REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL

Also there are several very special days this month.

  • Feb. 22 - Washington's Birthday (USA)
  • Federal Budget Day (Canada)
  • Feb. 27 - Stop the Bullying Day

  • Feb. 29 - Sadie Hawkins Day -- a woman's day to propose marriage. This tradition originates in Ireland in the 5th century, when St. Bridget convinced St. Patrick to allow one day that a woman could propose. If the man refused, he was fined (incidentally, St. Bridget proposed to St. Patrick that day; he said no). 1,600 years later, the fine has been ousted (who's idea was that?), but women still have only this one day every 4 years set aside to profess their love and commitment for the men in their lives.
Getting close to March -- so here is a list of special days to get us thinking.

How not to go looking for a better photo angle!

A Cool Morning Down by the River

Earlier this week I took a stroll down by my local river (Rhymney): where I live, at the top of the Rhymney valley it's little more than a stream and after a long dry spell {anyone remember those} it can dry to just a trickle. However, we've had a little rain lately so there was a fair amount of water flowing:

The river looked fairly impressive - and I might add very cold, primarily because there was still a good frost about. At this time of the morning the sun hasn't risen high enough to get down into the valley, and although it's quite light and bright down there, the footpath and grass verges are still white and quite slippery. So, stepping carefully and staying away from the steeper parts of the bank I got down to the waterside to take a few photos. The river runs over a series of rocky shelves at this point and a several small waterfalls occur, stepped one above the other; the highest of these is only about 3 feet, but they still look quite impressive from below and although the river here is only inches deep normally, the pool below each fall is much deeper - usually 2 or 3 feet.

Anyway, to cut a long story short - being a daft old *"! I decided to get right down to water level on that nice flat stone you can see on the picture below; then, having got both feet onto it I found that it was covered in ice, with a little water flowing over the top of it! I'm sure you can guess what happened next. YEP!

Right up past my belly button and boy was it cold. Still the photo didn't turn out too badly; it's the one at the top of this article; then home for some dry clothes, a hot cuppa, and a distinct lack of sympathy from th' BOSS. Sitting in front of the computer sometime later, playing around with a few of the photos and doing my best to ignore the head shakes and mutterings about silly old fools who should know better; I ended up consoling myself by producing this little bit of fun.

Well, I guess we can all be a bit wet sometimes !!

Canadians

"Warm the Cockles" of your heart -- have you heard that one? I read it in an articles somewhere recently and apparently is signifies delight.

Made me thing of some research going on here in British Columbia and the development of a new shellfish species for market -- the native cockle, Clinocardium nuttalii.

Did you know?

  • Seafood is the largest single food commodity exported by Canada.
  • $5 Billion value of seafood exported from Canada annually.
  • 1,500 direct and indirect jobs provided by the B.C. shellfish industry.

Australian Report

This morning I was listening to the radio and they were talking about rock art paintings in the remote north west of Australia, so of course, I had to look it up and found it referred to as:

World's Oldest Rock Art in Australia's Kimberley Coast

Following state-of-the-art dating methods, it is possible that the world’s oldest rock art paintings are located on the remote Kimberley coast of Western Australia. Current belief is that the oldest paintings are those discovered in 1994 at the Grotte Chauvet in France. Radio carbon dating of the pigments used put these works at about 30,000 years old.

But the pigments of the Bradshaw paintings of the Kimberley are so old they have become part of the rock itself, making carbon dating impossible. A partly fossilised wasp nest attached to one of the paintings was dated at 17,000 years old, so far the only indication of their true age.

"The Bradshaw Paintings are incredibly sophisticated, yet they are not recent creations but originate from an unknown past period which some suggest could have been 50,000 years ago," says Peter Robinson, Project Controller of the Bradshaw Foundation. The paintings are named after Joseph Bradshaw who, in 1891, discovered the art when he was lost on an expedition in the north-west of Australia and are known to predate the present Aborigines. The art is dispersed in around 100,000 sites spread over 50,000 sq. km. See some more paintings here

Report from Argentina

We had an interesting Sunday. Since it was just Leo and I, we went out looking for the best deals in a theme that someone had recommended with views of Reunion Oct. "A Traditional Day in the Country". We found three places that offer a typical lunch time and tea time menu and different activities, one of which included a visit to a motor museum. We are still waiting for the estimate from that one.

