  • Like to hear from you.
  • Love to see you soon.
  • Obviously I miss you.
I would like to start this week's edition off with this beautiful poem that
Charla from Florida's wonderful daughter-in-law sent her. Charla said she used all her kleenex!

"Our" Mother

You are the Mother I received
the day I wed your son.
And I just want to thank you, Mom,
for the things that you have done.

You have given me a gracious man
with whom I share my life.
You are his lovely Mother
and I his lucky wife.

You used to pat his little head
and now I hold his hand.
You raised in love a little boy
then gave to me a man.

Mrs. Robert C. Skeel

and then continue on with this ....

Here is my story of part of our trip to the northern provinces, with Sylvia, my sister My birthday was spent in a place called Humahuaca, right on the Tropic of Capricorn, and on our way to Leo's mountain village. We stayed in a holiday cabin that night and wondered why the person in charge had left us a mountain of blankets, since we had been travelling around in short sleeves all day. But come nightfall... boy, did we need them!!!! Humahuaca is a mountain area of coloured rock formations, in the Province of Jujuy. We stayed in a different place almost every night and did a total of 6000 kilometers (about 3,750 miles) in two weeks. In Leo's mountain village, Iruya, in Salta Province, where we spent four days, we took part in a curious festival, where they honour the souls of the dead. Each household makes up a batch of unleavened bread in different forms - doves, wreaths, crosses, wheat, animals etc and puts them on display with sweets, fruits, drinks and other food stuffs the person they are honouring liked in life. The priest goes visiting blesses all these offerings, then the families are expected to make the rounds and visit each family member, where they get given boxes full of the bread forms, and have to try the other foods and drink. Our rounds included six of the older family houses and we came away with two large boxes of bread forms and other foods which we could not eat. It seemed a very extravagent sort of festival, for a people who are not exactely in a position to give away, and my sister wondered why all the family members couldn't just get together and put on one joint offering for all the lost family members.

Sylvia has summed our trip up very well in poetry: She has also written a powerful poem about the effects a man-made reservoir has had on the surrounding area, but we need the photos to compare. Hopefully we'll have that soon.

Leo had deliberately chosen those two weeks, as he had not wanted to be in Mar del Plata for the time of the Summit meeting of the Americas. His work takes him all over the city and he didn't want to waste time with security measures and blocked streets. As it happens, the place where the rioting took place in Mar del Plata is a large commercial area, a couple of miles from where we live, and not too far from where Ruben has his apartment. Everyone knows the damage was done by a group of "hired vandals" and not independent groups or individuals. In Buenos Aires, (250 miles away) there had been similar rioting but there the damage had only been against businesses of US origen, while in Mar del Plata it had been every shop along a certain stretch of road whatever the origen of the business .... and most of them were local. Senseless!! In Salta city we did run into a numerous protest group, but they were pacific. Talk to you soon I hope, Daphne and Sylva

Colourful wooden nut crackers have long graced German homes. Carved and painted into the shapes of soldiers and kings, they were the inspiration for Hoffmann's much-loved Christmas story, The Nutcracker.

The wonderful aroma of freshly baked gingerbread is also a German holiday tradition that has influenced Canadian kitchens. Cap off an evening at the theatre in royal fashion with this exquisitely moist and flavourful loaf.

Nutcracker Sweet Ginger Walnut Loaf

  • 1 cup (250 mL) applesauce
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) molasses
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) corn syrup
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) round ginger
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp each ground cloves, salt and pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cups (150 mL) packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) canola oil
  • 1 cup (250 mL) chopped walnuts, toasted
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped candied ginger

Grease and flour an 8 inch (20 cm) square baking pan. Set aside.

In medium saucepan, bring applesauce to boil over medium heat. Remove from heat. Stir in molasses, corn syrup and baking soda. Mixture will bubble. Let cool slightly.

In medium bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, salt and pepper.

In separate bowl, beat eggs with brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in oil. Stir in flour mixture in three additions, alternating with two additons of the molasses mixture. Gently fold in walnuts and candied ginger. Pour into prepare pan. Bake in 325 F (160 C) oven about 45 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool on rack.

Option: Serve warm with whiped cream or dust with icing sugar. Makes 9 servings.

Single Black Female

This has to be one of the best singles ads ever printed. It appeared in "The Atlanta Journal."

SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good looking girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hand. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Call (404) 875-6420 and ask for Daisy. I'll be waiting ...

Ruby worries in case your name is not on the list to receive her, since she wants to go EVERYWHERE and visit EVERYONE in the Circle. She has asked me to add anyone who lets us know on here or by visiting her new online journal. You can read up on all her travels here or have fun playing her games. Meanwhile we'll continue adding anyone's name to the list who wants a visit from Ruby, and we look forward to hearing her adventures in Brazil.

