Punxsutawney Phil's official forecast:

Phil Says Six More Weeks of Winter!
Phil's official forecast as read 2/2/08 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:

Here Ye! Here Ye! Here Ye!

On Gobbler's Knob on this fabolous Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2008 Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators, Rose to the call of President Bill Cooper and greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths.

After casting a weathered eye toward thousands of his faithful followers, Phil consulted with President Cooper and directed him to the appropriate scroll, which proclaimed:

"As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!"

Bragging Rights

In these time we are living in we are always hearing about crime everywhere and all the bad things going on. It seems as though we rarely hear about the "GOOD THINGS" anyone does. Therefore I want to share with you about a very Special Lady who got an Award for Good Citizenship this year.

Her name is Helen Bradley:
Yesterday it was a very exciting day for me receiving my Medal for Good Citizenship. I was so proud to be a Metis that I wore my skirt and vest with the sash on and I received so many compliments on the sash. My son Larry wore his sash and Elsie his wife wore a beaded small pin sash alone with my daughter Linda wearing her sash with her partner Daryl wearing a beaded pin sash as well, all of whom were so proud being recognized as Proud Metis.

Son Larry, Helen, Daughter Linda (back) The Honorable David Onley and Wife (front).

Cyndi King my special guest was amazing to help me through the whole day, she was so proud to be there with her beautiful smile and explaining all the question's about her sash that she wore very proudly. Thank you Cyndi for being the person that you are. I am so proud of our Georgian Bay Metis Council to have sent in the application with the support letters from individual's that I cannot ever thank them enough. Thank You Thank You. President Alden Barty keep leading your citizen's on the right path as you have been in the past.

Soon after all the photo's were taken we were able to join our guest downstairs for refreshment and there I was sought out by a beautiful woman to present me with a letter from the Minister of Aboriginal Northern Affairs congratulating me on being the recipient of the Good Citizenship Award Medal. What a beautiful surprise, I am honored to have received it.

The Honorable Lieutenant Governor David C. Onley also requested that Cyndi and I join him at his table for lunch on the 33rd floor of the Sutton Place Hotel Pent House. Wow what a beautiful day it was to overlook Toronto from so far up and the sun was shining for all of us thirteen that was chosen to receive the Good Citizenship Award Medal out of thousands across Ontario that had applied. It is a memorable day I will never forget having my children there wearing their sashes, made me really feel so proud to be their mother. I will be wearing my medal with pride. Thank you everyone for your good wishes etc. Senator Helen Bradley O.M.C.

Helen is 73 years old, and lives in Penetang Ontario Canada. Her husband Helmut passed away last year. She is the Mother of two children, Larry who is 55 years old and Linda who is 54. She has two Grandchildren one boy Robin and one girl Natasha and two Great Grand children, Joshua and Savana. Helen is the God Mother of Shirley (Dee) Lane, her friends of 48 years, Marie and Garnet Duquet's daughter. Also Helen is a long time friend of Marie Linder. Helen has always been a volunteer at one place or another. She loves to help others as best she can. In 1993 Helen became a citizen of the Metis Nation Ontario Canada. She worked on genealogy for her people to become citizens. She sits on the Cultural Advisory Committee for Parks Canada and is an Elder on Enaahtig Health Board. Helen has just recently joined the Grandmothers to Grandmothers group. She does bead work to sell and raise funds to send to Africa to help the Grandmothers who have to look after their Grandchildren because their parents passed away from HIV. She also got to sit on another committee last week, Habitat for Humanity. Helen not being in the best of health herself, continues to be there for others when needed. We have gotten together and want to send a great big CONGRATULATIONS to you Helen for being who you are and what you show. There are still good and caring people in this world. Thank you.

  • Feb. 12 - Lincoln's Birthday (USA)
  • Feb. 14 - Valentine's Day - that special day when you share with people how you appreciate and love them, and that is always nice.
"There is no remedy for love but to love more."
    - Henry David Thoreau
  • Feb. 18 - President's Day (USA)

History Lesson - Have a history teacher explain this if they can.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

    Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
    Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theatre named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theatre and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theatre.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

    And here's the kicker ...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

  • Feb. 22 - Washington's Birthday (USA)
  • Feb. 29 - Sadie Hawkins Day -- a woman's day to propose marriage. This tradition originates in Ireland in the 5th century, when St. Bridget convinced St. Patrick to allow one day that a woman could propose. If the man refused, he was fined (incidentally, St. Bridget proposed to St. Patrick that day; he said no). 1,600 years later, the fine has been ousted (who's idea was that?), but women still have only this one day every 4 years set aside to profess their love and commitment for the men in their lives.

Dear Heather

Hello ... My question is, why is it most leaders do not want to go away after their term or period. This is common in African countries. What can we do as youths, the leaders to be one day, do to fight that? Anonymous

Dear Anonymous - Unfortunately this is common in many volunteer organizations. Often the leader's term is extended when there is no replacement available or they offer to stay. There is usually a shortage of volunteers in any organization so he / she may be asked to continue longer. Not knowing the circumstances it is difficult to guide you. Is there someone who overseas the leaders you can talk to? Is it possible to communicate with a person higher in the Organization? Maybe talk to someone from a different company? I am really sorry I can't be more helpful. at this time. Good luck, Heather

So, is there something or your mind? Write to Heather directly and she will do her best to answer all questions in the spirit of friendship and caring based on the information given non judgmentally. If I am unable to answer, I'll try to direct you to the appropriate place.

