Hi everyone!

Since this has been a terrible year for hurricanes, Daphne thought it would be interesting to see how they get their names.

The origin of Hurricane names:

It’s the history of almost a century of finding the best way to identify hurricanes. In the beginning, those that affected the Caribbean area were baptized with the names of the Saint of the day they happened. After that and up to 1950, the military meteorologists gave them numbers. It was as of 1953 that they started being given female names, in alphabetical order, therefore the first of the season always carried the letter “A”. Feminist protests managed in 1978 to have male names used as well. At about the same time, the World Meteorological Organization chose those that were common to the English, Spanish and French languages. These days, there are six lists of 23, “Z” is never used and these lists are rotated e.g. the group of 1997 was again used in 2003. But there are some names that never get repeated…… those of hurricanes that leave a lot of deaths in their way. So hopefully, Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne will not be used again.

We can read about how hurricanes are formed here.

  • We had some one from the government today looking at all the damages and they're going to help with expenses. Marie and Garnet waiting on the insurance man to tell them what they're going to do for them. The longer they [ins.] the more damages they will have. I'll send you some pictures. Some of Marie's and mine. Love Florida Marie

  • We are getting rain effects (lots of rain) from Hurricane Ivan. Thank God we are not in a flood zone, we are on a plateau and the rain just rains down hill. Fran

  • We had a great week- end. Both front yard and back yard all most cleaned up and we can now see the road. With the help of my son Kevin and and Chala's son Bobby. My son Kirk fell and cracked 2 ribs and lot of pain a he got a rupture near the belly button.

Marie and Garnet ,Charla, and Charlie and myself all got together here at my place. We had a great time. Marie and Garnet getting a break from there ruins. Also Charla's son Bobby and wife.

Ins. hasn't made it to Marie's yet .Ins. inspecters are so busy. If they have to change sizes of their trailer Garnet said he's going to repair the one thats damaged. LOTS and Lots of that work and will need help. Garnet is like Charlie just won't stop working and I have big worries about them. Charie's 74 and Garnet a heart patient. But can't try to reason with them two. Both so darn hard headed. So both Marie's sit here worried to death.

    Love Florida Marie

  • The hurricane didn't do much damage here where I live in Nassau, Bahamas. It did a lot to the other family islands. Grand Bahama where my mom lives got hit strongly. They have no lights as yet in certain parts of the Island. My mom's home didn't have much damage and everyone is just glad to be alive. Thanks for being concerned. Please keep the Bahamas in your prayers. Over 1,200 houses on the Grand Bahama have been destroyed. That is about 4 people to a home. You are looking at about 4,800 people left homeless. It is a sad situation. The economy is already suffering there. There are thousands of people out of jobs now because they had to close down one of the major hotels because of the damage it left behind but we are a praing nations, so we will be okay. Sheena

  • Marie, aka Peachy and I visited on MSN briefly on Wednesday morning. She and Garnet are down in Florida but they have not heard from the Insurance Company yet. She did want to thank us so very much for all our prayers and thoughts.

A very special message from a very special person:

Hello every one thought I sit down and write a few things that been happening to me in this last several months.

June 1 and 2 I had surgery to help me lose weight and we have been doing great. So far have lost 110 pounds, 10 inches off waist, 12 ½ off hips, drop from a 6 X to 3 X and my body mass drop from 72 to 57. I am feeling great and getting around so much better now. It is wonderful to experience so many new things and some old things that I hadn’t been able to do. I am driving a car again and feel like a teenager with her first car. I feel so good to be able to run errands again.

George father as you know pass away in August and we are just starting to deal with getting his estate settle. We have seen a lawyer and have signed lot of papers and finally have the renters out of his home so we can finally get in and clean it up and what a mess it is. We had to settle all of in Probate Court so it will take some time to get all finalize. Thank God for lawyers, if it wasn’t for Dave we wouldn’t have a clue what we suppose to do. I am so glad he is there to help us figure out all of it.

