Hi everyone! This weekend issue begins with continued thoughts and prayers for our members who may be living in the path of Hurricane Frances.

Hurricane Frances

Here are a couple more responses to the emails I have sent out:

  • Everyone at church Wednesday night prayed for anyone who might be in the hurricane path. I called my father in Tampa today and got no answer, will try tomorrow. I don't know if they left or not. Christine

  • Thank Goodness living in NY has blessed us...although I was scared on 9-11 out of my mind...I just didn't know what was next then....do you recall all of us chatting that day??Pami

  • Hi Sharon, I went thru the Hurricane called "Hazel" back on October 15, 1954. We lived in Washington, DC and of all things my sister Dottie got married that nite. It was an unbelieveable experience going thru that storm. Then recently we had Isabel last September 18th down here, but none of these storms are compared to what Frances will bring wherever it lands. So our prayers are really needed for our loved ones and friends in Florida. If the storm would decide to turn and come up the East Coast in our direction. we are prepared to leave if necessary.......

Marie and Garnett have a place in Florida don't they? Love, Lois

Thought a discussion some thoughts about "Attitude" that Pat, aka Bigsis wants to share with us might be appropriate. It is definately something to think about!

ATTITUDE

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearances, giftnedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...or a home. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice everyday regarding the Attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our Attitude. I am convinced that life is 100% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our Attitude.

  • August 28/04 - Dearest Sharon, I want to thank you and the other wonderful members of WWWCOF for your concern for Jordan. This truly takes a group of warm and loving people to think of a kindness such as this. I know Jordan and hid family will also be thankful. Love Charla Simmons

  • August 29/04 - Well, my Saturday has been pretty busy with canning tomatoes been doing that for three days. Supplies for the winter and family. Kids all work so when they stop over they go home with a supply. I also canned peaches and made strawberry jam and blackberry jam. next project will be apple sauce when that season gets here, which is October.

And now for my cookbook....Still working on that. All the recipes I received I have been cooking and tasting. Don't want anything going in the book that I don't like or have a taste for. My daughter would know right away that is not what I liked. I'm putting a pocket in the back of each section that these recipes will go in. She may like them. Of course we all have different tastes. Besides if someone took the time to send me a recipe, they deserve a spot in my book.

Hope your weekend is great. Carol in NY

The Tips Jar

  • Pat, aka Bigsis found out about this interesting program (AND IT'S FREE!) that allows you to copy several files from various folders on your hard drive to a "virtual basket". "A great time saver when you want to collect files for backup, sharing, CD burning and so on." As I will be doing major file copying/saving before I can reformat my hard drive, I thought this would be great.

Thought you might be interested in it too.

It is called Piky Basket and it is a handy utility that extends the copy/move capabilities of Windows by allowing you to collect files into a virtual basket, and then copy, move or paste them at once. It makes file management and organizing easier, rather just add all the files via the new Explorer right-click option (Add to PikyBasket) and then process them later.

This can be a great time saver when you want to collect files for backup, sharing, CD burning and so on. In addition, the program allows you to copy file paths to the clipboard and allows you to launch a command prompt from any folder. A nice add-on for Windows, that is there when you need it, and does not use up any resources otherwise.

  • Pat didn't mention this but when I went to download Piky I came across Quick Notes Plus 5 which create skinnable sticky notes on Windows desktop, set alarms, stick notes to documents and websites, send notes across network and much more.

    Newspaper Articles

    Tilbury Times - July/04

  • Recipes

GREEN CHILE STEW - (Chile Verde Con Carne or "Caldillo")

    • 5 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 1/2-inch pieces
    • 3 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
    • 3 stalks celery cut into 1/4-inch pieces
    • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
    • 2 tomatoes, chopped
    • 2 teaspoons meat seasoning (1/4 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon ground celery seed,
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt)
    • 1/2 cup prepared basic green chile
    • 1 pound beef stew meat or 1 pound pork butt
    • Water to cover
    • Salt and pepper to taste
Add stew meat to a large casserole and cover with water. Bring to a boil and remove any film or residue from the surface. Turn down to a simmer and cook for ten minutes. Add onion, tomato, celery, meat seasoning, and basic green chile and continue cooking over low heat, just above a simmer. When meat begins to become fork tender (about 1 hour) add carrots and continue cooking for 15 minutes. Just before serving, add potatoes, adjust seasoning, and serve when potatoes are cooked through.

and my whining in an email paid off; Maxine took the hint and sent me a recipe, sort of......

    Sliders aka Putsins

I really have no recipe .......just practice .... Every Sunday George's Mom made this great pot of Putsins [sliders] and the house was always full of people ......So it was a big pot....Anyway this is what went in it roughly.

Put on a nice big fat chicken or 2 and cook for about 1 hr [boiling in lg pot on top of stove] Remove chicken & mix:

    • 6 cups of flour
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 cup of cold water
    • 2 cup of chicken boullion[chicken broth] or powdered chicken broth.
Adding flour and/or water until the consistency of sticky pie dough.....flour board and roll out very thin ..........Cut into 1 inch squares ...bringing buillon to a rolling boil drop in putsin......stirring constantly or else it will stick to the bottom.....When they are all in pot cover and lower heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

Remember my email about all the cooking I did this past Saturday well I got this message from Christine that I would love to share with you.