Are you fed up with the weather? Have you got the Winter Blues? Take a look at my story this week - it should cheer you up a little, I hope.

A Very Special Holiday

Friday, August 6, 1984; I finished up my shift at 2:00 pm and filled up the Land Rover on my way home, (quite an experience because I had only passed my driving test on Tuesday, and, as we hadn't had the 'beast' for long I didn't know that it was fitted with an extra large gas tank; 40 gallons!). Home to a quick sandwich, then load up the 'beast' with all the camping gear before the girls get home from school at 4:00 pm.

Home they came in a posse; the older girls pick the younger two up as they pass the junior school, they came bursting into the house with the news that 'someone's filled the beast up with camping gear". Carol, with an expression that any poker player would die for said; "OH ! Didn't I tell you? We're going on holiday". WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? WHEN ? "OH! - Well! about as soon as you've all finished eating"; that meal must have lasted about 30 seconds!

Piling everyone in, I issue strict warnings about behaving; "I'm new to driving; we have a long journey; etc.". Off we go at a nice sedate pace ... after all I've been driving for 3 days and I'm suddenly in charge of about 2 tons of vehicle (a huge change from the compact I'd learned to drive in), loaded down with a heap of camping gear and the 6 people who are the most precious in the whole world to me. I had arranged an overnight stop at about half distance at a roadside campsite; and, when we arrived we were greeted by a procession of hand painted finger-boards.

To this day the girls, and even our grandchildren, refer to this campsite as Tents, Tents, Ladies & Gents; though in fairness to the proprietor, I should point out that this isn't the name on the billboard out front! Out we all pile, set up the tent and beds in short order, then it's off to the village 'chippy'; pie and chips all round and a large bottle of coke to help it down; having ambled back to the campsite later everyone is happy to collapse on the beds, and zzzzzzzzz! Well adventures are VERY hard work you know!

8:00 am Saturday morning, all packed up and back on the road to adventure; wonderful! But by 10:00am the chorus of "I'm Hungry" is deafening. So we stop at a roadside craft centre / cafe for a second breakfast; well the first had been at 7:00 am, (just cereal, sausage, bacon, eggs, beans, toast), hardly even enough to keep a girl up and running for long!

12:30 pm Saturday; finally arrive at our destination campsite, into the office to pay our fees for the week; back out to find Carol's alone in the beast, "they've all gone to find the beach", she says. "They needed to stretch their legs, and run off a bit of breakfast". About an hour and a half later, Carol and I are exhausted we have put up the tent, inflated 6 air mattresses, set up everything including the camp kitchen and cooker: we're just sitting down to a well earned cuppa when! Up troop 5 very wet, rather sandy little girls

"WOW the beach is miles long!"
"Those sand dunes are about a mile high!"
"The water's lovely and warm!"
"WE'RE HUNGRY!".

OH Well here we go AGAIN!

Sunday morning 8:00 am, cooked breakfast and a family meeting, (coffee, cookies and the walk along the beach are already a distant memory). We decide on a loose daily plan:

  • Early morning; coffee, cookies, walk then breakfast.
  • Mid-morning outing; zoo, castles, slate mines, train trip, boat trip; whatever!
  • LUNCH then a rest during the mid-day heat.
  • Mid-afternoon down to the beach for a swim, etc.
  • Late afternoon tea and sandwiches, then free n' easy until
  • Evening out for an evening meal.
  • Bed Time; just one more stroll along the beach first; PLEASE dad!
We had been blessed with an exceptionally hot, dry summer to date, and that week was equally as good.

On the Friday, our last full day there, I arranged a special trip (with the campsite owner's connivance; he was totally smitten with the girls). At 9:00 am a tractor, towing a trailer full of hay arrived outside the tent! Despite a lot of puzzled looks and questions, we all climbed into the hay and off we went. Up through the village; Left, up the lane past the 'Mill Restaurant' and on for about 2 miles; into and eventually up, and onto the moors; eventually arriving at a secluded, wooded valley with a quiet mountain lake at its centre. On the banks of the lake sat a small boat house containing a large rowing boat and cooking facilities, surrounded by light woodland and cliff faces at back of the woods, down which a mountain stream tumbled. (The campsite owner's private hide-away and fishing hole). The whole valley was ours for the day! We had a wonderful day, exploring the woods, climbing, rowing on the lake, admiring the scenery, etc.

The only thing that the girls were disappointed about was that the lake was very deep and steep sided they couldn't swim in it. However, where the stream tumbled down over the rocks they found quite a large pool below the falls. Most of them hadn't brought bathing suits but as we were alone in the valley! That didn't really matter, did it?

See Yah - as we say here in Wales. Bye for now and
Diolch-yn-fawr
(thank you very much)

News About Canada

1858 Gold Rush - British Columbia

Did you know that there were several gold finds in British Columbia in the 1850s, but the largest and most important discoveries were made in the sand bars along the Fraser River. When the first consignment of Fraser River gold reached San Francisco on April 3, 1858, the Fraser River Gold Rush was on. Tens of thousands of people flocked to the area, increasing the population of Victoria from 500 to more than 5000 people; thousands more moved to the mainland.