I belong to a Hospital Guild for Pennock Hospital in Hastings Pediatric Guild # 5 and we had our first meeting on Monday evening at Virginia home and elections were done for secretary, scrapbook, treasurer and president and I was elected President for the Guild. What an honor. This was our first meeting of the year since May. We take June, July and August off for the summer as all is so busy through those months and then start again in September. There is 12 women in the Guild and each of us hold a meeting I am schedule to hold the March meeting. We also have a Christmas party in December to be held at Janet place and a Picnic in May to be held at Diane home. We also do a secret pal for all the seasons, birthdays and anniversaries. I don’t have a secret pal this year as I wasn’t able to attend any thing last year because of my health. So come Christmas we will draw new names and I will put my name and get in on the secret pal gifts again. We have such a lot of fun with secret pals. We do bake sales twice a year one in April just before Easter on Good Friday and one in November just before Thanksgiving. We donate all our earning from these sales to buying socks for the newborns, bunting outfits for the newborns, and any small equipment that is needed for Pediatric and O.B. We do tray favor for the new moms. Have over the years donated, rocking chair, baby scales, chair covers, toys, videos, and much more. At least twice a year we have a white elephant sale and all of us bring goodies from home that we might put in a garage sale and man what a riot we have when we hold one of these. Every one get silly bidding on the things. All is wrapped so you don’t have a clue what your bidding on till it become your when your the highest bidder. One of the worse bid I got was a 5.00 brick. lol!! I have been with the Guild # 5 for 33 years this year and I have earned over these years for all my volunteered work 5500 hours and pins for each 500 hours I earn. I love belong to this Guild and for the good cause for earning money for it.

As you know several of the ladies came from the Circle for a reunion and some came to my home in Michigan. What a joy that was for me and my husband.

I was able to walk through all the craft booths at the Summerfest in August with two of my three sisters Linda and Mary and then we all went to Fall Creek a nice restaurant in our home town and had supper together. I got several nice things for my grandkids at the Summerfest.

Then the last Tuesday of August my husband George and I went to Mendon and pick up a friend (Sandy) of ours and then went on to Shipshewana and did an all day shopping spree and was able for the first time to keep with her and George is was a great time. We went a nice restaurant in Shipshewana and had Amish lunch. Went to Middlebury to the Amish Cheese Factory and didn’t get out of there with out buying $17.50 of cheese. lol my husband love cheese. We then went to the Smoke House and brought some turkey jerky and boy was that yummy. Some had just come out of the smoker so the owner let us try some and it was so good.

I certainly enjoy all the shops and ended up spending more then I had plan on lol but I did found me a homemade full size Amish quilt for my camper for only $20.00 I was so happy with my find.

Well can’t think of much more at this time but just to say what a wonderful group of people all of you are and I am so happy to be a part of this wonderful circle.

Love from your very own Swap Queen Ruth

"Children's Handbook"

For those with No children - this is totally hysterical!

For those who already have children past this age - this is hilarious.

For those who have children this age - this is not funny.

For those who have children nearing this age - this is a warning.

For those who have not yet had children - this is birth control.

Fender Skirts

I'm sure some of you will remember these things even though you may not want to admit it

What a great blast from the past! I haven't thought about "fender skirts" in years. When I was a kid, I considered it such a funny term. Made me think of a car in a dress.

Thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.

Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you.

Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."

I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed."

Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house?

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.

"Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "worldwide" for granted. This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply "expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now. "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all.

It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a whisper -"divorce." And no one is called a "divorcee" anymore. Certainly not a "gay divorcee." Come to think of it, "confirmed bachelors" and "career girls" are long gone, too.

I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation.

Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffeemaker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "ElectraLuxe." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening their kids with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most - "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. Shirley

Tips & Recommendations

Sharon, as you know I use Excel all the time and love that program. However, One thing that always frustrated me was if I had centered something across several cells I could not later add another column without going back and unformatting what I had centered. Then I could add a column and go back and center again. I recently found out that if, instead of highlighting the cells you want to center across and then hitting the center icon, if you highlight the cells then go up to format and center that way then you can still add or delete columns whenever you want. This tip may help someone else. Shirley

Arlene sends us this Good motto to live by ....

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!"

    Apples

From Adam and Eve to Isaac Newton, the apple has inhabited our folklore and our diets for centuries. This crunchy fruit dates back nearly 3,000 years to the wild apples that grew in the earliest orchards. These days, there are more than 7,000 varieties worldwide, though only a handful make it to your local fruit stand. Apples are simply delicious and surprisingly versatile. Enjoy a beautiful autumn weekend by going apple picking, then bring home your bounty and make some delectable treats. Try our Crunchy Appleslaw - you can change the flavour by using different varieties of apples. We've even included a handy apple guide to keep you crunching and munching throughout the season.

Take a minute to view Kraft Canada's Guide to apples.

Do you have an apple recipe for us to enjoy? We would love for you to add it to all the wonderful recipes being collected in the WWWCOF Cookbook or email The Recipe Lady aka Claudia who will be happy to add them for you.

