Hi everyone! This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
The first North American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1578 when the English Navigator, Martin Frobisher, held a formal ceremony in Newfoundland. He did this to give thanks for surviving the long sea journey, and other settlers arrived in Newfoundland, and the tradition was continued by them.
In 1879, Parliament declared November 6th a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Over the years this date changed, and on January 31, 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed".
Most families in Canada celebrate Thanksgiving with a special dinner for family and friends. The dinner usually includes a roasted turkey and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to look at pioneer life, and it is an ideal time to celebrate the importance of Canadian farmers for all Canadians.
Many families use to have special meal, and go around the table expressing their thankfulness for during the past year. It is a special day for children to spend with their Canadian grandparents, and to appreciate the abundance in everyone's lives.
Many friends and family members use to get together to convey their thankfulness for the past year.
Also coming up on Sunday, October 10th is Mother's Day in Argentina so a very Happy Mothers Day to all our wonderful members in the Argentinian Chapter of the WWWCOF!
I recently stumbled across this informative website about Argentina that I thought you would enjoy!
Be sure to read all about these and many other interesting October happenings on the Celebrations Trivia Page.

Last Saturday I packaged up a cute little teddy bear and sent it off to Jordan from Canada! I hope it brings a smile to his face. His new little "friend" will arrive with a wardrobe too....a sweater for Halloween, one for Christmas and a lovely USA Flag one. I hope someone takes a picture of Jordan with this delighful little bear so we can publish it in the newsletter or on PhotoIsland.
Has anyone else sent off a teddy bear to Jordan?

- Rosina shares these thoughts:
Mike and Joan were having some problems at home and were giving each other the
"silent treatment".
Then Mike realized that he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 am for an
early morning golf match with some buddies.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and so lose the "war"), he
wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 am."
The next morning Mike woke up, only to discover that it was 9:00 am and that
his friends would have left for the golf course without him.
Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't awakened him when he
noticed a piece of paper by the bed.
The paper said "It is 5:00 am. Wake up."
Men simply are so not equipped for these kinds of contests!

Crochet Clown
Do you remember this cheerful clown? I think Paton's came out with the pattern so very long ago. It is a great bazaar or country fair item that works up quickly and is a great use of all your leftover wool.
Use a 6 mm (US J or 10) crochet hook. The more colours you use the prettier the clown but do be use to use at least 3 different colours.
Body Circles: Chain 6. Join with ss to form ring. Chain 3 * YOH and draw up a loop through ring as high as the Chain 3 (YOH and draw through 2 loops) twice. Repeat from * 23 times more. Ss in top of chain 3. This should make a circle approximately 2 3.4 ins (& cm) in diameter. Darn in ends.
If you are using only three colours make 20 circles with your main colour and sixteen of each of the other two. Fifty two little circles in total -- I find it looks the nicest if the circle at the end of each arm, the end of each leg and the top of the neck (just under the head) are all the same colour.
Head: With a light cream, beige or white chain 3. Join with ss to form ring.
- 1st round: 6 sc. in ring.
- 2nd round: 2 sc in each sc of previous round.
- 3rd round: *2 sc in 1 sc, 1 sc in next sc.
Repeat from * to end of round.
- 4th round: *2sc in 1 sc. 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc. Repeat from * to end of round.
- 5th round: *2 sc in 1 sc. 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc. Repeat from * to end of round.
30 sc in round.
- 6th round: 1 sc in each sc of previous round.
Repeat 6th round 7 times more.
- 14th round: *Draw up a loop in each of the next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook, thus decreasing 1 sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Repeat from * around and around until about 12 sc remain in round. Fasten off. Stuff lightly. Gather up hole and sew firmly.
Hat: With one of your bright colours chain 3. Join with ss to form ring. Working 1 round even after each round to make work pointed, work lst, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th rouonds as given for head. Work 1 mor round even on the 30 sc. Turn and work 3 rounds for brim. Ss in next sc. Fasten off. Sew to head on a slant.
Embroider face (eyes, news and mouth). Only takes a quick couple of stitches to create the eyes, nose and mouth.
To Make Up: Cut 2 pieces of elastic, one 10 ins. (25 cm) long for arms, the other 15 ins. (38 cm) long for body and legs. Mark centre of each piece and sew together, then sew firmly to head. Threading on the circles. Thread 3 over the 4 ends for the neck. 10 over each sorter ends for arms. 9 over both long ends for body and 10 over each remaining ends for legs. Sew buttons to each end of elastic to prevent slipping.
I hope you have fun making these joyful little clowns. You could even colour co-ordinate them to suit the season. Reds and greens for example for Christmas, Oranges, Browns and Yellows for Halloween and pastels, mauves, pinks etc. for Easter, etc etc.
Abbreviations
sc= single crochet; yoh = yarn over hook;
st = stitch; in(s) = inch(es); cm= centimetre;
mm = millimetre; g = gram; ch= chain; ss = slip stitch

