Norad Tracks Santa 2005

  • How are you?
  • Everything all right?
  • Like to hear from you.
  • Love to see you soon.
  • Obviously I miss you.
Thought a wonderful way to start of this week's newsletter would be with this lovely poem that Lena from Ontario sent in.

Just like a rose,
so precious and rare,
is the forever friendship
the circle of us share.

Planted with kindness,
it's warmed by the sun
of caring and sharing,
laughter and fun.

It's grounded in trust
and nurtured by love,
with a sprinkling of grace
from God up above.

Tears of sadness and joy,
like dew, renew this friendship
I share with you.
And in the heart's garden,
we find the room to be ourselves,
to grow and bloom.

A blessing of beauty unsurpassed,
our friendship's a flower
that will always last.

We are back fome from our trip south, which went off very well, except for the vast open spaces with nothing to break up the monotony of the flat landscape, which wasn't even farmed for the most part. On leaving Buenos Aires Province and entering the big apple producing province of Rio Negro, we had to go through a discinfecting control point, and we weren't allowed to take any fruit or veg over with us. Since our journey was a long one, we had decided to take some of our food with us. We thought it very funny to have to eat all our apples at that control point, or have them confiscated!! We were told that coming back into BA we could bring all we wanted, though! (And we did, we brought cherries straight from a cherry orchard) We visited Trelew, a very Welsh community, Trelew and went on to Gaiman, famous for its Welsh colony tea-shops and had tea at the same place Princess Diana had visited back in ´95. They served us bread and butter, sandwiches, cakes, and a wide variety of sweet tarts, most of which was packed up for us to take away with us.

We visited a museum that showed the history of the earth, right through its geological formation, through the dinosaur ages right up to present day. We also visited a geopark, that showed the rock formations at different ages, fossils etc, but it was very windy that day, and the park keeper didnt recommend making the rounds, due to the dust. Then we went to the Valdez Peninsula, famous for its sea life reserves. It had rained the night before, and was still raining off and on, so because there were large stretches of dirt roads, 250 km or so, to the main reserves, that trip wasn't recommended either. So although we had gone as far as we could on the built up roads into the peninsula, to Puerto Piramides we didnt in fact see a single penguin, sealion or walrus, nor any other kind of wildlife at all, except for thousands of birds on their own island, from a viewpoint on the land. Consequently we didnt take too many photos this time, as there was nothing to photograph, hahahaha. We visited a beach village, that had dozens of shallow, wave carved caves in the cliffs, Las Grutas and my sis collected up several fancy shells. There were also swimming pools, carved out of the ground rocks and were exposed at low tide, which we thought was pretty neat. Coming back into the huge extenses of Buenos Aires Province we noticed the wheat fields at different stages of harvesting, in places dozens of farm machinery implements lined up waiting to do business. In some places the harvesting was already done, and cattle were allowed into the fields to trample in the stubble. We covered over 3,000 kilometers on that trip, and wondered why it was that with so much cattle, beef prices are so high!!

I hope we get to talk to you soon love from Daphne and Sylvie

Grandma's Birth Control Pills

Smart Grandma!

The doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized she had a prescription for birth control pills.

"Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills?
"Yes, they help me sleep at night."
"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possibly help you sleep!"

She reached out and patted the young Doctor's knee. "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks ... And believe me, it helps me sleep at night."

You gotta love Grandma!

Quick Clean Up Tips

  • When you're cleaning the house, carry your cleaning supplies with you in a pail or apron.
  • Keep a basket in each room for clutter. Have the family help clean out the baskets once a week. When unexpected company arrives, simply put the baskets in the closet.
  • For a speedy cleanup of toilet bowls, put a small amount of your favourite scented cleaner (eg. Mr. Clean) in your toilet bowls each night before bed. In the morning, every bathroom will smell great.
  • Use Swiffer, or similar type cloths to quickly clean the dashboard of your car.
  • Spend less time on dishes by filling the sink with hot water and dishwashing soap before you prepare a meal. Add the dirty dishes as you use them. By the time you are finished, the dishes can be cleaned up easily.
  • Keep baby wipes handy for quick cleanups in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Steam clean your microwave. Add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave - safe, four - cup bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Wipe clean.
  • Before cleaning the shower, turn on the hot water for a few minutes to loosen the dirt and grime.
  • If you live in a two-story house, don't get rid of your old vacuum. Keep it upstairs so you don't have to lug the vacuum up and down stairs. It'll save time and energy. You can also keep a bucket of cleaning products on each floor of your home.
  • It may sound like a luxury, but hiring someone—even a neighborhood high school student — to occasionally do a thorough cleaning or just those most dreaded jobs can be worth the money.

