  • Just want to let you know our granddaughter Haley will be going this Friday for her heart check up. She has had a little blue around her mouth and the Dr. said last year they may have to do the artery stretching this year. She was born with pulmonary stenosis. Please keep Haley in your prayers that she will be ok. I know deep down she will be but you all know me. God is the Great Physician! It isn't a big thing anymore but anytime you have to be under antisthetic (sp) it is serious. Once this is done, if need be, she will be fine the rest of her life and can even do sports. She's already full of energy beyond. So let's just ask God for His Healing. May God Bless All, John, & Charla, Jonna, Bobby & Libby, Nanna Sue & Papa Jim

  • Every year without fail towards the end of August we get some kind of storm which goes by the name of "Santa Rosa" because it always shows up on or around the 30th August which is Santa Rosa day. Sometimes it comes as a brief but destructive hailstorm. Others as torrential rain for a couple of hours, and more commonly several days of general bad weather. But Santa Rosa always says "present". This year she seems to have come a couple of days early. We have had generally bad weather since last weekend, plenty of rain, high winds, even thunder and lightning which is usually only associated with summer. In Buenos Aires city (250 miles- 400 km away) they had 128mm per square meter of rain fall in a short time, causing over 2400 to be evacuated, 2 deaths and dozens of trees uprooted as well as some structural damage. Mar del Plata had heavy rains which just caused the usually inconvenience of roads flooded from curb to curb and a few fallen branches. So once again Santa Rosa has said " here I am again"...... unless we are to get another next week!! Daphne from Argentina
P.S. all my daffodils plants are flattened and crushed...... Agos had planted 2 dozen bulbs back in the fall. But the unreachable oranges remaining at the top off the tree still refused to fall off!!

  • I just wanted to share something with you that happened this week. A very dear friend of mine lost her husband suddenly this week. They were out in their boat and had been on holidays for 3 weeks enjoying our beautiful coast. On Tuesday morning my friend, Kay, woke up and looked at her husband. His eyes were open and she said good morning to him, but he didn't respond. He had passed away in his sleep.... He had just endured several months of chemotherapy for cancer and had his last treatment before they went on holidays. He was 58. It was wonderful that he spent his final days doing the thing he loved the most, but it was too soon. My friend Kay is part of my softball team and when something happens to one of us, good or bad, we get together and help. Today we spent the day fixing up the hall for the funeral reception, preparing and serving food to the hundreds of people who came to pay their respects to Dennis. Most people were amazed that we came together so soon and had things organized. But of course because we spend a lot of time together, we all knew what do do. Not only do we play ball together, but we spend time all year around together and have done so for many years. Even though I am tired from serving food and coffee all day, I know we feel better knowing we were able to make Kay's day a little easier.
Last winter my husband's son passed away and a large fruit basket appeared on our door step days later ... I knew immediately who it was from .. That's what friendship is all about. Cassidy Pat from Vancouver Island Canada

Tips & Techniques

  • Make an instant hand/foot/leg scrub by mixing some granular sugar with your regular body lotion.
  • Shoe shopping is best done at the end of the day when your feet are swollen. Otherwise, you may buy shoes that are too small!
  • Instead of buying an expensive facial spritzer, did you know you can make one at home with a mini-spray gun purchased at the dollar store?
  • To keep your perfume lasting longer, always store it in a cool, dark place. Tip: Stowing a perfume bottle in your lingerie drawer will lightly scent your undergarments.
  • Lip gloss does double duty! When moisturizing lips, apply any leftover balm on your fingertips to your cuticles.
  • Instead of a girls’ night out, why not try a girls’ night in? Have everyone bring their unwanted clothes, then have fun swapping each other’s giveaways. Score some new digs while passing on items you don’t want anymore.
  • Although shampoo bottles often suggest lathering up twice, once is usually enough.
  • Don’t wash your hair every day. Natural oils help condition hair.
  • An inexpensive piece of ribbon or a long thin scarf is an inexpensive way to update an outfit.
  • Make your own charm necklace by stringing beads onto a sheer ribbon. Tie knots between each bead for a special effect.
  • Whiten you fingernails by giving them a soak in lemon juice.
  • Clean your hair and makeup brushes with baby shampoo.
  • Get in the habit of scrubbing your feet with a pumice stone every time you shower (a minute or two will do) and save on pricey salon pedicures.
  • Don’t throw out that old pair of panty hose. Dip them in a little bit of baby oil and use it to shine up your old leather shoes.
  • Clean an old mascara wand for a cheap alternative to a lash brush. Use after applying mascara to get rid of clumps.
  • When applying face cream at night, dabbing a little bit extra around the eyes eliminates the need for a separate eye cream.
  • A high, slicked back ponytail at the back of your head is like an instant facelift!
  • With a $10 aloe vera plant you can naturally sooth a sunburn, help heal a cut, and moisturize your skin.
  • Get to know the sales people at your favourite stores. They can let you know when their sales are and how to get on the mailing list for deals and promotions.
  • Warehouse sales aren’t often publicized, so ask a friend in the fashion business to keep you in the loop for upcoming sales.
  • Warehouse and sample sale shopping can get crazy so go early, and be sure to check discard racks.
  • Invest in classic, well-tailored pieces such as a great jacket and black pants, but save, while still looking fashionable, by buying inexpensive, of-the-moment accessories such as a necklace or colourful shoes.
  • A good tailor can help make inexpensive or ill-fitting garments fit your body properly, which will instantly upgrade your look.
  • Bring an old item to a tailor or dressmaker to give it new life – shorten the leg on pants, change a hem on a skirt, switch buttons or re-line a jacket in a bright print.
  • A great shoe or bag can instantly update an old outfit.
  • Save on dry-cleaning bills by spraying garments with a deodorizing spray and airing out between wears. Dry-clean only every couple months or when soiled.
  • Hang clothes out to dry, you’ll save money and electricity, and your clothes will smell wonderful.
  • Always keep your eyes out for great fashion finds. Yard sales, flea markets and second-hand stores have great scores, you just have to be patient and weed through the junk.

