Hi everyone! This weekend issue begins with a follow-up on the World Wide Web Cirlce of Friends Teddies for Charity Chapter which Claudia, aka Recipe Lady mentioned last week.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

JORDAN

Jordan is Charla's sister-in-law's nephew who had a diving accident in the summer of 2004 which has left him paralyzed. He is now at Craig Hospital and a Care Page has been set up for him. He loves to have the messages read to him so please take a moment to visit Jordan's Care Page often and leave a note in his message board. The first time you visit you will have to register in order to leave a message but registration only takes a few minutes.

The Carepage Name is JordanFromIndy.

Always take the time to hug your children and grandchildren (hug everyone who is important in your lives) -- if they are not with you, get in touch with them to say I LOVE YOU!

If you would like to make a Teddy Bear for Jordan that would be so wonderful and you can mail them directly to Jordan at the following address:

Jordan McNicholl
C/O Craig Hospital
3425 South Clarkson Street
Englewood, CO 80113
Please mark on a note or card where you are from.

The teddies can be sewn, crochet, knit, painted, bought -- whatever your preference is. What we are trying to do with this is bring a smile to this young lad's face and let him know that there are caring people all over the world who are thinking of him.

If you do not have a teddy bear pattern and instructions let me know please I am sure we can come up with one for you. If any members have a pattern they would like us to use please also let me know so that I can share it with the membership.

I have received a few comments from the members about our Teddies for Tragedies Chapter that I would love to share with you:

  • What a great idea! I would love to get involved, but with the move and all, everything is packed. AND, I do have a pattern (actually a couple of them) I would love to share, but again, they are packed.

If you still are looking for them after my move, that will be one of the first things I look for. And as soon I can I will either make, (or buy) one for Jordan. Pat, aka Bigsis

  • Sharon, how must this Teddy be made? Crochet, knit or sewn or either. Please let me know. Fran

  • What a wonderful idea Sharon. I would love to be in on this one. If no pattern I will send one of my teddies I have. A beanie bear would be great also. I don't know if you notice all the bears I had in the trailer when you stay here but what a great idea to send them to the ill. I know when I was so ill the angels that were send to me were great to help make me feel so much better. Please let me know when you have found out Jordan address and I would love to send him one.

Thank so much sis for letting me know about this. Ruth

  • Sounds like a wonderful idea. But I'm not a sewer but I could buy one. Vicki

  • Please enjoy this very time sensitive article sent in by Cindy -- the big day is tomorrow, Friday, August 27th, 2004.

    ONLY…Once in our Life Time

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history.

So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with your children and grandchildren.

NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

Members Questions & Answers

Q: I just read this and I strongly believe this could happen. I cut and pasted the message. I may call my dealer and see if it's that easy. Pami

Subject: Vehicle Identification Number

Your "VIN" (vehicle identification number) should be covered.......

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called the Chrysler Dodge house and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the vin and they would cut me one on the spot and could order the keyless device if I wanted.

Seems that car thieves have found yet another way to steal your car or truck without any effort at all. The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN.

The car dealer's parts department will make a duplicate key from the VIN and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it? It IS that easy. To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN label located on the dash board. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you can cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

A:This is true. Please check out this article and thank you Pami for alerting us to this.

The Tips Jar

Hi Everyone. I don't think I received any tips this week ... if I missed one that you sent please email me with a gentle "nudge" to get it published.

    Recipes

Is there such a thing as to much chocolate???, Hugs Liz

    Rice Salad

Toss salad with 1/2 cup chopped green onions, 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, 3/4 to 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, 1 small can sliced black olives, drained, and 1 whole yellow bell pepper, chopped fine or sliced thin, your choice. Two tablespoons capers, drained. One quarter to 1/2 cup basil leaves (loosely packed fresh basil, leaves torn, for color and flavor). If you don't have fresh basil, do not substitute dried, just add more parsley. Bit of salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. Oil and lemon juice mixed for dressing just before serving. A delight to the eye.

The above recipe starts with a base of 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. For crowds, alter accordingly.

Tips: Make your rice salad the night before, so the flavors will meld. Before you cover and refrigerate overnight, be sure to add a touch of your dressing to moisten the salad. Right before you serve, add the rest of your vinaigrette (if you do it earlier, the salad could get soggy).

Be sure to check out all the wonderful recipes in the WWWCOF Cookbook and add your own favourites or email The Recipe Lady aka Claudia who will be happy to add them to our ever growing collection.

    Hot/Cold Packs

For anyone who is looking for the microwaveable items for sore muscles. Take any cotton or flannel fabric and cut 2 pieces the same size and stitch together to form a square (or whatever shape you would like to make) (or to make it even simpler you could use a tube sock). Leave one corner open to fill the bag with white uncooked rice (not minute rice). Stitch up hole.

To use put these in microwave for 2 min. on high and you have a heat pad.

You can also keep a few in the freezer for cold packs.

After you have used as hot packs a few dozen times, put bag with a cup of water (DO NOT put the bag in the water) turn on microwave for 2 min. and just leave inside microwave for about 5 minutes. The steam from the water puts moisture back into the rice.

These last forever!!! Just do not wash bag. You might want to make a slip on cover for them to keep them clean and throw the cover in to wash.

Be sure to check out all the wonderful craft ideas in the WWWCOF Craft Site and add your own favourites or email Crafty Jayne who will be happy to add them to our ever growing collection.

Remember to take a moment to enjoy looking at some pictures Pat, aka Bigsis, has published online for us. She has done a great job with the reunion photos and I know Claudia was busy doing uploading her photos so check the albums for new pictures!

    Reader Feedback

    • August 20/04 - I took the kids out for their morning constitutional, and it was raining --- one of those slow, drizzling types. We needed it, so I said a thank-you prayer.

The newsletter was terrific. I'm hoping you get some responses on the Teddy Bear thing as I'm almost ready to start making my first bear for the project.

  • Ruby's page is such a hoot!!!!! I love it... I can't wait until she comes to visit Herc, Isaiah and Abigail, and hope she finds a little time to visit with me during her stay.

    Love ya!!!!! Claudia

    Mother-In-Law

I don't send to many jokes but this is a must read!! Pami

A man goes to see Mel Gibson's new movie, The Passion, and is inspired to take his family to Israel to see the places where Jesus lived and died.

While on vacation, his mother-in-law dies. An undertaker in Tel Aviv explains that they can ship the body home to Wisconsin at a cost of $20,000 or the mother-in-law could be buried in Israel for $500 US.

The man says, "We'll ship her home." The undertaker asks, "Are you sure? That's an awfully big expense and we can do a very nice burial here."

The man says, "Look, 2000 years ago they buried a guy here and three days later he rose from the dead.

I just can't take that chance."

Should you be in need of a laugh, read this lot.

    Have a smile on me.....