Almost overnight, gold prospecting eclipsed the fur trade as the major industry in the region. In 1858 Britain formalized its hold on the coast by establishing the colony of British Columbia, sometimes known as the "gold colony". The economic boom lasted into the early 1860s, when British Columbia and Vancouver Island lapsed into a recession.

At Esquimalt, B.C., a steamer -- no longer needed after the end of the gold rush.

Now for some recent news from British Columbia, Canada. Sadly, a sign of our times and not a good sign at that. Pulling into a gas station, fueling up and then paying the clerk is history in British Columbia as of February 1st, 2008. The new legislation (Grants Law) came about after Grant Depatie was killed attempting to foil a gas - and - dash in the Lower Mainland. You now must prepay before fuelling up. This new legislation is the first of its kind in Canada. I believe it is a good law because it addresses the issue of employee safety, particulary those employees working alone all night long.

I like the convenience of paying at the pump with my credit or debit card so this new legislation will not affect me. I am very curious as to what you think of it and what the laws are in your countries for fuelling up so email me and let me know. Sharon from Paradise Island, aka Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

Valter's Brazil

On February here in Brazil we've the Carnival, and as you know it's the biggest popular party to celebrate the life before Ash Wednesday; after it we have the Lent (annual period of fasting and penitence observed by Christians in preparation for Easter). We have a special place to celebrate it, we named Sambodramo, and normally we got a whole week to make the Carnival party. These photos below are the Sambodramo in Rio when the Carnival party began in last Sunday. Each place here in Brazil has your own party and its own features, but I guess that the best has been Rio, Bahia, and maybe Pernambuco in the Northeast.

We got about 3 million people dancing, singing and celebrating the good thing of life with much happiness in Rio only, but if you consider Bahia, and Permambuco besides Sao Paulo this total could get more than 10 million people. The tourism grown up very much in this time, and the Samba Schools are going very beyond celebrate only, they make a Politic critical to make better the governments jobs - social works ahead. It would be a social pressure onto current government and a previous skill about what could happen in the next elections.

We can find out much more Carnival photos in Brazil by the internet surely, and compare with other places in the world wide, for instance San Francisco in US, and even Aruba in Caribbean, but I really prefer our party here in Rio. If you've any additional question please share with me, ok?

The Further Adventures of Dabthoms, aka David from Essex, England would like to talk about about Mission Statements.

Articulating a mission statement can provide the required competitive edge to your company strategy and enable it to be successful and profitable.

Mission Statement

You have the great pleasure to be visiting the Web site of Tarradiddle.com.

Tarradiddle are the leading purveyors of bullshit, long words and hyperbole in the marketplace.

Tarradiddle is a focused company. We know what's important in business. We know what makes us successful. We know all this and now we can share some of it with little old you, the customer.

Our function is to productively reinvent two-tier mega-infrastructures to allow us to take over the nation and better serve our customers.

Our mission is to enhance catalysts for vision to tirelessly strategize face time as part of our business plan to better serve the market.

We know how good it must be for you; having us working with you and charging you huge amounts of money for the privilege. After all, not everyone can be as successful and talented as we are. You're obviously not, otherwise you wouldn't need us.

We know that one day you would like to be able to do what we do. But until then, keep sending us the cheques.

Emile Coue

Emile Coue was born in 1857 to middle class parents in the Burgundy region of France. He had an unremarkable childhood and studied to become a pharmacist. It was in his practice of pharmacy that he first became aware of a curious trend among his customers.

Coue discovered that when he praised the curative powers of a medicine to a customer, the medicine seemed to work particularly well. However, when he dispensed the same medication without positive comment, it didn't work nearly as well.

There is nothing complicated about the Coue method. It is simply a matter of conditioning the unconscious through repeated self-suggestions or images.

He recommended to patients that they recite some words up to 30 times a day: "Each day and in every way I am becoming better and better."

Coue's idea was that this would be a way of getting people to realise that, if they are positive about life, they have the potentialto be able to help themselves insome ways.

Another of his quotes was:
"When the imagination and will power are in conflict, are antagonistic, it is always the imagination which wins, without any exception."

The success of his clinic in restoring people to good health was based on the premise that:
Every idea which exclusively occupies the mind is transformed into an actual physical or mental state.

The efforts we make to conquer an idea by exerting conscious will only serve to make the idea more powerful.

There is no doubt that the repetition of positive affirmations can produce profound physical, psychological, spiritual and behavioural changes. Best of all it's free.

Char's World

This Little Family walks around our neighborhood daily. They are out & about around 7:00 am. This was on the way taking Haley to school. They visit each neighbors yard eating and it is so amazing to watch. The Male (I think Male) stands straight and still like a statue watching all around while the others go about eating. Then he makes a sound and they all follow as the next yard is in for their treat. When we moved here there were two. Mommy & Daddy, now they have grown quite a large family. I could sit and watch them all morning. We also have a few other friends like Bears OH MY! and a few raccoons and lot's of squirrels. Hope you enjoy.

Australian Report

Barry with knife, Jan pink scarf

On the morning of the party, my sister and brothers and spouses arrived, and we had not been together in the one place for about 20 years. We have seen each other on odd occasions, but not all together. My sister was about an hour later than expected as they are from QLD, and they forgot about daylight saving in NSW where we are. Barry's first wife from down near Sydney, and her sister who came especially from England were also among the guests, and they are staying for the week until next Friday.