The most run-of-the-mill one was of course the cheapest, but the one we thought most interesting was of course the most expensive, that one was is in a historic farm house dating from 1830, attended by the owner who, by the way, speaks perfect English. The basic day out out was approx 30 US dollars, they offer a bread making class in the morning ... the bread eaten there is homemade, a history of the place, special regional souvenirs (with the date and name of the meeting) and different forms of entertainment. But everything additional we ask for, from the bread making, souvenirs, horse riding, to the entertainment groups, so the price goes up. The final figure we were given would be reasonable for a 100 person group - the space they have - but is rediculous for a ten to 15 person group, since the dancers singers etc would have to be paid however many they entertain. Anyway we still have the second one's estimate to wait for.

All of these are in and around a rural town about 50 minutes away: Balcarce, whose motor museum we have on the programme anyway.

My family got back from their trip to Bariloche at 2:30 this morning having done the whole 1,200 km drive in one day. They had stayed in a 6 person cabin and Romi has some 300 photos she took. Talk to you soon, hope all is well with you. Daphne from Argentina

A reminder to all that Argentina is a vast country from sub antarctic to tropical, very high mountains to extensive plains. It is impossible to describe all the sights, all the colour, the intrigue, the romance .... some things just have to be experienced!

Charla's World

Hello All, We have had a wonderful time. John's brother and my sister in law, Karen, (sister to me) had a glorious time. We went to Okeechobee where the guys sisters live. We visited a while and then drove back up to Sebastian where we Love to stay. Our first date was at a Marina there where they had an outside bar & grill under a round roof out over the water. We always stay at "OUR MOTEL" The Sand Drift. We did more sight seeing than anything. Karen had just had her neck surgery a month before and the ride from N.Y. was a bit rough. We of course did a lot of eating! It was a bit nippy most of the time but very nice.

Karen & I acted like crazy teenagers (as Always). We got going down a main road with lot's of traffic & I opened my back window, (Karen & I rode in back) stuck my head out & yelled FREE at last!! Everyone was looking at us and of course Karen had to add from her side ... WE JUST GOT HER OUT OF JAIL! People were looking and most were laughing. She is a Nutt, she had lived here in Fl for some 20 years before moving to N.Y. She would go into the shops and restaurants and ask all kinds of tourist questions. Some of their answers were so funny, it was all I could do to keep from laughing. But then the people giving the answers were probably Not from here.

John & I walked on the beach at night and the sound of the waves and the light of the stars and moon were just breathtaking. Even the ocean has a scent of it's own. We reminisced and it was as if we were back 29 years ago (one a bit heavier and one a bit balder) we did laugh over that. This time though I was not a scared newly divorced woman with three sons. I was a wife and no problems, rules, time limits or anything pressing. When we got into the car to leave here we went to a whole different world.

One evening we were all sitting in our living room talking & laughing about old times. Karen all of a sudden said, OMG! I asked what was wrong and she said we are old! I said what? She said we are my Aunt & Uncle. When I was a kid I used to watch them all the time. They sat in their recliners side by side and she always used a blanket like you and John is handing you a Halls cough drop like he did! We are old! I laughed so hard I needed a Depends and almost choked on the cough drop! You can imagine what we are like together.

Roger & Karen left on Tuesday and a part seemed to go also. Although I know it will come again in due time. John and I have four more days and nights left Alone. We went to dinner that night and came home talked for a little while in the candle lite and decided we were a bit tired. Both conked right out.

Wednesday morning John took me out for breakfast and took me to St. Augustine for my birthday. We went the scenic route. So many things to see in a whole different way. Taking time to enjoy the shape, color and purity of God's creation. It was down right Cold that day. When it is cold John's arthritis acts up and I could tell he wasn't at his best even though he said he was fine. So I asked if we could just drive and look instead of walking and such. We have been there before. He said if I was sure. I could tell the relaxed look on his face. So we just listened to the oldies on the radio and talked and looked and laughed. He took me out to a very nice Fish/Steak House for dinner. There were actually No Children there! I told John to listen he said he didn't hear anything and I said exactly. After a wonderful dinner we drove home in no hurry. Thursday John decides we need to go out for Valentines breakfast. No problem here! We went to our Favorite place IHOP and had breakfast. We ran a few errands and came home watched movies and then back out to dinner. I'm forgetting how to cook!