I just looked at the recipes, thanks for the link. Here is one I don't know if you have seen:

    Elephant Stew

    • 1 Elephant
    • 2 Rabbits
    • Salt & Pepper
    • Brown Gravy
Cut elephant into bite-sized pieces. This should take about 2 months. Cover with brown gravy. Cook over kerosene for about 4 weeks at 465. Serves 3,000 people, if more are expected, add the rabbits.

    Have a good day! Christine

    The Reunion According to Daphne

Sharon's Memories of the Worldwide Circle of Friends Reunion 2004 in Ontario, Canada

    JUST FOR FUN - Obituary

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as:

    • knowing when to come in out of the rain,
    • why the early bird gets the worm,
    • and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that eating fast food every day would make you fat and decided to sue McDonald's.

  • Common Sense was preceded in death by
    • his parents, Truth and Trust;
    • his wife, Discretion;
    • his daughter, Responsibility;
    • and his son, Reason.
    He is survived by two stepsisters;
    • Mya Rights and
    • Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

SANTA ROSA STORM: Truths and myths.

At this time of the year ( in most of Argentina) in is common to hear talks of "the Storm of Santa Rosa". At a popular level it is usually said to happen a few days before or after the 30th August, associated with the holy day of Santa Rosa de Lima (Peru) Patron Saint of the Americas, existing at the same time, the belief that it is one of the worst storms of the year.

What is Myth and what is Reality?

The Storm of Santa Rosa is nothing more than the first storm to take place in our latitudes at the end of winter, between the last week of August and the first week of September. According to the International Meteorological terms the word "storm" signifies the sudden discharge of atmospheric electricity which shows as lightening flashes and the deafening noise of thunder. The storms are associated with convective clouds (cumulonimbus) and accompanied by heavy downpours of rain and in some cases snow or hail, as well as strong winds.

During the winter, storms don't usually happen, because, for them to develop certain atmospheric and energetic conditions are needed that are more appropriate to spring and summer. Nevertheless, on nearing the spring Equinox of the Southern hemisphere (22nd or 23rd September) the steady nearing of Earth to the sun, raises the availability of energy of the Terrestrial Climatic System, producing important changes to the regional atmospheric circulation towards the end of August. The presence of warm humid air from the north added to the solar radiation on the ground and the entry of synoptic turbulences from the west, can give way to the appearance of storm phenomenal towards the end of winter, in dates near the end of August, the day of Santa Rosa de Lima. These turbulences happen due to the fact that the Pole is still very cold while a greater part of the country begins to warm with the nearness of spring. If the storm of Santa Rosa is popularly expected to be worse than any other, there is nothing to base this on.

The following table shows the results of an analysis of the frequency of the appearance of storm phenomena in the city of Buenos Aires in days give or take five days from 30th August on a base of observations made between 1861 and 2003. The method considered was counted as of the first day the storm was observed counting the number of consecutive days with storm or heavy rain until the end of the period. The result of this analysis shows that only in 16 occasions during more than a century of registering, did storms happen in the days around the date of Santa Rosa de Lima

    • 1870 30/8 28.0
    • 1876 29/8 & 30/8 73.0
    • 1922 29/8 to 1/9 80.3
    • 1923 27/8 to 3/9 89.5
    • 1942 31/8 to 2/9 98.4
    • 1956 29/8 to 31/8 96.7
    • 1959 30/8 to 1/9 55.1
    • 1983 26/8 to 31/8 59.8
    • 1986 29/8 to 3/9 67.9
    • 1992 29/8 to 2/9 54.3
    • 1993 30/8 to 1/9 49.4
    • 1994 31/8 to 2/9 39.5
    • 1996 25/8 & 26/8 22.0
    • 2001 26/8 & 27/8 59.0
    • 2002 28 /8 12.6
    • 2003 3/9 to 7/9 87.6

It is important to point out that the so called " Storm of Santa Rosa" does not affect the whole country. So, provinces like Salta (north) or Mendoza (West), rarely get this phenomena. On an international level, it frequently happens in Uruguay, and there are registers of something similar being observed around these dates in South Africa and Australia

Buenos Aires, 25 de agosto de 2004
    DEPARTAMENTO CLIMATOLOGÍA

    Daphne's note:

Be it true or not, almost every year we expect the Storm of Santa Rosa here in Mar del Plata. It can be a solid week of bad weather, or it can be the briefest but most intense hail storm, but in general it marks the end of the cold weather and the start of the warmer weather. This year was no exception. Today 1st September it dawned very overcast, and started pouring before 8.30. Mid morning the downpour was accompanied by thunder, and at midday it was as dark as the moment before dawn, a brief intense hail storm, and then the skies opened and dropped more water in a few minutes than usually falls all winter. The skies cleared briefly then it clouded over again. Santa Rosa has said "present".