After we had breakfast Lois and I went out to a friends to cook the meat dish in a wok on a wood stove. Barry had been out on Wednesday to cut the wood for it. I had spent the previous afternoon cutting onions, other vegetables and cooking bacon and slicing 10 kgs of steak very finely for two asian dishes. I also planned to keep one saucepan aside with no wheat whatsoever (not even in any flavourings or gravy mix) for the coelics. We did one with plum flavour, and the other apricot, also about 20 steakette type meat starting with a W with no onion and Moroccan flavour.

After lunch I got the last of the supplies, milk, ice-cream, sugar, coffee, tea etc, and picked up the cake. I had planned on going to the church hall and setting up myself, but luckily my sis and the two s-i-laws hopped up and came with me, and they were marvelous, I don't know how I thought I could do it by myself. I had to turn the urn on at 4 pm. We set up for 80, 10 tables of 8 and three down the centre for the food. I had gold sparkly candles on a black holder, 2 dishes of nuts, a small box of chocolates and 2 artificial flower posies for each table, and the cutlery and napkins. I had a couple of arrangements from home, one for a table with our guest book on it, and others for the food tables and the cake table. I had 83 acceptances, but I thought some would forget or be ill. As it turned out a few didn't come, some let us know during the day, but a number who had not let me know did attend. Perhaps when they got the invite they thought they had indicated they would come, but I misunderstood and thought they would let me know.

It was good to see the guests arriving after 6 pm, and by 20 to 7 with everyone standing around chatting I was wondering if we had set enough places, so I asked our minister George to ask everyone to be seated and say Grace. We had asked that people not bring gifts, and to bring a salad, dessert or slice. I had asked a few to bring something in particular, and left the rest up to them. We had a wonderful array of food.

After the dessert people helped themselves to tea or coffee, and The Messengers began their program. We broke it up with Happy Birthday and cutting the cake, and a half hour break for more mingling and chatting. We started with a Scottish Medley, and had some Irish and dance numbers, and a skit type number that Lynn wrote called My Mother. Altogether Barry did 8 of his songs, and we finished with a hand clapping Gospel singalong and Barry singing "How Great Thou Art". I have a few percussion instruments that I shake rattle and roll - only joking, maracas, sticks and a lagerphone at the appropriate time.

By the time we finished the program a few people had knocked over the washing up and there wasn't a lot to do to pack up.

It was a bit stressful leading up to it, hoping everything would come together as I had not done anything on this scale before. But I would be quite confident to do it again. We have tentatively said we will do it again for Barry's 75th - IF WE ARE ALL STILL HERE !!!!

PS: The cake wasn't crooked, we folded the box under it, not noticing it was on a silver base til after we cut it.

News from Our Georgia Peach

Georgia is the peach state, however South Carolina's peaches taste better. Our state song is Georgia On My Mind and our state bird is the brown thrasher. Most of the farm land around here is being sold off because the children do not want to farm. So there are new apartments and subdivisions going up everywhere. We are still in the country and I don't think anyone around here is going to sell off their land anytime soon. We live on the east coast of Georgia about 40 miles from Savannah. Savannah is a beautiful city. There are a lot of streets where the trees grow over the road and you drive with a canopy over you. A lot of people around here think that the spanish moss that grows in the trees is lovely. I don't happen to agree, mainly because our trees are full of it and we can't get rid of it. Downtown savannah was built in squares. Each square has a little park in the middle of it with statues of prominent people from the past. Of course like any tourist town there is one strip that is geared to vacationers and that's River Street. The street is made of cobbles and bricks, there are all kinds of souvenir shops and restaurants along there. Also they have day cruise boats in the river. I have been on one for the lunch cruise. They go up and down the river and serve a very nice lunch. It only last an hour or two but was very enjoyable. I have been to Atlanta, but it was right after the Olympics were there so, got to see Centennial Park and all the bricks that people bought to help fund the Olympics. we also went to CNN Center and ate lunch there. So, that's a little about Georgia.

My birdhouse collection. I don't really know what attracted me to them but I just think they are cute. I have birdhouse switchplates in my kitchen and birdhouses tucked here and there all around. I also have a little wall hanging that says God bless the birds for the songs they sing and the joy they bring. I found a cute little birdhouse on a stick that has a cute little ladybug on the front, so I had to get that one. lol I've got decorative pot holders with birdhouses on them hanging up. I'm not sure how many I have because I haven't counted but they are a bit of whimsey in my kitchen.
have any of you ever gone to ivillage? There is a message board on there called fifty and up friends. I have been a member for quite a few years now and we call ourselves the ladybugs. Hence my collection which keeps expanding. Love's Grace
by Merrie from Ontario Canada

In love we find
both the lover and the loved,
human or object,
sentiment or deed,
finite or timeless,
depending on our need.

Love is always changing,
or ever the same,
if we choose;
sometimes cheap,
sometimes priceless,
sometimes unknown,
sometimes most cherished.

Love's many faces
are never far from us,
though at times
seemingly unattainable
depending on our place,
which is to say
depending on our state of mind.

Love's pure face will never hide
from the self seeking it's place
in time and space,
for love is where we need it
when we know it least,
and love is where we find it
no matter it's name or place,
for love is always willing
to reflect upon the lover,
or the loved
its immortal grace.