Friday I went to get some groceries. Our food supply was almost zero! Knowing our Freedom is about up but noticing my whole grocery menu's were built around Haley. I was beginning to be glad Motherhood would begin again soon. I made dinner and cleaned the kitchen. We watched TV and fell asleep. So that is mainly our Vacation. Not as luxurious or maybe exciting as others however it was a wonderful time for us.

Bigsis Pat's Journal

February February is the worst month of the year. Though February is the shortest month, it seems like the longest month. February this year, unlike most years, has twenty-nine long, dark, crummy days. We're being punished with an extra day of clouds, snow, and cold. How lovely. Why didn't the folks who designed the Calendar stick the extra day of leap year in April or September? The were Sadists, that's why. The stuck it to us is what they did. The added it to the worst possible month of the year and snickered about it. Adding a day to April or September would have been fair. Those of us who live in the northern hemisphere would get an extra day of spring, those living in the southern hemisphere would get an extra day of fall. Then we'd flip-flop. Cool deal! It's not fair the way it is. People in Australia get a leap summer this year and we get stuck with a leap winter. We're so lucky. By the time February is over, it will seem like it was sixty-two days long. To those of us who live in the Midwestern United States, February would be too long if it had only nine days. I'm for banishing February altogether. We should go back to having ten months a year, like the Romans. February and November need to go. We should have kept Latin and banned February. You can't even get good oysters in February. Read the rest of this rant here.

Well I am now entering into my second month at Port Thrift Shop; and I am totally enjoying it. In fact, I like it so much I have increased the number of days, as well as my the number of hours I am volunteering. I am now doing two 4 hour shifts. And come May, when the shop changes to summer hours I will be working another 3 1/2 hour shift on Saturdays. I do have to say one thing here, volunteers work very hard at their chosen jobs, sometimes I think, harder than the paid employees you see out there.

Today I thought I'd give you a little background on thrift shops, from the other side of the counter. On my days, Mondays & Fridays, I work with two very dedicated ladies, Joann & Nancy, who work in the back of the shop. Their job is to sort the donations as they come in. And, just so you know, this is a very time consuming, labour intensive task. Each item must be inspected thoroughly and carefully, looking for tears & stains, chips, scratches, dents and so forth. Items are not put out until they meet the Thrift Store's strict standards. Once an item is deemed acceptable, they then determine a price, and ticket the item.

Putting out, is one of my many duties. Jo & Nancy put the items in shopping carts, which I then push around the store placing the items in the various departments. As I am on the floor, another of my duties is greeting customers as they arrive, helping them find things, assisting the cashier with bagging and such, as well as doing price checks. On my days I work with three very nice and very different ladies who work cash. On Mondays it's Marlene who is a very quiet but pleasant single lady, who in times past would have been called a spinster. On Fridays I work with Carol in the mornings & Sheila in the afternoon. I don't know much about them only that they are very friendly and treat me well.

Along with working on the floor, I also am responsible for cleaning up items that need it; polishing silver so that it shines, washing glass till it sparkles, pressing clothing and linens so they look crisp & fresh, and remove stains and grime from other items. A few weeks ago on my first Friday, our weather that day, was not very pleasant (one of many we've had this winter. It had turned very cold & blustery, with more snow in the forecast. When I showed up, Joan said she was thinking of not opening, as many of the volunteers had called to say they couldn't make it in. Then she changed her mind, and decided the two of us could handle it. That day, I learned to operate the cash and I was very excited and please with myself. Believe it or not, we had a few customers, and I rang up sales for one lady totaling more than $70.00!

Joan, said when I start my Saturday shifts in May I will be working cash, I am looking forward to that. Speaking of Joan, I think I already mentioned what a peach this lady is. She always has a kind word for you, never fails to compliment you on you work, and is continually thanking you for being there. She gave me a little inspirational book, called "The Promise of Faith". Here is the very first quote in the book:

The Beginnings of Faith
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.
- Hebrews 11:1-3

Thought you might like to see a couple picture of myself and Marlene in action.