Danielle from Bismarck, MO, USA I was watching Oprah the other day and heard this poem read by world-renowned poet, author, actress and activist Dr. Maya Angeloue so she copied it so everyone could read it. Danielle said it made her think and wonder.

Amazing Peace: A Christmas Poem
By Dr. Maya Angelou

Thunder rumbles in the mountain passes
And lightning rattles the eaves of our houses.
Flood waters await us in our avenues.

Snow falls upon snow, falls upon snow to avalanche
Over unprotected villages.
The sky slips low and grey and threatening.

We question ourselves.
What have we done to so affront nature?
We worry God.
Are you there? Are you there really?
Does the covenant you made with us still hold?

Into this climate of fear and apprehension, Christmas enters,
Streaming lights of joy, ringing bells of hope
And singing carols of forgiveness high up in the bright air.
The world is encouraged to come away from rancor,
Come the way of friendship.

It is the Glad Season.
Thunder ebbs to silence and lightning sleeps quietly in the corner.
Flood waters recede into memory.
Snow becomes a yielding cushion to aid us
As we make our way to higher ground.

Hope is born again in the faces of children
It rides on the shoulders of our aged as they walk into their sunsets.
Hope spreads around the earth. Brightening all things,
Even hate which crouches breeding in dark corridors.

In our joy, we think we hear a whisper.
At first it is too soft. Then only half heard.
We listen carefully as it gathers strength.
We hear a sweetness.
The word is Peace.
It is loud now. It is louder.
Louder than the explosion of bombs.

We tremble at the sound. We are thrilled by its presence.
It is what we have hungered for.
Not just the absence of war. But, true Peace.
A harmony of spirit, a comfort of courtesies.
Security for our beloveds and their beloveds.

We clap hands and welcome the Peace of Christmas.
We beckon this good season to wait a while with us.
We, Baptist and Buddhist, Methodist and Muslim, say come.
Peace.
Come and fill us and our world with your majesty.
We, the Jew and the Jainist, the Catholic and the Confucian,
Implore you, to stay a while with us.
So we may learn by your shimmering light
How to look beyond complexion and see community.

It is Christmas time, a halting of hate time.

On this platform of peace, we can create a language
To translate ourselves to ourselves and to each other.

At this Holy Instant, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ
Into the great religions of the world.
We jubilate the precious advent of trust.
We shout with glorious tongues at the coming of hope.
All the earth's tribes loosen their voices
To celebrate the promise of Peace.

We, Angels and Mortal's, Believers and Non-Believers,
Look heavenward and speak the word aloud.
Peace. We look at our world and speak the word aloud.
Peace. We look at each other, then into ourselves
And we say without shyness or apology or hesitation.

Peace, My Brother.
Peace, My Sister.
Peace, My Soul.

    CHRISTMAS IN BRAZIL

Some Brazilians celebrate Christmas on the beach. They do picnics and eat cold meats, salads and small cakes. At night, at home, the family gets together around the conveniently decorated Christmas tree. Carols, stables, nine-day count All to commemorate the birth of Baby Jesus. That is what Christmas is all about in Brazil. The Christmas festivities for Brazil have a little of everything; lights, decorations, stable scenes, decorated pine tree, midnight Mass, supper, and of course that kind figure who distributes gifts on Christmas night, Santa Claus HoHoHo. En many regions of the country, mainly in North east or central west, the nine-day count for Christmas takes place ( nota: the nine-day count is a common thing in Catholic Religion before important dates.... here in Argentina too) Many neighbouring families get together to pray, at a set time every day for nine days before Christmas. Epiphany and crafted stable scenes are also tradiciones in inland cities. It is also a custom for peoplee to go at midnight to midnight mass. " Pray first, have fun after" This tradition comes from year 143 when Pope Saint Telesforo started midnight Mass. These days in almost all the churches. Midnight Mass is a little earlier, around 8 p.m. ( In Argentina too) That way people get home earlier for their supper.