Things to Think About

RESPECT
You can't get it without giving it.
You can't keep it without sharing it.
It has to be earned.
It's not a one shot deal.

R = reasonable
E = enjoyable
S = stimulating
P = persevering
E = earned
C = caring
T = trustworthy

Have a great day everyone. Irene, aka Scotty, from Washington, USA

Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Careers end.
BUT.........
Sisters are there,
no matter how much time and how many miles are between you.
A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach.
When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.
Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you ... Or come in and carry you out.
Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family, all bless our life!
The world wouldn't be the same without women, and neither would I. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other.

Short and very sweet:

  • Ten are peacefully sleeping on clouds.
  • Nine are playing.
  • And one is reading her Google Express at this moment.

The Wal-Mart Invasion

Have you been affected in your corner of the globe?

A few years ago here in the UK, Wal-Mart bought out a very large chain of food stores - formerly known as ASDA. They have retained the ASDA name and logo but he store bill-boards and much of their advertising now carry the sub heading --- 'now part of the Wal-Mart group'.

ASDA were a very successful chain before the Wal-Mart takeover. The chain started originally as a 'farmers co-operative', selling fresh from the farm produce in the N of England; offering such good value that they were an instant success. ASDA have been the cheapest 'general grocery' store chain in the UK for about 10yrs running (this by public poll): Wal-Mart seem to be maintaining this trend - however the produce range seems to reduce regularly, while the range of household and electrical goods is increasing at the same rate! By the way, Mr. Fenton appears to have missed a few tricks, e.g.:

  • 1 trip an alarm in one aisle of the electrical goods, then while an assistant re-sets it trip an alarm in the next - properly timed this can go on for quite a while!
  • 2 tune a tv on the display onto one of the satellite 'adult' channels - if you catch the right tv all the others on the display will change with it.
  • 3 go down on one knee behind your partner and exclaim in a loud voice "I didn't mean to pick up the wrong brand - please don't stop my allowance"! alternatively " for 30 yrs I've been a loving, obedient partner - you PLEASE marry me know"!
  • 4 select a large item of self assembly furniture and ask an assistant to demonstrate how to assemble it - because you can't read.
Should I go on? WelshGoG aka Owen from Wales

Kitchen Tips

Kitchen Tips
THIS WEEK, in view of the Chinese New Year:
Tips on Chinese Cooking
Chinese Cooking

Cooking is an art. The best way to win the heart of a friend is through their stomach. Family love grows stronger for you as they live on your good cooking and especially when the cooking is varied. Try and serve them a Chinese meal once in a while and watch the result.

Introduction:
Chinese chefs rely on judgment for their measurements. They have no thermometer to tell degrees of heat, no cup or spoon to measure quantity by, no clock to tell time. Their directions, translated as accurately as possible are herein set down simply for anybody to follow, it is hoped.
It is not necessary to have a great assortment of Chinese spices to cook Chinese dishes. Soy sauce is considered the most important item. The second important item is gourmet flavouring powder (MSG - monosodium glutamate) made of wheat and other vegetables.

As for Chinese groceries and vegetables, it is well to use them if you can get them. In Chinese cooking, there are three methods most commonly used -- steaming, frying and boiling.

In steaming, all the liquid should be drained from the food and just enough stock added to cover the ingredients. Steam, as in a double boiler, until just soft, for at the point the food is most delicious. Before eating all the broth and oil sold be removed, and the food steamed again for a few minutes. A hot heat should be used in steaming.

In boiling, the heat should be sufficient to keep the food at the boiling point, but at no time should it boil vigorously.

Frying should be done over a very hot heat, and the foot should be turned constantly so that every particle will become evenly browned.

To obtain the best results in Chinese cooking, the food must be fresh, the flavoring must be right and the cutting of the meat and vegetables must be properly done. The tenderness, crispness or softness of the food is, of course, dependent upon the matter of timing and adjusting the heat of the flames. Also important are the consistency of the gravy, the proper size of the utensil, so that there will be ample room to stir the ingredients. Cooking in Chinese manner insures, to a great extent, that the vegetables are not over-cooked.

Most of the Chinese dishes are created by the combination of meats and vegetables, each borrowing the flavour from the other and lending back its own in return. Chinese dishes are not only economical and simple to cook, but also are time saving, delicious and nutritious.

Left-over Suggestions

In Chinese cooking, left-overs come handy. Do not throw them away. Use them to create Chinese dishes. Cooked meat of any kind is good to make fried rice, egg foo yung and chop suey dishes. For instance, a cup of left-over meat of any kind will make enough fried rice or egg foo yung for two or three dishes.

Note: You can always create some kind of Chinese meal with whatever cooking materials you have at home. If skillet is not large enough to do your cooking, use a large pot instead.

Chinese Sauces and Gourmet Powder (MSG):

The most popular Chinese Sauces are:
Duck Sauce (a Chinese Chutney), Hot Mustard (use hot dried mustard, mix with water until smooth before using); Oyster Sauce; and Soya Sauce.

Many Chinese recipes call for the gourmet powder (Mono Sodium Glutamate). When added to a variety of meat and vegetable dishes, it has the remarkable property of blending together and bringing out the natural food flavours.

