Roses
Growing and Pruning Roses.
- Cut at a 45-degree angle about 1/4 inch above outward-facing bud. The cut should slant away from the bud.
- Entirely remove all dead or dying canes. These can be identified as canes that are shriveled, dark brown, or black.
- When planting rose bushes, dig the hole deeper then the root clump, and in the bottom churn in plenty of well rotted manure or compost, chopped up banana skins.
- Plant garlic cloves among the roots of well established or newly planted rose bushes. This serves the double purpose of helping to keep them free from bugs, and to intensify the aroma of the roses.
- ROSES: in general = love and beauty

Petals Around The Rose
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO WORK THIS OUT!
Apparently the quicker you work this out, the less logical you are ............ enjoy! Think OUTSIDE the square .... Don't blurt it out to your mates when you know the solution. This can keep people stumped for months. Jeanette from the land down under.
Mid-Year Resolutions
It's already the midpoint of 2005. Did you accomplish everything you wanted to during the first half of the year? If not, there's still plenty of time to make some headway before the year is up. Here are 5 simple tips to help you start getting things done.
- 1) Set a goal a week. Rather than trying to get a million things done, which usually ends up in getting nothing done at all, set just one goal a week. Work on that goal a little bit each day until you've reached it, even if you're only able to work on it for 15 minutes each day.
- 2) Make it concrete. If you wait until you have time to work on your goals, that time may never come. You actually have to schedule time in your calendar or planner. For instance, if you want to work on your scrapbooking hobby each night, set aside the 8:30 to 9:30 timeslot each night to do so. If you want to organize the garage a little bit each day, set aside the hour directly before dinner to do so.
- 3) Don't keep it a secret. When you set goals, tell at least three people about them. Let these people know that these goals are very important to you and you'd appreciate any motivation they could send your way. Also, ask them to check up on you to help you stay on track. Just telling others about your plans may give you the incentive to actually work towards reaching them.
- 4) Don't beat yourself up. If you haven't reached your goal by the end of the week, no problem. Just continue working on that one goal the following week. As long as you're working on it a little bit each day, and progressing, you're a lot further than you were when you first set your goal. Once your goal is met, congratulate yourself and set another goal for the following week.
- 5) Reap your rewards. For every goal you set, also come up with a pending reward--something you enjoy only when your goal has been met. For small goals you've accomplished, appropriate rewards may be sipping a cool iced tea in your backyard, listening to your favorite CD or spending 10 minutes on the telephone talking to your good friend. For larger goals accomplished, appropriate rewards may be buying yourself a new outfit, going to the movies, or even taking a vacation!
How to make a rose potpourri
Gather up your rose petals on a dry morning, once the dew has evaporated. In dry climates, leave to dry two days in the open air in a low basket. In damp climates dry them indoors, either in a shallow tray sprinkling them with a layer of baking soda, or in a screw top jar, a few petal, a little baking soda, a f ew petals a little baking soda and so on. This method takes several weeks, and the jar has to be gently shaken every three or foue days. They go brown and leathery and do not break up easily, and they have a much more intense perfume than petals dried in the open. By drying openly the petals are brittle and can be crumbled easily and they do loose a little of their colour.
Use your petals, either alone or mixed with lavander, cloves or cinnamon sticks in a pretty open container, or in any perfumed potpourri projects. A drop of rose essential oil can be added to intensify the aroma.

Recognizing a Stroke
Susie is recovering at an incredible pace for someone with a massive stroke all because Sherry saw Susie stumble - -that is the key that isn't mentioned below - and then she asked Susie the 3 questions. So simple - this literally saved Susie's life - - Some angel sent it to Susie's friend and they did just what it said to do. Susie failed all three so 911 was called. Even though she had normal blood pressure readings and did not appear to be a stroke as she could converse to some extent with the Paramedics they took her to the hospital right away. Thank God for the sense to remember the 3 steps!
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander may be able to recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
-
**Ask the individual to SMILE.
- **Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
- **Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE.

Stuffed Peppers
This quick (30 minute) and easy recipe is perfect for a quick and healthy meal for two -- and a good way to get your meat, veggies and starch on the table all at the same time.
Ingredients
- 4 large, green bell peppers, tops removed, cored and seeded
- 1 cup rice
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3/4 pound lean ground beef
- black pepper to taste
- 16 oz canned diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Add peppers and cook for 10 minutes. Drain, remove from pot and set aside.
- While you're waiting, cook the rice in a saucepan or your microwave according to package directions.
- In the meantime, in a large pan, cook the onion over medium heat until browned--about 10 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the onions, breaking the ground beef into small pieces with a slotted spoon and mixing it in with the onion.
- Add black pepper to the ground beef to taste.
- Add the diced tomatoes to the ground beef. Cook over low heat until rice is ready.
- When rice is done, add it to the ground beef and stir well so that everything is mixed together.
- Place each of the bell peppers in a baking pan, standing up. Fill each bell pepper with the ground beef and rice mixture. If you have leftover ground beef, just add it to the baking pan around the peppers.
- Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Remove pan from oven, remove foil, and top bell peppers with shredded mozzarella cheese. Put back in oven and broil uncovered for 5 minutes or until cheese is browned.
- Transfer to bowls (2 peppers per person) and enjoy!
Ingredients 2lbs ( 1 Kg,) rose hips 1 ˝ pints (3/4 litre) water, sugar, tartaric acid.
Choose firm but well ripened hips, (they should be red or deep orange). Wash, and top and tail. Renove the trivet from a pressure cooker, and put in the fruit and water. Bring to 10 lbs pressure over a medium heat and pressure cook for 30 mins. Reduce pressure at room temperature and stir well with a wooden spoon through a wire sieve. Strain the pulp again through a scalded jelly bag. Add 1 lb (1/2 a kilo) of sugar and ˝ a teaspoon of tartaric acid for every pint (1/2 litre) of juice. Return to heat in an open pan, and stir over a low heat until sugar is dissolved. Bring to boil and boil until setting point is reached.
Note: Most other fruit cooked in a pressure cooker will only need about 10 minutes.submitted by our Everything is Coming Up Roses girl Daphne from Argentina

I hope you have enjoyed this week's issue which I would like to close with the following email from Cindy from the USA:
Dear Sharon,
I so enjoyed your story about your trip to Salt Lake City. You have such a talent for writing an interesting story. I think God has given you a wonderful gift to be able to help others see through your words. I felt like I was right there with you. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all.
I was so sorry to hear about your husband leaving. I'm sure you must be devastated. Sometimes life does seem so unfair, but God can make something good out of anything.
When my husband died I thought my world had ended. I didn't know in what direction to turn. I asked God to show me the way. It was funny but he told me to use this time to make myself better. I started taking care of myself for the first time ever. I started walking, exercising, lifting weights etc. I lost over 160 lbs. It was the only time in my life that I finally had time to focus on me! As I got better physically, my whole mental outlook changed.
That's when my son started teaching me about the computer also and that opened up a whole new world to me. Eventually that's where I met Vern and the rest is history.
It took me quite a while, and those days will always be a part of who I am now, but I have moved forward and life is good once again. It will be for you to.
I remember when my husband died, a lady I'd known from town whose husband had passed away, told me "You will love again someday." "I know right now you can't even imagine that, but you will." I thought she was NUTS! Now I know she was right. You never stop loving that first love, but you can love again. It will just be another chapter in your life.
Right now just take care of you. Just know that all of us in the WWWCOF loves and appreciates all that you have done and are always doing for us. You touch many lives and help us all more than you know. You are a wonderful gift to us all and we all love you dear friend. Cindy
