Lets start off this week's edition with some regional news directly from our Argentinian Correspondent, who is none other than our very own Daphne.

In April, the Residents Club for the people from Salta Province (N. Argentina) living in Mar dal Plata, organized a cultural act to celebrate a new anniversary of the founding of Salta city, something in fact that they do every year, and usually get numerous public attend. These pictures were taken from there, the first being 3 couples carrying out a traditional dance. The second is of male " malambo dancers" a dance that needs fast footwork and strong ankles. These men are wearing baggy pleated pants that fit into the special boots used for this kind of dance. These men are following the same choreography, but it is often done in turn, each in competition trying to do better than the one before. It is really lovely to watch. There were also folk singers present and a historian who gave a lecture on the foundation of Salta, as well as the showing of a brief video of the province. Hugs, Daphne.

Did you enjoy this????? Please take a moment to let Daphne know that ... sort of a hint to get more of the same, but shhh don't tell her, its our secret, lol.

Who will be so kind to provide our Regional News for next week's edition?

Remember last week I talked about the wonderful Book Review Club being run by our wonderful Barbara from Rockford, Illinois ... here is a sample review

I have recently finished a second reading of a book by Colleen McCullough (authoress of "The Thorn Birds"). It is a slightly futuristic story, but not of the far fetched type, set in 2032/3 when another ice age seems to be setting in, longer colder winters, short very hot summers, fuel is scarce, water has to be cared for, and the whole world over families are limited to one child. In places the whole towns have to be relocated further south in winter months and people are now no longer free to decide when and where to go. All these cause unrest and conflict and many suicides. The government decides to come up with someone who can help the people, by feeding several thousand names into the computers and giving them certain qualities to look for. Only one name is picked, neither specially religious, certainly not political, overflowing with charism. He gives them practical advice about their actual problems, goes amongst them on walking trips even in dead winter, and soon becomes idolized and messianic. His own health is deteriorating quickly but he isnt aware of it. The end is pretty dramatic with only a handful being aware of it, but he managed to change the desperate way the people were thinking. Daphne from Argentina

By the time I came back could hardly walk. Had my mom take me to emergency at the hospital and I fractered my knee cap. Can not put pressure on it. Now I'm home. Hopefully not to bad won't know till Tuesday. It's hard to sit at home. Also have new kitty. Washington Pat

  • Hello. We had nice weather for the May Bank holiday. I went out (for my meaga 2 hours off) with my camcorder (ask Daph about that) filming SPRING. I have of course missed some bits; ie daffildiles and othe early flowers in bud and at their best, frogs spawn rather than the tadpoles which was hard to film any way, but many of the trees are in beautiful blossem and breaking out in young leaf, I got some film of some sand martins but I haven't looked at what I've yet (probably a load of junk and only a few mins of anything decent. Im no professional by any standards.) I shall be leaving my post where I am currently working in two weeks time, to go to a different department of the same company to work in the comminuity, and HOPEFULLY get a better qualification, NVQ (s), 1 & 2 are Not Very Qualified 3&4 Now very qualified Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. I hope to in the not so distant future go to university to get a degree in Nursing. (Ruben is my inspiration, hope he can live up to it!) I think I am a role model to both my niece Lorrine and sis in law Jackie but not sure to what extent is good. My niece, fine she followed my footsteps in becoming a St John member, then went into catering (good for her ... I was into catering but couldn't hack it) and has taken my advise on other more on personal issues but my sis in law (?) I moved , Ken and Jackie moved, I got work in care (alway have worked in care) she does the same. I don't want kids; neither does she. I bought a caravan and live in it and they want a c/van. Now Im studying further and what do you think she wants to too ! mmmmm It a tough one. I will of course support her. ANYONE who betters their standard of education is good; but why the same subject as me why not follow her own instincts. Well I have only 6 mins left so will close for now, Oh I nearly forgot thanks for the post cards, where do I send mine? & and glad to hear that my raffle got to its destination ok. Take care Sylvie from Jolly Old England

Making smart food choices is as easy as following Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Canada's Food Guide is a great way to get all the nutrients needed to be healthy. The best part is that one can enjoy one's favourite foods. However, it is important to aim for variety and moderation. Trying foods with various tastes, textures and colours can give some punch to healthy eating. There is no such thing as good foods or bad foods - just smart food choices. The number of servings needed every day from the four food groups and other foods depends on a few factors such as age, gender, body size, and activity level. The right balance of food and activity helps to maintain a healthy body weight.

With reminders to:

  • Enjoy a VARIETY of foods.
  • Emphasize cereals, breads, other grain products, vegetables and fruit.
  • Choose lower-fat dairy products, leaner meats and food prepared with little or no fat.
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by enjoying regular physical activity and healthy eating.
  • Limit salt, alcohol and caffeine.
Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is not about looks.
A healthy weight can improve your well-being and increase your chances of living a healthy life.

Wax is not your friend!