Last Friday, Ruby, Kendra and I hopped into our little Toyota and motored off to the ferry and the start of our weekend adventure. Patti in Bellingham you see had her name drawn to be the next to have a visit from Ruby and we thought it would be nice to hand deliver her. What a great experience for all!

We had a one sailing wait at the ferry terminal but that was enjoyably spent visiting with a couple in the line up from Salt Lake City. The two hour ocean voyage, across the Strait of Georgia, was a delight -- perfect weather - smooth sailing into Tsawwassen. We only got lost once and ended up at the Point Roberts border crossing which definately would not of been a bad location to be lost at but no time for side trips so we did a quick about face and got back on track in the right direction. In no time at all we were at the right spot and enjoying The Peace Arch State Park during a short wait time at the Peace Arch/Blaine border crossing enroute to Bellingham.

We contacted Patti as soon as we arrived and made arrangements to meet her for a most delicious supper at Applebees. Ruby got to meet Patti and great fun was had by all as we read through her journal and explored her back pack. The evening ended with plans to meet up on mid-day Saturday at Bellis Fair mall. Kendra and I headed off early and had such fun especially at a Target store. Watch out Wallys World -- I think my favourite store could easily become Target! Ruby would of loved to have been here with us but she was having fun this morning with Patti doing some freeze drying.

We met Patti and her friend Irma at the mall mid day. We had lunch and spent a few enjoyable hours together investigating some more shops, including, of course, Walmart! We made plans to attend the Lynden County Fair. Irma could not join us but I am hopeful we will get another opportunity to spend time with this wonderful lady. We continued on our adventure which led past one of Patti's favourite shops, Linda's Fabric Store -- a quilters meca -- such lovely fabrics! Of course I had to purchase some yardage of various paw print designs. We went to Ferndale and visited with another friend of Patti's, Mary Etta who did come to the fair ... yippee!!!! The evening concluded with a nice meal at Bob's Burgers and Brews.

Sunday we went to church with Patti and met up with a few more of her friends. Farewells were sad but Ruby is definately in excellent hands and will enjoy a wonderful visit with her new friend Patti in Washington.

Kendra and I pointed our vehicle north to the border and home with pleasant memories of new friends, new places and a burning desire to DO IT AGAIN.

I have always believed in seeking surroundings and circumstances that encourage and uplift and to find people who share my goals, interests, and positive values such as trust, patience, learning, serving and faithfulness ..... this was accomplished during the August 2005 Bellingham Adventure and I thank Patti, Irma and Mary Etta for their kindness and friendship which I will always cherish. Picture to follow hopefully in next week's edition.

Do you want to be next to receive a visit from Ruby? Email her manager Daphne today and get your name added to the list. Meanwhile, have fun playing her "Chocolate Milkshake Breaktime Games" and follow up her travels so far. Look forward to hearing from you all.

ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES: Up to 40 vegetable compete as a substitute for petrols
Yakarta. Indonesia

The energy crisis in Indonesia has heated up the idea of cars movilized by palm oil, fat and up to 40 vegetables that scientists are investigating as substitutes fuels for petrol. Power cuts are surprising in a member country of Petrol Exporting Organization, where a liter of petrol costs 25 cents of a dollar, thanks to state subventions.

Nevertheless, petrol reserves of the country could end in 10 years at the actual rate of development if more reserves are not found, and in later years Indonesia has become more an importer of this fossil fuel than an exporter.

The unstoppable price rise of “black gold” has renewed the interest in biofuels which are already used in 5% of vehicles in Germany.. produced from vegetable oils, biodiesel is presented as a double advantage of being renewable and being ecological. Vehicles that use biodiesel let out much lower quantities of carbon dioxide and would improve air quality. Also biodiesel does not requiere modifications in actual vehicle motors and can be distributed in the same way as fossil fuels.

Humour

We all need a little stress-reliever!!!!!! Sometimes when you have a stressful day or week, you need some silliness to break up the day. And, if we are honest, we have a lot more stressful days than not. Here is your dose of humor...Follow the instructions to find your new name.

Use the third letter of your first name to determine your new first name:

R emember that children laugh an average of 146 times a day; adults laugh an average of 4 times a day. Put more laughter in your day. We don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.