HEALTH WATCH

I have another little piece of information that I would like to pass on. I started taking Lyrica for my fibromyalgia almost a month ago and it is working for me. I know it won't work for everyone but in my case it has been a life saver. I have a problem with my neck, shoulder & back so I cannot say that I am pain-free but it has helped so much that I am able to clean my house and I couldn't do that before. I told my doctor that I wish I had known about it months ago.

Electro Pollution
- recent and rapidly expanding threat to our health and the health of our children and what many prominent scientists and environmentalists are calling the health hazard of the 21st century.

Science has proven without a doubt that we are bombarded daily with a low level radiation called electromagnetic field radiation. We now have the tools available and have collected the irrefutable evidence in independent laboratories all around the world showing the negative effect this radiation has on the body. And just as with cigarettes (which at one point we thought were good for us!), the effects are accumulative and will manifest over time into some sort of disease or worse.

Let's focus specifically with cell phones as they are one of the worst sources of electro pollution, as our body is subjected to the technology in such close proximity.

Our children are up to 7 times more susceptible to the radiation being emitted from a cell phone (home cordless phones are also very damaging), as their skulls aren't as hard or brains completely developed.

We know now that with at least 10 yrs of cell phone use of 500 minutes a month there is a very big jump in the development of specific cancers that can be directly related to the use of cell phones. Of course for years there has been a debate between the cell phone industry, stating the phones are safe, and the rest of the scientific world that state they are not safe, and are causing all sorts of health issues and worse.

The reality is that cell phones are a great tool for very many reasons and for kids to have one in case of an emergency is a good idea on many levels. However the technology is actually slowly causing long-term damage. The dilemma is what can we do.

I truly believe that the other opportunities did not work out because He was waiting for exactly the right one. I work with some amazing women and the doctors are very nice. Again, Thank you! Ava Elizabeth (Libby) Skeel

Muire: (28 year old Mommy with brain cancer) Today was the first day of my Radiation treatment. They calibrated the machine to my mask, so it took a little longer than a normal treatment (which will be 15-20 minutes in length). It was kind of neat- my head was the fulcrum and the table moved me into position. My head was held in place by my mask and as the radiation started, I did not actually feel anything. But every time the beam started, I saw a blue glow behind my closed eyelids and I smelled a familiar scent- like propane. It turns out, the smell as well as the blue glow were only "in my head"- literally. The radiologist said the beams were hitting a group of optic sensory nerves; causing me to see a blue light that did not actually exist. The smell of propane was not real, either; again, the radiation was hitting a group of olfactory nerves and causing a scent memory that was stored in that particular group of cells to come to the surface. So from now on (as long as they hit the same group of nerves), I can just imagine I'm barbecuing on a beautiful clear blue day! Today was also my first day of Chemo. I took my dose of oral Temodar and so far I have had no adverse effects (but it is only the first day). The biggest hurdle I had today was having to skip lunch, so at least I'm off to a good start so far. People have said that some people don't get too many side effects, and some people get them all. Apparently, I really won't know until about two weeks in to treatment so we'll see. I love you all and think about everyone constantly. Love, Muire

Mack Esterbrooke: (Friend of Marie & Garnet) Mack has either water or blood around his brain and is in ICU in the hospital. Mack is the brother of Art Esterbrooke very close and long friend of Duquet's. Please lift Mack and the family up in prayer for healing and comfort may God Guide the doctors and Hold Mack In His healing Hands. In Jesus Name

Kathleen - Dear friend of FlMarie & Charlie Linder. Kathleen had breast cancer and her husbands employer took off without telling anyone he was closing down. They had no insurance so they had to use all their savings for Kathleen's surgery. Of course there can be no reconstruction because of financial reasons. The prayer we are asking is for Jody, her husband to find a job soon and for God to provide for their needs. Help Kathleen cope and Bless her abundantly.

LA PAMPA Province

La Pampa tourist offer is aimed at nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts and those in search for a wide sight with clear skies. The peace characteristic of Rural Tourism, the source of life thermal springs offer, together with its amazing therapeutic powers, and the thrill of witnessing wild animals in their natural habitat are unique ways of discovering the province, preparing to experience always more. Contrasts between cities and open fields, entertainment and contemplation, urban and folk clothes. All this involves "La Pampa invites you to enjoy life". For devotees of our country, the province sets forth as an unrivalled gateway to authentic Argentine identity.

Tradition

This section is associated with the discovery and return to Argentine origins and tradition, the need of meeting primitive roots and custom, Argentine view and identity. The "Gaucho" archetype (South American Cowboy), the undeveloped world, the return to forgotten virtues: respect, commitment, credibility, values transmitted generation after generation, craftwork. Cultural space hunters, interested in the historical interpretation of local spaces, the peculiar different ways of living and working of people from towns and cultures related to Argentinean Identity - a mixture of native, creole and immigrant origins.

Festivals stand out as the most ancient manifestations of any living culture. Such representations are complex, since through them are exhibited other elements that signal the presence of a certain civilization. Clothes, crafts, dances and food are made manifest, revealing its people's idiosyncrasies.

Popular festivities are the result of great summons which remain in people's memory and, consequently, unfold their culture. They are interpreted as the celebration of people's identity; they enrich cultural heritage, and are worthy of being included in any tourist schedule.