Coffee & Chat

Hi Everyone: Well this morning at 8am I met up with Daphne from Argentina; Ruth from Michigan, USA Linda, from Tallassee, AL, USA. we had a great long chat, but no one else was able to stick around til after 10. When Merrie from Ontario Canada came online; then came old faithful Bigsis Pat from Ontario, Canada who saved the day. I say this because shortly after Pat came on my MSN started acting up and had to shut down for min or so. Merrie and Pat were able to resume talking til I returned. I have found out so much more from Merrie in our chat. She is a great conversationalist. As well as an Writer and has a super humor. We had a really nice long chat. I am so sorry you all could not join us as you really missed out on some laughs. unfortunately, Merrie is unable to just pop on any time since she has to walk to her library to get on line. I found that to be the most intriging thing about her. That she thinks that much of our group to to this just to chat or get on google whatever ... Now I dont know about the rest of you, but I think this act has demonstrated how very powerful our group of people are and how we have made such an impression on one person's life. I have always been so very proud of our group of people. But I am even more so today. I know we all have things to do on the weekends, and cannot always make it to chat, and thats ok. Cause we make up for it in google as well. Emails are great one on one. But nothing sends more of a rush through me than than meeting up with my friends on MSN when we can or posting on google ..... thank you Merrie for trudging theough your snow and up that hill to get to your library to meet with me for coffee this morning. It sure made my day! and thank you Pat, Daphne, Lindalou and Ruth too. I feel so much closer when we sit here and chat live. Like we are actually sitting having coffee together ...... What a wonderful group of folks we have as friends!!!! love you all, Jami from Maryland, USA We would love to have you join us on Saturday, February 16, around 10:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Windows Live (old MSN Messenger). Good Morning Everyone ... passing along a message I received in my email.

I just got off the phone with TD Canada Trust. I noticed there were two charges I hadn't generated on my CC statement when I pulled it off the net yesterday. In speaking with them, there were in excess of 30 attempts to use our credit card, not all of them will show on my official statement that will come in the mail. The only thing that stopped them was the 3 digit number on the back of the card, it didn't match up. A couple got lucky. Our current card of course has been closed and a fraud investigation has been authorized.

My warning to you is, don't assume when you get your statement that it is correct. Go over each and every charge and make sure you generated that charge. The two that got my attention weren't for a lot of money but I knew for a fact that I had not generated them. They all started on January 30 when I was safe and warm in my daughter's home while a storm raged outside. Wayne had not generated them either. Most were for internet purchases. Many of the attempts were for computer software of one kind or another with hefty prices.

The bank will make adjustments to our statement but at the same time advised me NOT to make a payment at this time. We must now be patient until our new card arrives. Let our experience give you a heads up so you don't face the same inconvenience. If by chance some of you discover charges NOT made by you, stop it before it goes any further. Forewarned is forearmed!!!!

Have a great day, Mary from Ontario, Canada

Our Furry / Feathery Friends in the Spotlight

OUR FEATURED PET OF THE WEEK:

This week we have an extra special treat. Merrie is sharing with us all three of her babies. Being this is a week past Valentines Day, I thought it was very appropriate to share these stories of True LOVE between Woman (in this case) and her animals. We have Rescue pets that sometimes are just in their foster homes for a short time, and then we have those who Love so much they end up being more than just a visitor. They become Family. So without further adieu sit back and grab a cup of coffee while you enjoy one more miraculous phenominal persons story of how they obtained thier pets.

I would like to say how much I am enjoying these wonderful heart wrenching stories of True love between a Human and a Dog or Cat, Bird or any other creature who wins the heart of their Human. Thank you all who have contributed. and please anyone else who has a great story about their pet, please share with us. Now ....... please read on!

Songie was born in a hole in the wall back of an electronics store. I'd just moved and needed a power cord to protect my new computer. It was a cool November day when I headed off to the store about a block away. When I arrived the owner was busy so I browsed a bit and finally when he was free I began asking him about power cords and UPS backup systems. To this day I've absolutely no idea how the subject changed to cats but I can tell you that I ended up going home with a little black fur ball (except for a white tipped tail), kitty litter and pan and food. His wife kindly helped me get the supplies home and on our way there she told me the kitty was one of several born feral but wasn't doing well with so many other cats - she seemed like a one person cat.

