board of Trade led the way, and in 1910 it stated, "We want settlers that will assimilate with the Canadian people and in the negro we have a settler that will never do that." Canadian immigration authorities agreed. Attempts were made to keep Blacks from obtaining immigration literature, and plans were made to use medical inspections and other deterrents to keep Blacks from entering Canada.

One group attracted close attention. Its leader, Henry Sneed, had visited western Canada in 1910 to scout land before returning to Oklahoma to recruit settlers. By early 1911 Sneed and a party of 194 men, women and children were ready to leave for Canada. A second group of about 200 people waited behind to see what would happen when the first reached Canada.

Once in Canada, their progress became the subject of extensive newspaper commentary. In Edmonton, the Board of Trade resumed its leadership role in opposing Black settlement, but now it was supported by other organizations ranging from the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE) to the Edmonton Trades and Labour Council. The Board of Trade prepared a petition addressed to Prime Minister Laurier, which was posted prominently in a number of Edmonton area businesses and taken door to door by canvassers. Despite having a total population of just 25 000 people at the time, some 3000 Edmontonians signed. The petition read in part:
We, the undersigned residents of the City of Edmonton, respectfully urge upon your attention and that of the Government of which you are the head, the serious menace to the future welfare of a large portion of western Canada, by reason of the alarming influx of Negro settlers.

The Laurier government was vulnerable on this issue, especially as Frank Oliver was both Minister of the Interior – and thus responsible for immigration policy – and the Member of Parliament for Edmonton. The infamous Order in Council was quickly drawn up. Government immigration agents also followed a less direct approach to the issue. They made a concerted effort to convince potential Black settlers that western Canada was not really the "Last, Best West" – at least not for them.

In the end, this campaign and a growing sense on the part of Black community leaders that emigration was not the answer, slowed Black immigration. The government was able to congratulate itself that the crisis had been averted. But for one brief moment, the intolerant face of Canadian society had been starkly revealed.

In the end, most Black settlers made the best of their new homes, despite the poor reception they initially received. Many have made significant contributions in politics, the arts, sports and other fields. In 1986, for example, many Canadians were probably puzzled over how a remarkable athlete named Reuben Mayes could be the National Football League's Rookie of Year and yet come from North Battleford. Like so many other settlers and their descendants who went on to successful careers, he was just one part of this "unsuitable" aspect of Canadian history.

One Man's Kingdom?

At one time in history, men of wealth or power (or possibly vision), were keen to make their mark upon the world to leave something behind them to remind the world who they were!

One such man came to a small valley in Wales, where minerals could be dug from the earth, and sold for profit elsewhere; and land could be bought quite cheaply upon which to build a home and his industries. Labourers could be recruited locally; building materials quarried from his land; and a local river harnessed to power his machines.

So this man bought land and employed people to dig stone from it to build a home for him, he opened a mine, and a quarry and employed more people to work in them. He established a mill at the side of his river and employed more folk to work there too. His mine and quarries were high on the mountainside; so the man devised and had built a system by which the coal and minerals could be brought down to his valley, from where they could more easily be transported. He decided that his workers should live nearer to his works and his mill, so decided that he would have built for them cottages - which he would rent to them. Now the man needed a shop, from which his workers could buy food, clothing and furniture, and an Inn, from which his workers could buy ale or spirits. Soon this man had his own little kingdom - in his own little valley.

You can see this man's kingdom in the picture above; his home is the large white building on the left, his mill is the large building on the right. The terrace of cottages the man built for his workers is partly obscured, but can be seen to the right of his home; while the Inn and shop that he built are close to, and on the left of his mill in the picture.
A quarry for building stone can be seen on the hillside above his home; but where, you ask are his mine and quarries? Well, those are behind me, where I stand, on the hill, admiring this man's kingdom!

Eventually, our man noticed that profits from the sale of his coal and minerals and the products of his mill were decreasing; so unfortunately he couldn't offer his workers an increase of pay; but, as they lived in his cottages, and bought food from his shop and ale from his inn, they didn't actually need money! He would give them instead tokens, which they could redeem for food and goods - anywhere within his kingdom; and in this way, our man could regain some of this lost money!!

However, each year, profits seemed to decline; while the cost of maintaining the cottages and of buying and transporting food and ale seemed to rise - so he was forced, unfortunately, to charge more tokens as rent and for the food that he sold. Would you believe it - his workers eventually started to leave his kingdom; they claimed that they were starving, that their children were ill from lack of nourishment - they were even prepared to take their indebtedness to him with them!!

After a few more years this man found that he could no longer get people to take employment with him, his mine and quarry closed for lack of men to work them. His mill lasted a while longer, but eventually suffered the same fate. His family grew up and moved away - eager to make their own mark upon the world and his kingdom gradually dwindled away.

What mark you ask did this man leave upon his world?

Well his fine home now provides shelter for elderly and infirm people who would struggle to look after themselves; though it no longer bears his name.