La Pampa offers a wide and rich tourist calendar, which comprises all sorts of cultural events, namely Dressage & Folklore National Festival, Provincial Salt Festival, art exhibitions, concerts and plays, among others. Thus, tourists will have at their disposal a calendar to suit all tastes.

Crafts

Crafts are products, totally or partially handmade, elaborated with raw materials as well as home-produced or local consumables. Generally, they illustrate designs inspired by cultural or regional issues. In La Pampa Province, craftsmanship is developed by individual producers or at crafts workshops, distributed throughout the vast Pampean soil. The local crafts are not only worthy of competing within the region, they are also placed at the top of foreign demand.

Random Acts of Kindness

Last weekend, we were volunteers part of the time to help load a truck with donations of food, clothing, mineral water etc for the latest flood victims of Salta Province, where Leo is from (and neighbouring Bolivia too, is also suffering severe flooding). The truck was filled, and even as they were closing its doors people arrived with more things. Two days after the truck had left, people were still phoning for stuff to be picked up. Unfortunately the Salta residents in this city do not have somewhere permanent to store donations of that kind. Daphne from Argentina

BEAUTY TIPS
according to Audrey Hepburn

  • For attractive lips speak words of kindness.
  • For lovely eyes seek out the good in people.
  • For a slim figure share your food with the hungry.
  • For beautiful hair let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
  • For poise walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.
  • Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
  • As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.

Movie Reviews

We saw 'The Bucket List' recently. It was good and I love the concept. There is one movie I would highly recommend for all ages - Second Hand Lion. It's available in rental stores. Well worth watching. Hope you enjoy, Irene, aka Scotty, from Washington, USA

we watched "Batman Begins" over the weekend and thought it was pretty good; much better than the others. Ellen from Georgia, USA

I appreciate the way you have embraced me. I'm getting to feel like I might belong here. Got my hubby to hang some pictures yesterday, they have been waiting for a couple of weeks now. Also had to move two because of the new entertainment center. Ellen from Georgia, USA

WWWCOF is definitely a cool place to be. It has become my favourite very quickly. Irene, aka Scotty, from Washington, USA

Yep I love the weekends, I have been very lazy today I have not done any housework yet, just put some washing in the machine I might just leave the house work to tomorrow. I have been food shopping that all I have done really but who cares!!! I live on my own so I can do what I want heheh. London Chrissie

International Weather Station

Here in Mar del Plata we have had a surprising shortage of rain. Today (Tuesday) we had an hour's gentle rain, though. Daphne from Argentina.

It is very wet in the Pacific North West. Snow, rain, both and wind. I am really looking forward to Spring. Take care, Irene, aka Scotty, from Washington, USA

The weather here in my part of Alabama has been about the same for a couple of weeks now instead of the ups and downs it was doing. We have had lots of rain and more expected this week and the forecast for today 2-3-08 is for patchy fog with a slight chance of rain and highs in the upper 70's. You heard it right, that's almost 80 so our almost summer weather is back. It's very windy too with gusts up to 30 mph or more. Wanda from Thomasville, AL, USA

Music Survey

This is hard because I love music and don't really have a top 10 but I will put 10 of my favorites and I like them all about the same. Wanda from Thomasville, AL, USA

  • I Fall to Pieces - Patsy Cline
  • Jessie's Girl - Bruce Springfield

  • (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction- Rolling Stones
  • In The Ghetto- Elvis Presley
  • Bad Moon Rising- CCR

Gardening

Six Steps to a No-Work Garden
1. Start small. Don't create a monster that you don't have time to feed regularly. Keep your garden small, and most of all, fun. Over time, as your confidence grows, increase the size.
2. Invest in soil. Starting with good, rich, organic soil where plants will thrive with a minimum of watering and fertilizing cuts the work from the start. Add organic matter yearly, either by purchasing compost or making your own.
3. Position plants carefully. Much work in a garden comes from not having the right plant in the right place.
4. Select sturdy beauties. Choose high-performance, almost bulletproof plants.
5. Cover soil -- Mulching helps maintain soil moisture levels and prevents weeds from growing. As organic mulch (bark, compost, or leaf mold) breaks down, it improves soil. Mulch also gives the garden a neater, unified look. 6. Trade dragging a hose around for hands-free watering, like drip hoses, as it's easy to put the water exactly where you want it -- and not on the foliage or flowers. It's also more environmentally correct: Less water evaporates into the air.
Bea from the Catskills who adds:

Being a gardener, I get lots of ideas, and have many books. I just love to work in the yard, but again this year is out for me again doing that BUT I always have JB of course to do it for me. I just have to watch him when he mows, so he won't cut the flowers down; he doesn't know a flower from a weed, lol. So being that, my son is giving me lots and lots of flat rock to make a border, so JB will know the flower beds. See my son owns 3 acres and I can get all the rocks I need.