About two weeks after her arrival I woke up in the middle of the night to the most ungodly howl I've ever heard - not one or two but on and on for hours. Yup you got it - she was in heat and no that yowling wasn't how she got her name. lol! Needless to say, as soon as possible she was spayed and life returned to some semblance of quietude. Songie became very adept at catching soft, little balls with her two front paws or in her teeth and loves to sit up like a squirrel but her very best trick is that every time someone goes to touch her, whether she sees them coming or not she gives a little bbrripp that sounds like a song, hence her name. Songie is now 10 1/2 years old and a real lady about the house.

Raven. Gosh, where to start. Someone suggested I get myself a dog so I'd get out of the apartment more. I gave it some thought, even talked to Songie about it and decided maybe, someday, but definitely not right then. Well, I made a mistake. I read the Pet column the next day and there was one doggy needing a home but heck she was going to be way to big but somehow I found myself talking on the phone to the lady who'd advertised the dog. I'd no way to get to her place but she said if I was serious she'd come pick me up and the rest as they say is history.

Even though Belle totally ignored me when I arrived and I was still leery of her size, what they told me, changed my mind. Belle had been rescued by their daughter but they already had two dogs and a cat and they'd been discussing about putting her down just before I called. Well, there was no way I could let that happen - not after looking into those eyes of hers so home I came with a black, shepherd/lab mix, a large crate, food and toys. Belle became Raven - my beautiful, intelligent, loving companion who's been with me for 10 wonderful years and whom Songie also adores now inspite of her initial hissy fit. lol!

Shadow is my huge multi-coloured tomcat. He was completely unexpected, unplanned for and was absolutely not going to be apart of my life. - yeah right! What can I say, how about it's all Raven's fault.

Raven needed her annual physical so in we went and what was sitting in the waiting room when we got to the Vet's but a cage full of kittens. Well, I know me so I sat in the chair farthest away from them but dear Raven loves cats and she whined and carried on until I went over and sat by them. She did her best to lick them through the bars and silly me tried playing with one that didn't seem to interested in life. I know now what he was saying was, "hey don't you know playing is beneath me." Anyway I was called into the examining room with Raven and when done went home.

Have you ever had a pesky little thought get into your head and it just won't leave until you act on it *sigh* - two hours after I'd gotten home, I returned to the Vet's office to pick up a kitten with extra toes on each paw. It took me three days though to finally tumble to what his name was - I finally realized that every where I went he was sure to follow even to hanging onto my pant leg - hence Shadow that somehow became shortened to Shad, Mr. Shad, Shadipad - well you get the picture - I mean after all, he's my boy and he's now 7 years old.

All three of my companions were rescues but to tell you the truth I'm not really sure who rescued whom. Songie, Raven and Shadipad . . . I love you. Merrie from Ontario Canada

TENDER HEARTS
(A Tribute to Volunteers)
By Dee Clair

I greet each day inside my cage
And wait for God to write my page
I wonder if you'll come today.
And let me feel the light of day

My whole life has been dark with pain
And those who caused it -- what did they gain?
They stole my trust, my livelihood
And all because they simply could

I yearn to run through scented fields
Without a cage and lock to yield
To chase a squirrel that can't be caught
To earn a love that can't be bought

But the darkest days have a light
In the quiet mornings that follow night
You come to visit every day
Without a motive, without a pay

You carried me when I was weak
Brought trust I was too pained to seek
You healed my wounds that took their toll
You rescued my slowly dying soul

And now I listen for your voice
Knowing that you're here by choice
You didn't know me at the start
And yet I'm planted in your heart

I'm learning to accept your praise
And not avert my fearful gaze
Forgive me if I cower still
My life has been against my will

I feel that you are growing tired
Within this fight that you've been mired
If you can keep your doubts at bay
It would mean the world if you could stay

I can't predict how this will end
But I know this of you, my friend
You selflessly all played your part
You saved me with your tender heart

NATURE'S WATER FEATURES PHOTO CONTEST

We are beginning to get a good response to our latest photo contest..... all about water, prooving once again there is still a lot of beauty in a world in chaos. We are not voting just yet, so there is still time to get your pictures in and I look forward to seeing what else you all come up with, though it certainly looks like being a tough contest!! If you have already sent in one that isn't in there - to err is only human - give me a yell, either send it again or tell me approx when you did, and I'll find it. Thank you Daphne from Argentina

This time the Theme is "Nature's Water Features"

That, of course includes water in all the forms nature brings it in.