Clearly no need exists for a detailed explanation of how to tie this knot as the illustration is, to say the very least, self-explanatory. David

Here is a quickie, for those of you that do fall decorating, go to the dollar store and buy the copper pot scrubbers, if you pull them out they make great embellishments for swags, etc, looks like copper ribbon, just did this yesterday 4 scrubbers for a buck…. I think they will look nice in the xmas tree also so I bought silver, hugs Liz and how about

how about Halloween lights for outside..... just take a can and punch holes in it, then paint it orange, you can paint a simple pumpkin face in black just the triangles for eyes and nose. You just drop in a tea light and it looks cute on the porch for Halloween. Some people fill the can with water and freeze it then punch the holes with an awl so the can doesn’t bend… I line my walkway with these and the lights are far enough down they cant catch on the kids clothing.

We start off with 7 letters: FPWFKOI

Then you make a sentence using these letters to begin each word.

for example: Frisky penguins were found kissing on ice.

Next you list the last letter of each word of your sentence:

    YSEDGNE

The next person makes a sentence up using these letters and so on.

    So for the next person:

    YSEDGNE

    JUST FOR FUN

    MAMMOGRAM

No matter what kind of mood you are in today....this one is going to make you laugh!!!! I laughed all the way through this one and even more when I got to the ending. Enjoy!

I know my memory is fading. I actually kept my mammogram appointment. I chose a seat next to a man and his wife in the waiting room. Both the chairs and conversations were so comfortable that before long I had totally forgotten why I was there and asked the man, "What are you here for?

Talk about a show stopper. Dead silence just as a Nurse Ratchet announced my name in her best baritone voice. I thought, Great now he has a name to match the idiots face? I rushed past the giggles and hurried after the angel of no mercy.

Rounding the corner, I was met with, "Hi! I'm Belinda." This perky clipboard carrier smiled from ear to ear, tilted her head to one side and crooned, "Alllll I need you to do is step into this room right heeeere, strip to the waist, thennnn slip on this gown. Everything clearrrr?" I'm thinking, "Belinda, try drinking decaf. This ain't rocket science." Belinda skipped away to prepare the chamber of horrors.

Call me crazy, but I suspect a man invented this machine. It takes a perfectly healthy cup size of 36-B to a size of 38-LONG in less than 60 seconds. Also, girls aren't made of sugar and spice and everything nice. It's Spandex. We can be stretched, pulled, and twisted over a cold 4-inch piece of square glass and still pop back into shape.

With the right side finished, Belinda flipped me (literally) to the left and said, "Hmmmm. Can you stand on your tippy toes and lean a tad so we can get everything?"

"Fine," I answered. I was freezing, bruised, and out of air, so why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck and finish me off?

My body was in a holding pattern that defied gravity when we heard, then felt, ZAP!! Complete darkness!!

    "What happened?" I yelled.

"Oh, maintenance is working. Bet they hit a snag," Belinda said as she headed for the door.

"Excuse me! You are not leaving me trapped in this thing are you?" I shouted.

Belinda kept going and said, "Oh, you fussy puppy the, doors wide open so you'll have the emergency hall lights 'til the power comes back on. I'll be rightttt backkkkk."

Before I could shout, NO! she disappeared.

And that's exactly how Bubba and Earl, the maintenance men extraordinaire, found me, half-naked and parts of me dangling from the Jaws of Life.

After exchanging polite, Hi, how's it going, type greetings, Bubba (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off..

Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible. "Uh, yes, yes I did, thanks."

"You bet, take care." Bubba replied and waved good-bye as though I'd been standing in the line at the grocery store.

What felt like two hours later, Belinda breezed in wearing a sheepish grin and making no attempt to suppress her amusement, she said, "Oh I am sooooo sorry! The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! And silly me, I went to lunch. Are you upset?"

"And that, Your Honor, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps."

We close off this week's edition with an email message from Bigsis Pat:

I'm reading this book, called "Death on the river Walk", by Carolun G. Hart. The stting is in San Antonio, Texas (which is teeped in Mexican history and traditions.

Anyway, I'm reading along, when one of the male characters (of Mexican heritage) mentions that "many Hispanic families continue the tradition of "La Quinceanera" to celebrate a daughter's fifiteenth birthday!" He goes on to say, "This is a major family occasion, when a young girl is presented first to God in thanksgiving and then to society as her life as a young woman begins."

Well, you can imagine my surprise, so I did a search on the internet and found these two sites (two of many, I might add). I thought it would interest you, as we did a scaled down version of this wondeful celebration for Chelsea at the Reunion.
