"MOTHER'S DAY"

This day is for Mother's everywhere. Most have been blessed by their Mother's all their lives. To them a Mother is someone, without realizing, that they take for granted.

She has been there all their lives, she carried them in her body and gave birth to them. She nursed them at her breast, she held them, rocked them, changed their diapers and taught them to walk. She kissed their boo boo's, laughed when they did the cutest things in the world. She worked day and night to make sure they had what they needed from material things to memories. She covered them as they slept, gave an extra kiss while checking on them. She never completely went to sleep because a part was always waiting to hear a sound that needed her. She cooked their favorite meals, made their clothes and Christmas gifts from her loving hands. When there was not enough dessert for everyone she decided she had enough to eat and didn't want any. When her clothes were tattered and her child needed shoes she sewed her tattered clothing and used the money for her child's shoes. Birthday's were extra special. She made their favorite meal and cake and it was "Just Their Day." She never missed a program at school no matter what time it was. She took her lunch at 9:00 am from work to make sure she was sitting there when her child came out on the stage. She gave them that look of Pride and Love. As they grew she became their friend as well. They could talk to her about anything and know she would not judge, but guide them in the right direction. She cried at their graduation, wedding and the birth of their child. This Woman is a Special and person inside and out. She certainly deserves a Day dedicated to Her. I Love and miss my Mother.

Although some of us were not that lucky and we were robbed of all the things Mother's do for their Children. So we grow up with a space in our hearts longing for the things we have seen around us. Some of us never find it. Some of us do. For me I believe when you find it, that person is MOM. Mom is the one who doesn't have to love you but does. She doesn't have to give you gifts on your special days, but does. She is there no matter what is wrong even though she doesn't have to be. She is your best friend. You can share anything with her and it is just between you & her. She never judges you, she might let you know every so often when you are wrong. But does it in a loving way. She understands when you are having a bad day and makes sure she checks on you. I am fortunate enough to have a MOM. She is a very Wonderful person to me. I Love her very much. We share, laugh and cry together. I wouldn't know what to do without her. I want to say "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY" to her with all my heart. I Love You Mom .... I want everyone to know Florida Marie ...... is that Woman. Your Daughter Charla.

Dynamite example of what a great group the WWWCOF really is and proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that there is no I in TEAM! Now all that being said please always remember to be considerate. Many of the members have voluntarily taken on to do tasks for the World Wide Web Circle of Friends and for this we can all be so very grateful. They do a great job but please remember that none of us are perfect and mistakes are made; sometimes things are overlooked or forgotten and that may hurt your feelings but this is never done intentionally. We each do the best we can do and that is all that can be expected. If something ever happens that upsets you ... tell us about it so we can put our collective heads together to correct the situation!

  • Hi .... Thought I would share with you a card I got from my son,Tad and family .... it is actually a Birthday Card but is also appropriate for Mother's Day .... I think this card I will be keeping for a lifetime:

    My Mother's Garden

    My mother kept a garden,
    a garden of the heart.
She planted all the good things
that gave my life its start.

She turned me to the sunshine
    and encouraged me to dream.
    Fostering and nurturing
    the seeds of self-esteem.

And when the winds and rains came,
    she protected me enough -
But not too much - she knew I'd need
to stand up strong and tough.

    Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong -
    Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.

    I am my mother's garden.
    I am her legacy -
And I hope today she feels the love
    reflected back from me.

It is a hallmark card but i dont know the author of the poem. Lots of love, Linda, aka forever from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

  • This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Mayer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's okay honey, Mommy's here."

Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying babies who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their blouses and diapers in their purse.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And all the mothers who DON'T.

This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see. And the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes. This is for the mothers whose priceless art collec tions are hanging on their refrigerator doors.

And for all the mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at football or soccer games instead of watching from the warmth of their cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see me, Mom?" they could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," and mean it.

This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery store and swat them in despair when they stomp their feet and scream for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who count to ten instead, but realize how child abuse happens.

This is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and explained all about making babies. And for all the (grand) mothers who wanted to, but just couldn't find the words.

This is for all the mothers who go hungry, so their children can eat. For all the mothers who read "Goodnight, Moo n" twice a night for a year. And then read it again. "Just one more time."

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home -- or even away at college.

This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school with stomach aches assuring them they'd be just FINE once they got there, only to get calls from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up. Right away.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can't find the words to reach them.

This is for all the step-mothers who raised another woman's child or children, and gave their time, attention, and love ... sometimes totally unappreciated!

For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their 14 year olds dye their hair green.

For all the mothers of the victims of recent school shootings, and the mothers of those who did the shooting.

For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who just came home from school, safely.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful, and now pray they come home safely from a war.