CAUTION: Be prepared to laugh out loud...I laughed till I almost cried as I could just see this happening!

All hair removal methods have tricked women with their promises of easy, painless removal - The epilady, scissors, razors, Nair And now ... the wax.

My night began as any other normal weeknight. Come home, fix dinner, play with the kids. I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next few hours: "Maybe I should pull the waxing kit out of the medicine cabinet." So I headed to the site of my demise: the bathroom.

It was one of those "cold wax" kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the strips together in your hand, they get warm and you peel them apart and press them to your leg (or wherever else) and you pull the hair right off. No muss, no fuss. How hard can it be? I mean, I'm not a genius, but I am mechanically inclined enough to figure this out. (YA THINK!?!)

So I pull one of the thin strips out. Its two strips facing each other stuck together. Instead of rubbing them together, my genius kicks in so I get out the hair dryer and heat it to 1000 degrees. ("Cold wax," yeah...right!)

I lay the strip across my thigh. Hold the skin around it tight and pull. It works! OK, so it wasn't the best feeling, but it wasn't too bad. I can do this! Hair removal no longer eludes me! I am She-rah, fighter of all wayward body hair and maker of smooth skin extraordinaire.

With my next wax strip I move north. After checking on the kids, I sneak back into the bathroom, for the ultimate hair fighting championship. I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I apply the one strip across the right side of my bikini line, covering the right half of my *hoo-hoo* and stretching down to the inside of my butt cheek (Yes, it was a long strip) I inhale deeply and brace myself .... RRRRIIIPPP!!!!

I'm blind!!! Blinded from pain!!!! .... OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!! Vision returning, I notice that I've only managed to pull off half the strip. CRAP!!! Another deep breath and RRIIPP!! Everything is swirly and spotted. I think I may pass out ... must stay conscious ... Do I hear crashing drums???

Breathe, breathe ... OK, back to normal.

I want to see my trophy - a wax covered strip, the one that has caused me so much pain, with my hairy pelt sticking to it. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold up the strip! There's no hair on it. Where is the hair??? WHERE IS THE WAX???

Slowly I ease my head down, foot still perched on the toilet. I see the hair. The hair that should be on the strip. I touch. I am touching wax.

CRAP! I run my fingers over the most sensitive part of my body, which is now covered in cold wax and matted hair. Then I make the next BIG mistake ... remember my foot is still propped up on the toilet? I know I need to do something. So I put my foot down.

DANG!!!!!!!! I hear the slamming of a cell door. *Hoo-Hoo*?? sealed shut! Butt?? Sealed shut! I penguin walk around the bathroom trying to figure out what to do and think to myself "Please don't let me get the urge to poop. My head may pop off!" What can I do to melt the wax? Hot water!! Hot water melts wax!!!

I'll run the hottest water I can stand into the bathtub, get in, immerse the wax-covered bits and the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it off, right??? WRONG!!!!!!!

I get in the tub - the water is slightly hotter than that used to torture prisoners of war or sterilize surgical equipment - I sit. Now, the only thing worse than having your nether regions glued together is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of the tub...in scalding hot water. Which, by the way, doesn't melt cold wax.

So, now I'm stuck to the bottom of the tub as though I had cement-epoxied myself to the porcelain!! God bless the man who had convinced me a few months ago to have a phone put in the bathroom!!!!! I call my friend, thinking surely she has waxed before and has some secret of how to get me undone. It's a very good conversation starter - "So, my butt and who-ha are glued together to the bottom of the tub!" There is a slight pause. She doesn't know any secret tricks for removal but she does try to hide her laughter from me. She wants to know exactly where the wax is located, "Are we talking cheeks or who-ha?"

She's laughing out loud by now ... I can hear her. I give her the rundown and she suggests I call the number on the side of the box. YEAH!!!!! Right !! I should be the joke of someone else's night.

While we go through various solutions. I resort to scraping the wax off with a razor. Nothing feels better then to have your girlie goodies covered in hot wax, glued shut, stuck to the tub in super hot water and then dry-shaving the sticky wax off!!

By now the brain is not working, dignity has taken a major hike and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need Post-Traumatic Stress counseling for this event.

My friend is still talking with me when I finally see my saving grace.... the lotion they give you to remove the excess wax. What do I really have to lose at this point? I rub some on and OH MY GOD!!!!!!! The scream probably woke the kids and scared the dickens out of my friend. It's sooo painful, but I really don't care. IT WORKS!! It works!!

I get a hearty congratulation from my friend and she hangs up.

I successfully remove the remainder of the wax and then notice to my grief and despair .... THE HAIR IS STILL THERE ....... ALL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!

So I recklessly shave it off. Heck, I'm numb by now. Nothing hurts. I could have amputated my own leg at this point.

Next week I'm going to try hair color ......
Now thats funny . Notttttttttt

Looking out for you and your health! A public announcement message from our Smile & Chuckles Expert ... Rosinafrom Nova Scotia, Canada