The workers cottages that he had built; were renovated and modernized (saved from ruin really), and each was sold for many times the annual profit of the man's kingdom. His inn and shop were demolished when the building became unsafe.

His mill, now no-longer powered by a water-wheel, is currently being used by a company who manufacture plastic pellets.

Of his mine little remains - indeed only the smoke stack for boilers that once existed to make steam for winding engines.

This mine has been lost for so long now that few even remember its name; though many can tell of the hardship that workers there endured. Limbs and lives this mine claimed in its day; when a tired miner grew careless at the end of a long shift, or when cost cutting left insufficient shoring in an area still worked.

Pictured above are the man's quarry, and the spoil heaps from his mine. Below are pictures which show all that is left of his devices for moving coal and minerals down into his valley.

Nature has now reclaimed much of this man's kingdom, as you can see.

Frogs and small fish live in the pool where his mine once stood; wild birds nest in the quarry where minerals once were extracted; trees, grass and shrubs grow in abundance over all of his works.

The owner? His name is remembered, though usually spoken with distaste, or contempt!

Jan's Ramblings

My brothers and sister all attended Barry's birthday party in January, and decided that we should meet up more often. As our house is about half way between their homes, it is the designated meeting place, and they all came on the weekend.
They had talked about having a "Christmas in July", but we didn't end up doing that.

Amazing to hear about the pilot bringing a Boeing747 down from about 30,000 feet after a hole was ripped in the side of the plane, and the fact that an airport was handy to land on.
EXPERTS are investigating the possibility an exploding oxygen cylinder ripped a jagged hole in the fuselage of the Boeing 747-400 jumbo with 346 passengers aboard when it was shaken by the blast and forced into an emergency landing in the Philippines on Friday.
If it was caused by an oxygen container, such a finding would have major implications for 747s around the world, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said today.
Passengers aboard Flight QF30 had just been served a meal after a stopover in Hong Kong when they heard a loud bang, then their ears popped as air rushed out of the three-metre hole. Oxygen masks dropped from some, but not all of the overhead lockers as the jet descended rapidly and debris flew through the cabin.
The aircraft, en route to Melbourne from London, managed to land safely minutes later at Manila airport, leaving passengers and crew unhurt but badly shaken.

Survey of the Week

This week's survey comes from Valter, in Brazil. He wants to know your thoughts on the upcoming Olympics in Bejing.

My friends;

I’d like to know the opinions regarding the Olympiad in Asia now on August 08.

Folks, why the Olympiad will be in Asia, more specifically China?? The costs obviously will be much higher than the others places me suggested before. Surely all we know that the background issue has been politic and the huge interests too, but the question is whom??

China has grown up about 10% per year during the last 10 years. It means that in this period they double their economy, besides it nowadays everybody or every country in the world wide depend on their products, and then someone decided that the games will be there, why? As far as I know, there will be a huge supplying problem because the China’s government decided to go down the industrial activities due the Pollution problems.

All we know that the capital Peking and cities around has been very polluted and the people can’t breathe anymore, well they decided to show to the rest of the world that they’re ready to be a new economic potency replacing the USA. It’s very important to show that they’re improving the environment problems, including the pollution. Very smart, in these cases the best way is to stop the production, and just to close for few months a good part of Chinese plants, believe or not.

Conclusion,

We’ve been food supplying problems in the world wide nowadays, and the food prices are growing up so much in general and the diagnostic of the economists’ specialists has been the Methanol’s production offered by the development countries like BRIC – Brazil, Russian, India and China. Complicated international theme where the specialists are seeking by the guilty, and not by the solutions, and even so still them will stop many factories there just to show how the China is ready to takeover onto global economy soon. The price all of us will pay ahead. The global situation will stay worst than now, I guess.

That’s my opinion of course; I’d like to know the your?

Best regards, for all.

Our Furry Friends/ Family Members

Hi Folks, now that summer and trips are in the making (if you can afford the gas that is) I thought this would be a valuable article to pass on for you and your pets.

KEEP VACATIONING PETS SAFE WITH OUR AIR & ROAD TRAVEL TIPS

Your summer vacation's almost here and for some pet parents, traveling's no fun if the four-legged members of the family can't come along. But without thoughtful preparation, going on the road or flying can be highly stressful, both for you and your animal companions. Before you embark on your journey, the ASPCA would like to offer a few helpful hints.

Please visit your veterinarian before traveling to make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and has all the medications he needs. Also ask about parasites or other health risks native to your destination. Your pet should always wear a collar and ID tag clearly stating an address or phone number where you can be reached that includes cell phone number and destination info.

Always bring plenty of plastic jugs filled with bottled or tap water from home. Drinking water she's not used to could upset your pet's stomach. If flying, freeze water in a bowl the night before. It won't spill during loading and it'll melt by the time she's thirsty.

Fly your pet in a USDA-approved shipping crate large enough for her to comfortably stand, sit and turn around in. Write "Live Animal" in large letters on at least two sides of the crate, and draw arrows indicating the crate's upright position. (Of course you should ask the airline if small animals can fly with you in the cabin.)