What makes a good Mother anyway?
    Is it patience?
    Compassion?
    Broad hips?
The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt,
    all at the same time?
Or is it in her heart?

Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time?

The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 A.M. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby?

The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 A.M. when you just want to hear their key in the door and know they are safe again in your home?

Or the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation ... And mature mothers learning to let go.

For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers. Single mothers and married mothers. Mothers with money, mothers without. This is for you all. For all of us. Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them. And pray.

"Home is what catches you when you fall - and we all fall."

submitted by Rosina from Nova Scotia, Canada.

In Canada from the 7th to the 13th May it is EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK This could well be worth making an International event, because emergencies happen all over the world, and so few people are prepared for them.
People generally know if they live in the shadow of a volcano, or in an earthquake zone, or their area suffers from climatic problems. But sometimes things happen "out of turn", mining, factory accidents etcetc, so it is never out of place to be prepared for when something happens in your area, in order to make it easier on yourself, your family, and those around you. Here are some useful guidelines:

Emergency preparedness guide

Original Source for Canada sent in by Sharon, representative of BC, Canada

If a disaster happens in your community, it may take emergency workers some time to get to you as they help those in desperate need. You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours.

By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies -- anytime, anywhere. This will help you to take care of yourself and your loved ones during an emergency.

Know the risks.

(Adapted from original)

Where ever you live in the world, you face a number of hazards, from earthquakes to blizzards. There are other types of risks, such as power outages, industrial accidents, major transportation incidents and the possibility of acts of terrorism. We need to prepare for all types of emergencies.

Prepare a kit
In an emergency you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. You should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
Not sure what to put in your kit? Find out what you need to get through 72 hours.
Basic Emergency Kit

What to do in an emergency
All of the above are direct links to the original site as the information varies so slightly from one world region to another, but the rules are valid everywhere.
I have also recieved an envelope of relevant stuff from our planet correspondant in England, Sylvia. Yes, the more people are prepared for this kind of emergency the better it will be all round. hugs, Daphne.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.
--Agatha Christie (1890 - 1976)

Cat Owners' Prayer

Because I'm only human,
It's sometimes hard to be
The wise, all-knowing creature
That my cat expects of me.

And so I pray for special help
To somehow understand
The subtle implications
Of each proud meowed command.

Oh, let me not forget that chairs
Were put on earth to shred;
And what I like to call a lap
Is actually a bed.

I know it's really lots to ask
But please, oh please, take pity;
And though I'm only human,
Make me worthy of my kitty!

Daphne, our Cookbook Queen normally chooses a recipe every week for us to try from our Circle's very own collection, which you can view here. Because this weekend is Mother's Day in many parts of the world, Daphne has chosen a recipe by one of the members who has sent in lots that Kids can do .... for their Mum!!

So This week's recipe for the next newsletter is:

Milisa's Almost Heaven Cake
WWWCOF COOKBOOK
Yield: 12 Servings

  • 1 prepared recipe of favorite bars
  • chocolate chip cookie dough
  • 2 Tbl margarine
  • chilled Whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 6 Cups whipping cream
  • 2 1/2 Cup chocolate chips
  • 12 - 14 packages of Kit Kat candy
  • 9 inch round cake pan and 10 inch spring form pan
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line bottom of 9 inch round cake pan with parchment or waxed paper. Press cookie dough in bottom to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake approximately 18 minutes or until slightly browned. Do not overbake. Cool completely or chill in freezer.
2. In a large bowl, put 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips and 5 cups whipping cream. Microwave on high for 4-5 minutes until chocolate is soft. Remove and stir well until chocolate and cream are mixed well. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight.
3. Melt remaining chocolate chips with margarine and stir until smooth. Place large cookie in center of 10 inch spring form pan. Cut candy bars long ways and dip on end in chocolate mixture. Place vertically between cookie and sides of pan. Continue until all candy bar pieces are used. Chill 15-20 minutes.
4. Whip cream and chocolate mixture until stiff. Do not over beat. Chop remaining candy bars into chunks. Take cookie shell and place mousse 1 1/2 inch thick on bottom. Sprinkle chunks on top. Repeat layers, ending with mousse. Chill in freezer overnight. Top with dollops of whipped cream and chunks of candy bar. Return to freezer.

When ready to serve remove from freezer and let stand in refrigerator 20-30 minutes before slicing.

A very happy Mother's Day to all those out there who are a Mum, will be one, have one or have had one. If you still have her, go visit her today with a special hug, or give her a phone call. If she is no longer with you, then send up a special prayer for her. Daphne, our Cookbook Queen.