Pursuit of Excellence Programme

Monday morning we (that's me and the visitors) went to an exercise class, free of charge to participants, for older people at another church hall in town. I had been waiting for it to restart as I planned on going this year. There were about 40 people there, 6 of them men. There were chairs set out in a large circle round the room, and we started off with some slow movements to warm up, turn your head to right and look over your shoulder if you can, then left, then shoulders etc. Next the music was on and we walked, marched or bent knees with various arm movements, round the room. All the time people were making comments and laughing, it was so lighthearted and good fun. Then we sat on our chairs and did some light hand weights, and the joke was if you hit the chair with your weight, you did the washing up for the cuppa afterwards. Then we used some sort of stretchy band with our feet. All the time the instructor said "only do what you can" and most people could manage everything easily. Barry is coming along next week too. Hugs, Aussie Jan

Our Furry Friends in the Spotlight

OUR FEATURED PET OF THE WEEK is

"BEBE" - ROMINA'S BABY (DAPHNES DAUGHTER)

This weeks feature is about a travelling puppy's experiences. Poor Bebe, who will be two years old on 7th March has never been away from her homeland before, and not only did she have to do some major travelling, but she also had to deal with all the familys' other dogs. Bebe is visiting Daphne & Leo and has her own real passport with her picture and details and details of her owners, Romina and German. Please read on for her tales and woes.

Daphne says that Romina, German and their dog Bebe arrived safe and sound in Argentina Wednesday evening. We were 12 waiting for them in German's parents house and had split a meal between the two families. They had had a good flight, it sure was good to see them again, but Bebe didn't take too well to flying, As they had had a series of minor delays on the route home, so it was later than expected when we were all able to meet up.

That apart, as soon as German started to greet his family dogs, Bebe went sniff and snarled at them, as if saying "German is MINE" she then spent the evening chasing them or being chased around. After the supper, each of the travellers decided to sleep at their own parents house, and Agos came back here with us, Romi and Bebe. Skippy soon detected the presence of an unknown dog in OUR car and started growling and refused to accept Romina even when Agos took Bebe inside out of his sight. He had been bathed, his hutch cleaned in out and around, and a fresh piece of matress put down for him. He thanked me by deciding to have diarrrea, lay down in it, then dragged it everywhere. Next morning I was able to clean things up a bit, and when Romi got up he accepted her back this time, but refused to accept Bebe. Bebe soon discovered the tortoise in the garden and both inmediately declared war on the other. As you can see, from a pet point of view it is going to be fun!! So who says animals don't have sentiments!!!

This morning, Agos and Romi went off the see what had changed in the city, leaving Bebe with me. She immediately started yelling as if I was murdering her, but already knowing she does that I ignored her. She cried until I took a piece of cooked chicken and started cutting it up to make a chicken pie for lunch, then she shut up and was veeery interested in what I was doing!!! Saturday a whole gang of German's friends are going camping with Ruben and Agos and I don't know who else just for the weekend. I don't know if they are taking Bebe but if they don't I just have to make sure I have something interesting to cut up to distract her.

Today we were visited by Romi's local cousin with her kids, so we were 8 for dinner, only crumbs left of the delicious chicken pie and salad. Romi and Bebe have gone to her in-laws now. Let you know what else happens later love from Daphne from Argentina

Daphne thanks so very much for sending this wonderful story to entertain and also educate others who want to bring their family pet with them on vacation. We must remember they are sensitive and scared as well as us humans. Sometimes it may not be in the pets best interest. I think Bebe can attest to this; dont you? Remember to hug you pet today, for they give us more love and dedication than any one else. Jami from Maryland, USA who reminds us that

Common Expressions - Origin & Meaning

I haven't got a clue

Meaning - Without any knowledge or understanding.

Origin

This little phrase, which is often given as 'I don't have a clue', doesn't at first sight appear to be idiomatic at all and hardly deserving of investigation. After all, a clue is an insight or idea that points us towards a solution. To be without a clue is simply to be ignorant. However, a clue (also spelled clew) previously had a different meaning - a globular ball formed from coiling worms or the like or, more specifically, a ball of thread. Clew has been used with that meaning for at least a thousand years and citations of it in Old English date back to 897AD, when no less an author than Aelfred, King of Wessex used it in his West-Saxon translation of Gregory's Pastoral Care. Shakespeare also used the word with the 'thread' meaning, for example, in All's Well that Ends Well, 1601:

"If it be so, you have wound a goodly clewe."

That seems a long way from crossword clues or Sherlock Holmes' stories. How did we get from a ball of thread to the current meaning of clue?

Go back to Greek myth and recall the tale of Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus entered the labyrinth to kill the half-man, half-bull Minotaur. He did so but was only able to find his way out by retracing his path, marked by the string given to him by Ariadne. So, Theseus 'had a clew' about the safe route out of the maze and was able to escape.

Geoffrey Chaucer recorded this story in The Legend of Ariadne, Part VI of The Legend of Good Women, 1385:

Therto have I a remedie in my thoght,
By a clewe of twyn as he hath gon,
The same weye he may returne a-non,
ffolwynge alwey the thred as he hath come.

So, don't be clueless - all you need is some string. London Chrissie

I had virus problems in my laptop recently some like 1 week ago. I had to make a strong effort to fix it because there are some viruses around lately that you can't perceive and neither to recognize but the virus is already installed and causes many damages in our files and programs. Now I am using the Macfee program like firewall, and even so I confess that I am afraid sometimes. I've avoided to open some mails and attached files, even when the sender being known. You know that I've used my laptop also to work beyond to keep friendship's contacts. I've done important file backups surely, but if I lose my work's pc I'll be in serious problems. It is distressing seeing people that waste their time to make virus or damage programs to harm other people for nothing. You know, the much more I know the human being, the more I've admired my dog!