If driving, never leave your pet in a parked automobile. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a stationary vehicle can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop.

To ensure your trip is a good one, please read our complete air and Road Travel Tips. Wanna get off to a safe and stylish start? Check out the ASPCA's special line of travel gear for pets. Bon voyage!

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

REUNION ARGENTINA OCTOBER 2008

NOTE FROM OUR PROPOSED REUNION HOSTESS
With two months to go before Reunion 2008, Sharon has made positive moves to be here. Who else is going to be brave enough to come?? Those of us in the host country, are still waiting to know how many have confirmed their flight, especially if we want to take full advantage of group bookings and possible discounts once here.

Apart from that, there has been a curious lack of support about Reunion 2008 in Argentina, as much in those interested in coming as in help in any way.

If it wasn't for last minute nothing would ever get done!!! Please let us know real soon

Who are we going to add to this group for reunion 2008 ?

The inscription form to take part in this unforgettable event can be found here: Inscription Form Look forward to getting lots of them!!

Argentina has started some positive recycling experiments. One of these is to use and process used cooking oil to convert it into bio-fuel instead of sending it down the drain where it could contaminate underwater resources. This could be interesting, as Argentina has become one of the worlds biggest producers of Soy to be used as bio-fuel but paradoxically this mainly gets exported to huge consumers like Germany while tearing up the native forest land to plant it!
Another project Argentina is working on, is economical bricks made from recycled plastics

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car . At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP . We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed-Up about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP , you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP ,When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP . When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP . One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP, so........... it is time to shut UP .!

    Oh . . . one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

    Common Expressions

    Bats in the belfry

    Meaning:Crazy; eccentric.

    Origin:

Bats are, of course, the erratically flying mammals and 'belfries' are bell towers, sometimes found at the top of churches. 'Bats in the belfry' refers to someone who acts as though he has bats careering around his topmost part, i.e. his head.

It has the sound of a phrase from Olde Englande and it certainly has the imagery to fit into any number of Gothic novels based in English parsonages or turreted castles. In fact, it comes from the USA; nor is it especially old. All the early citations are from American authors and date from the start of the 20th century. For example, this piece from the Ohio newspaper The Newark Daily Advocate, October 1900:
To his hundreds of friends and acquaintances in Newark, these purile [sic] and senseless attacks on Hon. John W. Cassingham are akin to the vaporings of the fellow with a large flock of bats in his belfry."

Ambrose Bierce, also American, used the term in a piece for Cosmopolitan Magazine, in July 1907, describing it as a new curiosity:
"He was especially charmed with the phrase 'bats in the belfry', and would indubitably substitute it for 'possessed of a devil', the Scriptural diagnosis of insanity."

The use of 'bats' and 'batty' to denote odd behaviour originated around the same time as 'bats in the belfry' and they are clearly related. Again, the first authors to use the words are American:
1903 A. L. Kleberg - Slang Fables from Afar: "She ... acted so queer ... that he decided she was Batty."

1919 Fannie Hurst - Humoresque: "'Are you bats?' she said."

There have been several attempts over the years to associate the term 'batty' with various people called Batty or Battie, notably the 18th century physician William Battie. He was a governor of the Bethlem Hospital, a.k.a. Bedlam, and physician to St Luke's Hospital for Lunaticks, where he wrote A Treatise on Madness. Despite those illustrious credentials, it was bats rather than Battie that caused scatterbrained people to be called 'batty'.

    BANANAS

Hey . . . any one for a banana? Did you know that banana plants are the largest plants on earth that do not have a woody stem. Actually they're large herbs from the same family as lilies, orchids and palms. The banana plant grows from a rhizome or bulb. Each fleshy bulb will sprout new shoots year after year. The banana plant reaches its full height of 15 to 30 feet in about one year. The trunk of a banana plant is made up of sheaths of overlapping leaves tightly wrapped around each other like celery stalks.

Bananas are perennial crops that are grown and harvested year-round. Each banana plant bears only one stem of fruit, but best of all they have no fat, cholesterol or sodium.

The origin of bananas is traced back to the Malaysian jungles of Southeast Asia. There are now ovre 500 varieties. Can you name some of them? . . . Hmm let's see, Banana Bread, Banana Split, Banana Ice Cream...

...oops - sorry I got a little of track.

Please take a moment after you read this and say a prayer for all military and their families everywhere. This is a photo of Sharon's (Greene) Stannard's Father. So many times when we hear about our Military and what they are doing to keep us free, we tend to forget the enlisted ones before them. Even though those wars have been fought and won we would not have won without these kind and giving men and women. They gave their lives to the devotion of freedom for their people.

    Pray for Others

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her. We live in a sinful world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to sin. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily!

1 Timothy 2:1,2 says to offer prayer, supplication, intercession, and giving of thanks on behalf of all men. Yet we sometimes neglect to pray for others because we concentrate so much on our own interests.

How often do we think to pray for others, whether or not they request our prayers? Bible prayers are filled with requests and thanksgiving for people other than the one offering the prayer.