Also those of you taking the Sourdough Starter challenge might enjoy this recipe of popular choice that I will be trying with my sourdough starter.

SOURDOUGH CINNAMON ROLLS Combine 3/4 cup fresh sourdough starter, 1/4 cup warm water, two eggs, 3/4 cup sugar (granulated or brown), 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 stick butter or margarine, melted and slightly cooled. Stir in gradually 2 to 3 cups flour, or enough to form a slightly stiff dough. Knead until smooth. Let stand, covered, until double. Roll out into a large rectangle, about 18" by 15". Melt 2 to 4 tablespoons butter, spread over the dough. Combine 1/2 to 1 cup brown sugar, 1 table- spoon ground cinnamon (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander or other spice). Sprinkle evenly over the dough. (Sprinkle 3/4 cup chopped nuts and/or raisins over the dough). Roll up tightly, starting at a long side. Seal the edge. Slice evenly into twelve slices. Place, cut side down, in a large greased baking pan. Let rise. Bake 20 to 25 minutes at 400. Cool on a rack. Drizzle with icing made from 1/2 cup confectioner's sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla (or lemon juice), 1 tablespoon milk, enough additional confectioner's sugar to make the right consistency.

Doesn't that sound good??? Do you think it is low cal!?

Please email Daphne with your personal "critique" of this recipe for publication in next week's newsletter.

P.S. We continue to accept favourite recipes and/or cookery tips to add to our cookbook so email your favourites to Daphne today!

NO MORE KIDS

After an overnight flight to meet my father at his latest military assignment, my mother wearily arrived at the Air Base with my eight siblings and me - all under age 11.

Collecting our many suitcases, the ten of us entered the cramped customs area. A young customs official watched our entourage in disbelief, "Ma'am," he said, "do all these children and this luggage belong to you?"

"Yes, sir," my mother said with a sigh. "They're all mine."

The customs agent began his interrogation: "Ma'am, do you have any weapons, contraband or illegal drugs in your possession?"

"Sir," she calmly answered, "if I'd had any of those items, I would have used them by now."

The official allowed us to pass without opening a single suitcase.

I would like to close with this email from Lena:

With Mother's Day around the corner, I couldn't help but pass this one on to all the mothers I know with a Big AMEN!

Too precious not to on pass on

Somebody said it takes about six weeks to get back to normal after you've had a baby.
Somebody doesn't know that once you're a mother, "Normal," is history.

Somebody said you learn how to be a mother by instinct ...
Somebody never took a three-year-old shopping.

Somebody said being a mother is boring ......
Somebody never rode in a car driven by a teenager with a driver's permit.

Somebody said if you're a "good" mother, your child will "turn out good."
Somebody thinks a child comes with directions and a guarantee.

Somebody said "good" mothers never raise their voices ...
Somebody never came out the back door just in time to see her child hit a golf ball through the neighbor's kitchen window.

Somebody said you don't need an education to be a mother.
Somebody never helped a fourth grader with her math.

Somebody said you can't love the fifth child as much as you love the first.
Somebody doesn't have five children.

Somebody said a mother can find all the answers to her child-rearing questions in the books.
Somebody never had a child stuff beans up his nose or in his ears.

Somebody said the hardest part of being a mother is labor and delivery .....
Somebody never watched her "baby" get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten ......
or on a plane headed for military "boot camp."

Somebody said a mother can do her job with her eyes closed and one hand tied behind her back.
Somebody never organized four giggling Brownies to sell cookies.

Somebody said a mother can stop worrying after her child gets married.
Somebody doesn't know that marriage adds a new son or daughter-in-law to a mother's heartstrings.

Somebody said a mother's job is done when her last child leaves home ....
Somebody never had grandchildren.

Somebody said your mother knows you love her, so you don't need to tell her.
Somebody isn't a mother.

Mother's Day is heralded far and wide and it is a wonderful celebration. Sunday brunches, roses by the dozen, spa day specials and breakfast in bed all help set aside the day to honor mothers. Yet for so many it is a day of unspoken pain.

If your heart hurts this Mother's Day, there are some things you can do:

  • Consider planting a rose bush if you have lost a child by miscarriage, death or abortion, in memory of that special little life.
  • Take a potted plant to a nursing home if you are missing your own Mom who is gone, or filled with regret for what you did not have with her when she was alive. Brighten some elderly mother's lonely day and let her know she is cared about.
  • Reach out to a child who is starved for the love you have to give.
  • Send a simple "I'm thinking of you" card to someone.
  • Invite a friend to a picnic in the park or to sit on your deck and drink iced tea on Mother's Day.
If you are stuck on inward and downward, talk to a trusted friend. Let this Mother's Day be different.
