IN THE GARDEN
Plant a lilac, and you plant a memory ... A lilac ... will lend your landscape the aura of nostalgia, the remebrance of springs and summers past.
TO DO THIS MONTH
Start this growing season by opening a garden journal to help you track plans, plant purchases, flowering times, garden visitors (human and wild), weather highs and lows, harvest times and yields, and even bird migrations. Use your journal for notes and add drawings, month-by-month photos, pressed flowers and leaves, feathers, plant tags, seed packages and nursery receipts.

Tips & Recommendations
Be Kind to Your Planet
Couple of tips for conserving water outside your home:
- Use a rain barrel to collect rainwater for watering your garden. Make sure the barrel is covered to discourage mosquitoes from breeding.
- Don't overwater your lawn and water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
Baking Soda cleans, deodorizes, scours, shines silver and is environmentally-friendly. Sprinkle on damp sponge and clean and deodorize the microvave, scour a bathroom and clean walls and furniture.
- To clean pots and pans shake a generous amount of baking soda into a pot with baked-on food; add hot water and dish detergent and let stand for 15 minutes.
- To shine your silver line a shallow pan with aluminum foil. Place silverware on the foil. Add a tablespoonful (15 millilitres) of baking soda. Pour boiling water over items to cover. Let stand until tarnish is gone (about 30 minutes), rinse and dry.

Senior exercise Just came across this exercise suggested for seniors, to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy, I thought I'd pass it on to some of my mature friends and family.
The article suggested doing this three days a week.
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb. potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, then relax.
Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb. potato sacks. Then 50-lb. potato sacks, and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb. potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.
When you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK
Fitness & Wellness
Kendra and I have joined a Fitness Club and are looking forward to enjoying becomming physicaly active and toning up our bodies. Will keep you updated on our progress. The Club we joined is an affiliate of Sisters Pace Fitness and it is located not far from Kendra's school and my work.
Picked up some Healthy Tips for the Month of March too:
- Whether you're going to the grocery store or heading to an appointment, choose walking or biking instead of driving for at least one of your errands.
- Make activity a social outing! Invite family or friends (or your dog!) to go on a walk with you in a local park, on the beach or around your neighbourhood.
- Sign up for a new recreational activity. Whether it's Salsa dancing, Ultimate Frisbee, Floor Hockey, volleyball or basketball, it will enhance your social life as well as your health.
- Buy a pedometer. Many models are available and it's a great way to track how much you are moving. You'd be surprised how quickly you are motivated to accumulate more steps today than you did yesterday!
- Need to exercise at home? Walk on the spot while watching your favourite TV show, or do sit-ups during commercial breaks. Every little bit counts!
- Choosing juice? Look for the words "100 per cent juice" on the label. If it says beverage, fruit cocktail or fruit punch it may offer little more than sugar and water.

- It's pretty cold here. 17deg. We are suppose to get snow but I hope the weathermen are wrong. I can say we are having a very sunny day.
I just had a birthday and you should have seen my house. I had so many flowers sent I thought I opened a shop. I had to put flowers up stairs just to make the down stairs look nice. Then the party was great. Sitting at the table blowing out 1 big candle my grandson age 3 wanted to know why only 1 candle when I'm old. We told him the fire truck couldn't make it down our street in case there was a fire. That little guy said" Tell me about it girls" Boy did we ever break out laughing.
Hope all is great with you. Carol from New York.

- What a morning! Just after my husband left for work I went downstairs to the basement ... and I noticed my 2 cats looking at the furnace. I could hear noise in the pipes ... flue. I knew it must be a squirrel or a bird trapped. When I had the furnace cleaned the furnace man told me he found a few burned up dead birds. I think the worst noise is hearing something trapped fighting for it's life. I did one thing my dad always taught me as a kid ... he always taught me how to turn the furnace off by the emergency switch. I turned off the furnace because the heat coming on would of killed what ever was there. My son had better ears than I did ... he noticed he heard it moving as I walked down the stairs. The trapped something? was now sitting on the shelf of the flapper for the furnace. The next thing we did was give it some air ... I wedged a pencil in the flapper to give it good air. I then went up to get a flash light ... another thing my dad taught me ... always have a GOOD powerful working flashlight .... he never believed in the dollar flashlights ... he had to buy the $20.00 kind that you could shine it on something and see it across the yard. I had a gut feeling it was a bird because a squirrel would of been making lots of noise ... all I heard was feet. When I shinned the flashlight into the flapper I could see a bird hanging on for dear life. Soon Alan came home and he put a bag over the flapper and unscrewed it ... the bird wasn't going into the bag so I reached in and grabbed the bird ... the poor thing was alive and alert ... it has soot on it ... and it's eyes looked dusty. I took the bird outside and watched it fly away. My husband now has a project in getting one of these things to put over the top so we our furnace will not kill anymore birds.
It was a good feeling knowing this bird made it out alive.

Wanted to share an accident that happened in our neighbourhood, please tell people, this is so dangerous. There is every weekend a race around here also in the sand pit down the street with dirt bikes. Well fnally, we knew some day someone would be hurt, as police have been called so many times. There was this couple man & wife and their 17 month old baby on a dirt bike; they seen police coming and started to race to beat them, while doing so they collided with another dirt bike with a 12 year old boy, so daddy went flying off dirt bike and is in critical condition, baby went flying off crushed his face, the 12 yr old boy had a broken leg, we had 2 ambluance 2 rescue trucks and many police cars here. So please if any member has a dirt bike OH PLEASE don't put a baby on it. We don't know yet how everyone is. Bea from Florida, USA.
Be sure to brush up on safety with your children. A good place to start is with a visit over to the Safe Kids Canada website.