  • Photos must be identified in where/when they were taken and who took the picture
  • They can be sent to Daphne or to Sharon, or posted on the Circle Group Google board where I will pick them up
  • They can be in any size or format (but not too small) I can adjust the size as needed
  • Contest closes Easter, which this year is 21st-24th March, which also coincides roughly with the Circle's anniversary. Voting will start the following week.
  • This contest is open to all members of any age anywhere on Planet Earth

Jami and I had a great chat this Saturday and Sunday morning, February 16, and February 17, 2008 and one thing we discuss was that I had make ham and potato soup for Friday night supper and we got to talking about it and Jami said as ham sound so good that she had to run out to the store and get one on Saturday which lol she did and she had a ham dinner. One of the things we got to talking about was how dry hams are now days and I told her that we try a different way of cooking our ham I still bake it once in a while but George and I both like it poached.

You take a large cooking pot and put your ham in it now it has to be big enough to cover the ham with water or just about cover with water and then you bring to boil and boil for one hour. Then turn off and let set. It always comes out very moist and juicy and would you believe less salty then if you bake it. You can cook it one day in advance and just leave and then turn it on again and bring to boil again and shut it off and serve. We leave it in the water till we are ready to serve and or before taking care of it to refrigerate.

Another thing Jami asked me for was my ham and potato soup and I thought I would include this in this note also.

RUTH'S HAM AND POTATO SOUP
(be sure to use a large soup pot

  • Four Tablespoons Butter
  • 4 large onions (Chopped Coarsely)
  • 4 cups cooked ham (Cubed)
  • 12 medium baking potatoes (Cubed)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 can (empty evaporated milk can filled) with half and half
  • Several tablespoons cornstarch and water to thicken soup I do it to the desired thicken I would like.
In large soup pot put the butter and melt then add chopped onions and cook till tender then add potatoes, chicken broth, pepper, and salt if you want more, I usually don't add much salt as the ham and chicken broth have a lot in it. Bring to boil and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes until potatoes are just about tender. Add the ham and milks and then bring back to boil and thicken to desired consistency. Make a good amount of soup. Freezes very well. Much Love Ruth from Michigan, USA

Quiet Night
Layered by white the snow lays.
The moon shine bright
The pure white sight.
Silent is the night so pure and clean.
Snow capped trees nestles quietly in the night.
All is serene and quiet lying pure.
As the cold chilly night silently whisper its story of this wintry night.
Such beauty that is take your breathe away.
Leaving you standing in awe of all the wonders of this winter night.
In the beauty of that one snowflake
Falling softly on the land
Is the mystery and miracle of a quiet snow covered night?

Just for Fun

Mexican Smuggler

Juan comes up to the Mexican border on his bicycle. He's got two large bags over his shoulders. The guard stops him and says, "What's in the bags?" "Sand," answered Juan. The guard says, "We'll just see about that get off the bike." The guard takes the bags and rips them apart; he empties them out and finds nothing in them but sand.

He detains Juan overnight and has the sand analyzed, only to discover that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags. The guard releases Juan, puts the sand into new bags, hefts them onto the man''s shoulders, and lets him cross the border. A week later, the same thing happens. The guard asks, "What have you got?" "Sand," says Juan. The guard does his thorough examination and discovers that the bags contain nothing but sand.He gives the sand back to Juan, and Juan crosses the border on his bicycle. This sequence of events if repeated every day for three years. Finally, Juan doesn't show up one day and the guard meets him in a Cantina in Mexico. "Hey, Buddy," says the guard, "I know you are smuggling something. It's driving me crazy. It's all I think about ..... I can't sleep. Just between you and me, what are you smuggling?" Juan sips his beer and says, "Bicycles."

