  • I would like you to send this note on to all the dear friends in WWWCOF. Thank you all for being there with your prayers and support at this time of our hardship that we have had to face. I am very thankful that I can say I have friends all over the world. We are doing a little better now. My mother is the one who can not take much more hardship it has hit her like a rock. It hit us all like a rock but more so for my mom and I think it is her age that has done that. She is 76 and is getting up in age and I think she relizes that a lot of these things will happen. I myself am doing better. Today is a hard day for me because this was the day my cousin would have had a birthday. When we were all kids we would celebrate our birthdays together along with his sister we were all close on birthdays and what a time we had with our family. So please continue to pray for my family. God bless you all, Jayne WWWCOF

  • Hello All. Just thought I would let you all know that Bob has completed his 30 radiation treatments, and he will see the doctor at the clinic for a follow up. The cancer clinic will call us next week with an appointment. He seen the surgeon on Tuesday and he told him that Dr. Malak will be taking over as he is leaving to go to the States. He wished him well. We sure are going to miss him as he is a great surgeon. We just don't have enough here. I am hoping to get out and see Ellen this week, and we are hoping to go camping for the week-end. Will talk to you all soon. Love Ontario Dorothy

    I haven't got a clue.

But they won't be there much longer
    because I'm sending them to

Reader Feedback

  • I hate to say it but that Koran verse is nonsense.

    The rumour

A verse in the Koran, which happens to correspond to the date of the Attack on America, predicts that "the wrath of the Eagle" would be felt throughout the lands of Allah.

    The truth

    This is a hoax.

The quote is not from anywhere in the Koran (or Quran). Chapter 9 verse 11 actually says:

"But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and we make the communications clear for a people who know."

    Regards, David

  • Again you have amazed me with your knowledge of history and worldly things.... wow is all I can say... and as for the recipe for the candy bar pie..... a person would only be able to eat 1/10th of a gram to get the daily portion of sugar!!! wow. I think I won't make it for Clint!!! Love the newsletter! Cassidy Pat

  • Thank you so much for helping me put Argentina on the map with the excellent website you found.

I had also decided to write or translate a fresh series of articles about this part of the world, in the hope of getting it better known, at least among our members. This week's one is in fact finished but as the newsletter came out early, you'll have it in time for next week. I'm also interested in reading about aspects of areas where other members live, any interesting or unusual things, but maybe people who live there take things for granted, and it needs an outsider to "see" things. News & Announcements

As you know Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin 75 years ago. He also predicted that antibiotic resistance might someday become a serious public health threat.

Antibiotics are among the most powerful and vital medicines we have. Use antibiotics wisely and please remember that they are effective against bacteria, not viruses, and they therefore not efective against colds and flu. If we don't use antibiotics responsibly, we may lose these wonderful medicines.

Canada continues to be a world leader in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Please take a moment to visit the electronic knowledge centre for NIPA, Canada's National Information Program on Antibiotics.

I do hope you have enjoyed this newsletter, and I hope each of you have met new friends.

I would like to close this week's newsletter with this article on the llama that I received from Daphne.

The llama, queen of the Andes, conquers the modern world.

Since discovering its great qualities as a working animal, a companion, and a provider of prime material for the modern textile industry, and more recently as a supplier of food, the llama has begun a process of conquering the whole world. In fact they were the main supply of food for the primitive people of the American continents.

These animals have their center of origin in North America probable from 9 to 11 million years ago. These animals migrated to the south to South America, and the actual “guanacos” and “vicuñas” appeared approximately 2 million years ago, which are wild camels of South America.

The living area of these South American camels is mainly found in the high regions and plateaus of the Andes, distributed from the north of Peru to the north of Argentina, including the Andes regions of Bolivia and Chile. In general these camels can live anywhere from sea level to the plateau Andes of over 5,000 meters above sea level. The “vicuña” and the “alpaca” prefer the higher places while the “guanacos” and the llamas can live at sea level.

Production of the fibers: The fiber is the main product from the farming of these animals and the fiber from the llama is the most used and is considered today by the textile industry to be considered of a similar quality to that of the “alpaca”. The wool is chosen from animals of adequate feeding which can produce 2 ½ to 3 kilos of fiber a year, with a gain of 90% after washing. The classical colour is light to dark browns, with the occasional cream or black, the sheering being done once a year.

The meat: the meat is similar in appearance to cows meat, but the fat, which is white, has ten times less cholesterol than that of lambs or cows, and it also has a higher protein content, therefore its consumption is considered to be a lot healthier and more recommended.

Adapted and translated by Daphne from this site.

Athough I live in a modern sea side city, my husband comes from an isolated mountain village in the Andes, so I have seen many of these animals both in the wild and in pens in the Andes mountains. Their wool is very soft to touch, and their meat is in fact paler than cow’s meat and is very tender. I have also seen them used as cargo carriers, carrying baskets of stuff from one mountain village to another, or carrying goat (or even their own kind) meat, opened and starting the drying and salting process used to conserve it in the isolated mountain areas, while under transportation. I have also seen these animals in holiday areas around this city, but in this case they are used more as a tourist attraction “to have your picture taken with” (at a price) than the use they have in the mountains.