    CHOIRS THAT DELIGHT

In the south, December is the month of lots of music and splendor. The Christmas climate contages the whole region, mainly in Gramado and Curitiba where they have the traditional choir presentacions. In Gramado during the Christmas festivities, more than half a million tourists turn up at the different shows which include the "Singing Tree Choir" and a show of lights, fireworks, tenores and dancing waters that tell of the origen of Christmas.

    GIANT STABLE SCENES

Giant stable have become the biggest happening in downtown San Pablo. People put them up in their homes and even get to remove furniture from some rooms so that they fit in better. The Crist child in the manger beside Mary and Joseph and some animals are a must. It all depends on the creativity and imagination of each one.

    SECRET FRIEND

This tradition is good fun. Many families play as the Secret Friend which is only revealed in the Christmas supper with the exchange of gifts. And as in all festivities, there has to be things to eat and drink, Christmas supper in Brazil has many tastes. Grilled turkey, ham, chicken, nibbles, rice with raisins, nuts, seasonal fruits, cold meats, puddings, sweetbreads and other delicacies. After supper, well off to bed to dream of all the good things that baby Jesus means to the Christians.

    The Poem:

    Its Christmas
    A truly happy Christmas
    Day of our companion
With beards as white as snow
That falls outside in the backyard.

    Its Christmas
    Happy Christmas, freedom
    Day of love, of friendship,
    Of lovely things
    Such as candles
    Safe in their candlesticks

    Its Christmas
    An honourable happy Christmas
    Day of loving beings
    Of a strong heart
    As a breeze
That beats in the breast of a sparrow.

    Its Christmas
    A Sincere happy Christmas
Day of the one everyone venerates
    Of a marvellous significance
    Like a white bird
    That flies towards heaven
    Of anatural beauty

    Its Christmas
    A holy Happy Christmas
    Day on which
    Jesus Christ was born crowned
    With his supernatural light

    Its Christmas
    Have a happy Christmas

True story of a kind Pilot

A man was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane stopped in Sacramento along the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft, the plane would re-board in 50 minutes. Everybody got off the p lane except one gentleman who was blind. The man had noticed him as he walked by and could tell the gentleman was blind because his Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight. He could also tell he had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached him, and calling him by name, said, "Keith, we're in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?"

The blind man replied, "No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs."

Picture this:

All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

True story .... Have a great day and remember ...

THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS AS THEY APPEAR!

We have updates on Cindy's Mother:

Friends & Family, I just wanted to update everyone on Mother's condition. She had a heart cather last week. They did 4 stents in her heart and one in her kidney.

I brought her home yesterday. She's doing real good. Courtney had her a bed made on the couch. She just got up and doing her walk to the back door and back to bed. They told her to walk each day. She got her shower this morning and the place looks real good. He changed her blood pressure medicine and put her on plavix. Thank goodness I had some already. It was after dark before we got home yesterday. Then I had to cook some supper for them.

Courtney's been a big help. We made fudge this morning and may make divinity this afternoon. Tonya's bringing Stephen for me to see him. Today is his 17th birthday. I think they're going shopping for a while and leave David here with us.

Courtney & I took a drive around the bottom while ago. She's doing real good. Of course she always has to move the seat back since she's so tall.

Just wanted to update everyone one life at the Simmons'. I'll talk to you all later. Hugs, Cindy

Thank you Cindy for the update. May God Bless her with healing grace and return her to good health. Let's keep Cindy's Mother in our prayers.

Thank you for all your prayers for Haleys Grandpa Joe. His surgery went well and they got it all. Just for precaution he will be going through 6 weeks of chemo and then radiation. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

I would like to close off this newsletter with these wishes sent to us from from Lena from Ontario, Canada.

Today ... I wish you a day of ordinary miracles - ... fresh pot of coffee you didn't have to make yourself.

An unexpected phone call from an old friend.

Green stoplights on your way to work or shop.

I wish you a day of little things to rejoice in

  • The fastest line at the grocery store.
  • A good sing along song on the radio.
  • Your keys right where you look.

I wish you a day of happiness and little bite-size pieces of perfection that give you the funny feeling that the Lord is smiling on you, holding you so gently because you are someone special and rare.

I wish You a day of Peace, Happiness and Joy.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Send this phrase to the people you'll never forget and remember to send it also to the person who sent it to you. It's a short message to let them know that you'll never forget them. Take the time!

LIVE YOUR LIFE IN SUCH A WAY THAT SHOULD ANYONE SHOULD SPEAK BADLY OF YOU NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE IT
