Bigsis Pat from Ontario, Canada sent along for us.

Coping with Holiday Stress
The holidays can be fun, but they also can be a source of great stress — and no wonder. The holidays are often depicted as a magical time when people reconcile and dreams come true.

How Can You Deal With Continuing Family Problems During The Holidays?
Being realistic is the first step. If you have bad feelings about someone, try and avoid him or her and not make an issue of it but don't pretend that all is well. This will enable you to feel true to yourself and less stressed out.

Do Financial Pressures Stress People Out to the Point of Ruining the Holiday Spirit?
Knowing your spending limit is also a way to relieve holiday stress. People believe that they have to go out and buy gifts because it's the holidays, even if they can't afford to do so. Not only is it stressful to feel that you have to buy everyone an expensive gift, but you'll be stressed for the rest of the year trying to pay off your bills. You can show love and caring by getting something that you know is meaningful and personal for that person that doesn't have to cost a lot.

How Do Time Pressures Affect People Around the Holidays?
People shouldn't have to put their lives on pause or totally rearrange their schedules either because of the holidays. Learn to prioritize the invitations you accept and don't feel that you have to go to every holiday gathering.

How Does a Person Deal With the Holidays When He or She Has Just Experienced A Recent Tragedy, Death or Romantic Break-up?
If you're feeling really out of sorts because of any chronic or current stressors, like a death or recent romantic break-up, you may want to avoid some of the festivities because they are so out of sync with how you're feeling. Try to tell those around you what you really need, since they may not know how to help you, and ask for their understanding if you decline an activity.

How Do You Cope With Kids Who Want Everything For The Holidays and Have No Sense of What Things Cost?
Parents need to tell their children to be realistic. It is OK to say to your child that a certain toy is too expensive. And even Santa Claus has limited funds and has to choose what to give because he has a very long list. You can also tell your children that Mom and Dad and Santa Claus will try to choose the most suitable present for the child. Children have to learn that their wish is not someone's command and to curb their desires for instant gratification.

What Are Some Good Coping Strategies?
Take stock of your expectations and make sure they're realistic. Don't expect more of this time of year than of any other. Take a break from holiday music and television specials if you find that they're turning you into "Scrooge."

Most people dread the holidays because their inner experience is so different from what is being hyped. You should trust your own instincts and don't try to be what you're not. Keep up your normal routine and know that this day will pass too.

If, however, you are unable to shake what you think are "holiday blues" your feelings may not be about the holidays, but about other things in your life. If you need help in sorting out or dealing with this issue, a psychologist is a person with the training to help you do so. Call 1-800-964-2000 to get information about referrals.

CHRISTMAS DRIED FRUIT SWEET BREAD ROLL

Ingredients:

  • 30 grs fresh yeast
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 100grs (4 oz) butter
  • 500 grs (1lb +) Flour
  • 3 spoons of cinnamon
  • 100 grs (4 oz) sugar
  • 100 grs. (4 oz) chopped nuts
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 grs (4 oz) chopped almonds
  • 100 grs (4 oz) butter
  • 3/4 cup of milk.
Method:

For the dough; disolve the yeast in a 1/4 cup of warmed milk. Add a spoon of sugar and a spoon of flour and leave to ferment. Make a ring from the rest of the flour, and in the center add the eggs, the rest of the sugar and the butter at room temperature. Add the yest mixture and the the 3/4 cup of warmed milk and mix well.

Knead the dough to distribute the yeast and leave in a warm place to rise covered with a clean dry cloth until double its size. Knead again, and then roll out on a floured worktop giving it a rectangular shape.

For the filling, spread the dough with slightly warmed butter, covering the complete surface. Then sprinkle with the cinnamon, chopped nuts and almonds.

Roll up the dough, and place in a greased floured loaf tin. Leave in a warm place to rise again, then cook in a moderate oven for 35 mins.

Remove from oven, remove from tin, and when cool decorate with royal icing and dried fruits.

To make the royal icing, mix 300 grs (12 ozs) icing sugar with strained lemon juice, sufficient quantity to get a fluid consistency.