Members Questions & Answers
Q: Cranberries? What are the health benefits?
A: Last week in one of our MSN Messenger chats the topic of Cranberries came up.
A growing body of medical science reseach is revealing that cranberries do indeed play a very important role in keeping your body healthy; particulary in maintaining urinary tract health.
In partnership with the National Kidney Foundation, Ocean Spray launched a public awareness campaign to bring you the most recent findings on urinary tract health. For more information and helpful tips, call the Ocean Spray Consumer Helpline (1-800-662-3263) to request a copy of this free brochure on urinary tract health.

Emails and Viruses
As you know my computer crashes on a regular basis because of viruses that I receive in my email box. I have noticed that a lot of you are still sending emails to multiple recipients in the "To" box.
Please, please, please DO NOT do this as you expose the recipients email address to all sorts of people you would never suspect!
The only way to send out email to multiple recipients is to put your email address in the "To" box and add everyone else's to the "bcc" box and then send it.
Try it PLEASE as it really does help to prevent the spread of viruses!

A little light relief from David
The Three Bears
Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table
and he looks into his small bowl. It is empty. "Who's been eating my
porridge?" he squeaks.
Papa Bear arrives at the big table and sits in his big chair. He
looks into his big bowl, and it is also empty. "Who's been eating my porridge?" he
roars.
Momma Bear puts her head through the serving hatch from the kitchen
and yells, "For Heaven's sake, how many times do we have to go through
this with you idiots?"
- "It was Momma Bear who got up first."
- "It was Momma Bear who woke
everyone in the house."
- "It was Momma Bear who made the coffee."
- "It was Momma Bear who
unloaded the dishwasher from last night, and put everything away."
- "It was Momma Bear who went out in the cold early morning air to fetch
the newspaper."
- "It was Momma Bear who set the damn table.
"It was Momma
Bear who put the friggin cat out, cleaned the litter box, and filled
the cat's water and food dish, and, now that you've decided to drag your sorry
bear-asses downstairs, and grace Momma Bear's kitchen with your
grumpy presence, listen good, cause I'm only going to say this one more time
'I HAVEN'T MADE THE DAMN PORRIDGE YET !!'"

I would like to close this week's newsletter with this very interesting article that I received from TerryLynn.
IRAQ - VERY INTERESTING - DID YOU KNOW?
- 1. The garden of Eden was in Iraq.
- 2. Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, was the cradle of civilization!
- 3. Noah built the ark in Iraq.
- 4. The Tower of Babel was in Iraq.
- 5. Abraham was from Ur, which is in Southern Iraq!
- 6. Isaac's wife Rebekah is from Nahor, which is in Iraq.
- 7. Jacob met Rachel in Iraq.
- 8. Jonah preached in Nineveh - which is in Iraq.
- 9. Assyria, which is in Iraq, conquered the ten tribes of Israel.
- 10. Amos cried out in Iraq!
- 11. Babylon, which is in Iraq, destroyed Jerusalem.
- 12. Daniel was in the lion's den in Iraq!
- 13. The three Hebrew children were in the fire in Iraq (Jesus had been in Iraq also as the fourth person in the fiery furnace!)
- 14. Belshazzar, the King of Babylon saw the "writing on the wall" in Iraq.
- 15. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, carried the Jews captive into Iraq.
- 16. Ezekiel preached in Iraq.
- 17. The wise men were from Iraq.
- 18. Peter preached in Iraq.
- 19. The "Empire of Man" described in Revelation is called Babylon, which was a city in Iraq!
And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots.
Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.
No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq.
And also... This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages...
The following verse is from the Koran, (the Islamic Bible)
Koran (9:11) - For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace.
(Note the verse number!) Hmmmmmmm?! God Bless you all Amen !