Lena would also like to share this poem that she found online:

Dear Jesus,

I know you're watching over me
And I'm feeling truly blest.
For, no matter what I pray for,
You always know what's best!

I have this circle of e-mail friends,
Who mean the world to me.
Some days, I send and send.
At other times, I let them be.

I am so blessed to have these friends,
With whom I've grown so close.
So, this little poem, I dedicate to them;
Because, to me, they are the most!

When I see each name download
And view the message they've sent,
I know they've thought of me, that day,
And well wishes were their intent.

So, to you, my friends, I would like to say,
"Thank you for being a part
Of all my daily contacts."
This comes right from my heart.

"May God bless you," is my prayer, today.
I'm honored to call you 'friend'.
I pray the Lord will keep you safe
Until we write, again.

Amen

-Thanks for the welcome. I dont get to a computer very often as I have to go to the locial libary were I live, and that can some time be a longish way, also I have to pay. It's not a lot but if I dont have any change at the time it can be a bit of a nusiance only some times! I live in with my clients that I care for and only get 2 or 3 hours off a day and I find that because my computer skill are limited it takes me an age to think about going but don't let that put uou off!

My caravan(s) is the sort that you hook up to a car and go on hoilday in so space is a precious. I have to use campsite type hook up electricity and fill water (25 lts) barrels for my water supply. Gas is bottled which I have to buy from the sites shop, but I am happy! I have two caravans; a very basic small one for the summer and a much larger better one with central heating and hot water boiler (still have to fill the barrels and conect the pump) own shower and toilet (which I have to empty regulary). This is to me HOME, what more do I need? A bed to sleep in, a place to relax and somewhere to cook! If I so desire I can just up and GO.

I would like to have a cat or two or three or four OOOPs but work and lifestyle prevent that love so I enjoy the sun, the stars, the moon, the grass, trees etc. all of which is free and feed gods bird they too are free. Will close for now, whilst I'm here. I have unlimited computor use GREAT! Take care Sylvia from Jolly Old England but currently visiting with my sister, Daphne, in Argentina

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is ... We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear some thing red every Friday.

WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE! THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED---- SO WEAR RED! --- MAY GOD HELP AMERICA TO BECOME ONE NATION, UNDER GOD.

In this issue...

TerryLynn from Vancouver Island, Canada send us these 10 first place winners in the International Pun Contest:

1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

2. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says "Dam!"

3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

4. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says "I've lost my electron." The other says "Are you sure?" The first replies "Yes, I'm positive."

5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.

6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?", they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, " I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

7. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

8. These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, --- thereby proving that only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.

9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ...(Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good)..... A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

10. And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

Charla would like to introduce us to West Volusia, the non-Orlando, the non-Omigosh-isn't-this-what-we-left-home-to-get-away-from? Welcome instead to a region that lingers with its butter churns and sulkies - you know, those one-horse, two-wheeled carriages beloved in Currier & Ives prints.

A baker's dozen of small towns connects the region: North, West Volusia is the Fern Capital of the World. Odds are the flowers that you just sent your significant other came wrapped with locally grown ferns. South in the region at Lyonia Preserve you can whistle scrub jays down from their perches to alight atop your head (no fooling). Nearby, mediums offer readings in Cassadaga and just over a woodland trail is historic Lake Helen.Centering the region is DeLand, a Main Street community whose town pride is Stetson University, the state's oldest private center of higher learning. It's all about getting away, the way you'd like.

Then there is Daytona Beach which is north-centrally located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida. South of the city of Jacksonville by about 80 miles and north of Cape Canaveral by 60 miles, it is one of the closest coastal cities to the fantasy land surrounding Orlando. A beautiful spot especially at night with all the lights along the boardwalk.

All this and so much more to see in Florida so mark down the dates for Reunion 2006 on your calendars. This historic event will take place March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) to March 20th, 2006. Can't wait to meet you there!

"Listen to your heart ... follow your dreams ... enjoy the journey!"

Have an awesome day; take a moment to think of one of the members you have not met yet and take the time to email them and say hello and know that someone is thinking about you today too.

We all need friends. Friendship fills us with warmth and love. It is not confined to the young or the old, the rich or the poor, the little known or the public figure. Whatever our circumstances, we all need someone who will listen to us with understanding, pat us on the back when we need encouragement, and nurture in us the desire to do better and to be better.

Our Circle of Friends is brimful with understanding hearts that generate love and accomplishment. Belonging is being needed, loved and missed when you are away; belonging is needing, loving and missing those who are away. Our members are here to care for each other and to recognize one another's needs. May we always be sensitive to the circumstances of other members.

The World Wide Web Circle of Friends can indeed enlighten, enliven, and erich our jouney through life. So as I said at the beginning of this section take a moment to think of the members and take the time to email them and say hello from your corner of the globe!