Note: This bread can be made up to three months in advance. Store without the icing wrapped in aluminium foil in the freezer bag. Leave to thaw at room temperature, and then decorate.

Ruby, our very own travelling mascot, has spent a while in Brazil with Graça and Talyta where she has been well accompanied. Although she will be sad to leave these lovely people, all good things must come to an end, and Ruby is anxious to start on her way again, and has been asking where she will be for Christmas. Does she have your name down? ANY names in the draw bag have equal opportunity of being picked, so hurry, hurry, hurry and get your name on the list before Sunday 27th November. Ruby, as most of you know, was born in Australia, travelled to Canada for the Reunion of 2004, moved on to Argentina, has visited several members throughout The USA and Canada, and has spent the last several weeks enjoying herself in Brazil. Where to next??

Ruby worries in case your name is not on the list to receive her, since she wants to go EVERYWHERE and visit EVERYONE in the Circle. She has asked me to add anyone who lets us know on here or by visiting her new online journal. You can read up on all her travels here or have fun playing her games.

  • I just got a martylyanga@hotmail.com added me to his or her messenger list and wants me to add them to mine. I just wanted to check to see if this person is a WWWCOF member. I'm a little leary of just adding anyone to my messenger list. I don't like to until I know who they are or how they got my email address. Just thought I'd check with you first. Thanks, Cindy from the USA

  • Hi all, just wanted to let you know that I will be leaving out today to go to Illinois to see my father for Thanksgiving. I will be gone until about the end of the month. I have gone digest so I won't miss a thing. I will miss hearing from everyone but will try to borrow a computer while I am up there. If I don't get to hear from ya'll and be able to answer til the end of the month, have a happy Thanksgiving. • Hi ya Sharon and friends. I'll have a look at the newsletter shortly, don't spill your coffee over the keyboard Sharon, it makes typing a sticky thing to do (sorry that is my whacky sense of humor, you say you were having a cuppa with msn friends ha ha). It rained yesterday for the first time since I've been here. I gave the garden a watering first and Daphne had to go out, Sorry Daph! I get use to taking the blame! Must say iM NOT MISSING England just the weather ha ha, I dont even know what is going on over there ... they may be in blizzard conditions as far I know but dont think so!! Well I'll catch up later, will write to who ever else has written, and I have my friends who are not in the group. Take care Sylvie. Do take a moment to view Sylvia visit to Argentina here.

  • Had a WONDERFUL time in Oregon visiting my daughter and grandchildren, for 10 days. Nancy's wedding was beautiful of course you know I walked her down the aisle; she was so pretty. It rained 98% of the time, but at least it held off during the wedding. The reception was held at Nancy's office in the conference room, at her exc, tex office. Portland sure has changed since I left 18 years ago, but as beautiful as ever. Bea from the Catskills

  • I trust my name and address is on Ruby's list ... She would have lots of company as there will be a breeding pair of cockatiels and their two little ones which are less than a week old. They are going to be hand-fed starting next week and would be well on their way to weaned by the time she gets here. With her stop here, she will also spend some time with our Chelsea. What do you think? I may not have been all that active, but it is mostly because I'm nursing along an old computer and trying to get myself ready for that same old surgery still not done. Love you - Blessings - Claudia from the land of Popeye

  • Our Thanksgiving was a mess. Our circuit breaker for our 220 burned out right in the middle of baking the turkey! I still had the turkey to finish, a ham to bake, sweet potatoes rolls and a few other things to cook. So we had to pack up and go to our oldest son, Bobby and Libby's house to finish cooking and everyone come there. It ended up a great dinner. Especially since Aunt Marie brought her wonderful "SEX CAKE" yep that's the name and boy it is scrumpious! We all ate it till we were almost unable to move! Hey Aunt Marie (aka Peachy) how about putting your recipe in the Christmas cook book? Charla from Florida

Las Vegas Casinos and Catholics

This may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas, but there are more Catholic churches there than casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshipers at Sunday services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed.

Since they get chips from so many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to collect the offerings. The churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in.

This is done by the chip monks.

Didn't see it comin' did ya?!?! Lena a Catholic from Ontario, Canada!