Freerice
As it says on their intuitive and ultra-simple website, Freerice has two missions:
  • 1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
  • 2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
The set-up is a simple vocabulary game. Guess the correct multiple-choice definition of an increasingly tricky word and 20 grains of rice will be donated to a UN food program in honor of your brainy achievement. So let's do the math: You improve your vocab in a fun and highly addictive way and in the process get the satisfaction of knowing that you're not only killing time at work, you're also helping someone not to be killed by famine and starvation. That sounds like a win-win-win spiral of goodness. (And the actual math is pretty impressive too. Since they launched the site in October, Freerice has already managed to facilitate the donation of over 17 billion grains of rice.

Common Expressions - Origin & Meaning

Mend fences
Meaning - Re-establish good relations with people one has disagreed with.

Origin

The proverb 'Good fences make good neighbours' is listed by Oxford Dictionary of Quotations as a mid 17th century proverb. Robert Frost gave the proverb a boost in the American consciousness with his 1914 poem Mending Walls:

He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, 'Good fences make good neighbors.'

That poem, and the 1870s coining of the term 'mending fences' both appear to be influenced the earlier proverb.

In 1879, the American Senator John Sherman returned to his home in Mansfield, Ohio and made a speech, in which he said:

"I have come home to look after my fences."

Sherman probably had in mind returning to look after the fences on his farm. Whether he meant it that way or not, the line was interpreted to mean that he had come with a political motive and intended to acquire support in the coming elections.

Within a few years, 'mending fences' had come to mean 'looking after your interests', particularly one's political interests. For example, this piece from The Mitchell Daily Republican, October 1890, headed 'Coming To Mend Fences':

"An announcement that Consul General John C. New is en route to this country ... has created quite a stir among Republican politicians, and there is a belief that he is coming to assume the personal direction of the campaign."

The phrase mutated to refer to the rebuilding of previously good relationships during the 20th century.

What Does It Mean to Volunteer?

  • Almost everything I do is volunteering really, from upkeeping webpages, doing translations, giving English classes to family members, loading trucks with flood donations, whatever, and I think it is way more satisfying than doing something to expect a pay cheque at the end. Maybe I didn't put that very well, sometimes I do get paid, but then it becomes a HAVE TO thing. Daphne from Argentina

  • Volunteering is a big part of country towns, meals on wheels, at home library, life-line, the six op-shops, Red Cross, CWA, Smith Family, the festival week etc. I have been involved in volunteering all my adult life though mainly in admin roles. Currently I am Treasurer of our Op-Shop, and help out occasionally in the shop, President of our ladies church group which is a sisterhood for the older ladies, and raises money to support a child overseas and small donations to other worthy causes and our church, and in The Messengers which sings at nursing homes, hospitals etc, and runs a country music afternoon and cafe praise once a month. I do their publicity now too. I couldn't imagine life without these outside interests, even when I was working full-time I was involved. It might sound dull, but it is part of my social network, and I meet people with similar interests to myself. I have never been, or wanted to be a social butterfly. Aussie Jan.
  • I wish I had more time to volunteer! My friends and I have done things in the past, like help build a house for Habitat for Humanity, or help package food up for Gleaner's Food Bank. It's just hard lately with work and school. The one thing we still do though is donate to the Salvation Army. My kids are not hurting for toys, so when the house gets too cluttered, then sometimes toys just "disappear" and go off to some more needy kids who will appreciate them! When the kids are older I think I'll probably get back into it, but right now our schedule is so tight we barely have time to clean the house and give baths to the kids. :) Dave from Michigan, USA
  • Volunteering means being disciplined; it is the habit of sacrificing small things now so that you can have bigger things in futuer OR to do small things you don't like, so that you can spend the rest of your life doing and enjoying big things you do like. Volunteering is part of life because you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people to get what they want. I personally love volunteering for sure and most of my time is spend in voluntary work especially with children who lives in the remote areas in the deep in the villages because that is where they need much attention really. Edith from Uganda

Health Matters

I don't know unfortunately a Diabetics recipe to inform, but I can guarantee that the sugar and the salt are poison in our life. Who have diabetic problems must avoid sugar surely and those people that have high pressure must avoid salt. Anything beyond it must be accompanied so close and take care. Hugs Valter from Brazil

Norma from Alberta, Canada - Last Monday Norma and Wayne went to Edmonton shopping and on the way home she had a major asthma attack which sent her heart out of rhythm. She couldn't breathe and her heart wouldn't stop racing. Wayne took her directly to the doctor and she ended in the Westlock hospital where they shocked my heart back into rhythm and then worked on the asthma problem. This attack was triggered by the recent cold snap in northern Alberta with temperatures as low as -45 degrees (-55 with the wind chill). She was discharged on Monday, Feb. 18. The stay was not without further incident as well. On Sunday while she was out on a lunch pass the ward was quarantined because of the "gastro flu" that has been ruthlessly attacking people in North America. After many x-rays they found that she had old pnuemonia that had not cleared up. So, she is on mega drugs, but today she actually feels human. Despite this scary ordeal, Norma still has her marvelous sense of humour because she said she was on a cheap holiday; one where you can't pick your food and you are woken up at 6 am.

Maxine, from Ontario, Canada - Maxine is doing much better. Please keep her in prayer until she is well.

Following is a message from her daughter about her son-in-law:

Hi everyone, went to see Paul yesterday, first time since last Tuesday when we went to see him after him getting his trach, we were both just exhausted and took some time off from the driving. They told me that on Sunday he got a stomach drain put in for fluid, yesterday they said so far it had drained 2 1/2 litres and is still draining, they have cultured it and it is not infection, neither is the mucous in his lungs, yet he has a constant temp, yesterday he was 37.9 and that's good for him. His wbc count is 14, hemoglobin 80 ( had a transfusion yesterday), his platelets 70 (had one transfusion this week), so for him that is all good. He is not doing well at weening off the respirator his vital signs go up very quickly, so they haven't even tried the last couple days. Also because of his bp being high he is back on morphine, versed and propofol, and a bp med., he didn't have high bp that we know of but hadn't been checked for a couple years. He is very full of fluid, extremely puffy, the nurse says all the antibiotics, etc., they are giving him lasix but once again is kidney enzymes are climbing and he even on lasix is only outputting the minimum, the renal specialist will visit him today. So this road is a long and bumpy one and your continued prayers and support are much needed. God Bless Mary jo, Jesse,& Erica

Pami from New York, USA - Please keep Pami in prayer as she has a long way to go with treatment for her metastases breast cancer. She is in stage four.

Cindy from Phillipston, MA's husband, Vern, was just diagnosed with diabetes.

Bea from the Catskills - an update on my hip. It has not been a few good days here; so much pain where the staples where removed and drained. I hate living on heavy pain meds; so am trying to be mucho; as JB says, and am so tired lately. I am now walking with a cane, and I have placed the walker in a closet,(sure hope it stays there and collects dust); lol Thanks everyone for your prayer.

Ellen from Georgia, USA - I may not be here very often for a while. I went to the pain doctor yesterday and he said there is nothing he can do for me. I called my regular doctor and he is changing one of my meds. Problem is I can't get it until Saturday. So for now i am just hurting and trying to get a little done. Hopefully by Monday it will kick in and I will be feeling better. Bye for now.

Billie, from Ridgely, TN USA. - Just wanted you to know that I'm back at Tonya's. She's back in the hospital. We're going to see her tonight. I came yesterday to go with Michelle to talk to them at the school. We went and they are going to let Michelle come in the class tomorrow and act like she is a student teacher and just observing the class. She wants to see what the 2 people in the class are doing to Courtney. They say that they will do something about it, but I really don't know. Courtney gets so upset when she has to think about going back to that school. I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

By the way, Michelle is 26 and living with Tonya now. Don't know what I would have done if she hadn't been here for Courtney when Tonya had to go back in the hospital. I really don't know what happened to Tonya except she did some drugs to see if it would make her feel better. She was thinking about killing herself. It's a big mess here, but don't know what to do except pray. I've done a lot of that.

I'm going home tomorrow. Stephen is going with me to help me get the storage shed cleaned and some more things put in it. LOL Better go. Just knew I needed to check in with you all.

London Chrissie - My operation has healed up nicely just a red mark with a few red spots here and there where the staples were.

Wanda from Thomasville, AL, USA - I'm just checking in and saying hello. I havent been feeling well for over a week now, my feet and legs are swelling really bad and hurting and I can almost feel it happening when I am sitting in this chair. I went to the doctor today but couldnt see him, the office was packed and I didnt feel like waiting for hours. I am way behind on email again .. with groups and individuals too, hope to catch up soon. Y'all take care. Hugs, Wanda
